placket is where the buttons/ buttonholes are, yoke is across the back of the shoulders, if it is a separate piece

I'm glad this has been asked. I've been ironing shirts since I was 8yo (father and 4 brothers plus blouses for me and mother) and have always wanted to improve my technique. I thought that if I asked this question, it would be met with scorn and derision so thanks 74jaimeSmile.

chuck them in the tumble dryer for 10 minutesGrin

Thanks Tizzy - will now go and practise the shirt ironing. Ironing is certainly not one of my strong points

JanH · 13/06/2006 16:54

Just realised I had me yokes and me plackets confused. Thank you, tissy Smile

You can get teh small board (often called a sleeve board) from most places that stock ironing boards: John Lewis and Homebase both have it, I know.

If the shirts are 100% cotton, then use plenty of steam to help the smoothing.

My dh once asked me to iron a shirt for him and when I had finished, he couldn't tell the difference between the one that I had ironed and the one that I hadn't.

That was 18yrs ago and also the last time that he asked me to iron a shirt for him Grin

Also have water in a spray gun (with added essential oil) to attack creased bits.
I like doing my dh's shirts.
It is an act of love. Smile

moondog · 14/06/2006 09:46

Yes,or ylang ylang if feeling racy!! Grin

Tortington · 14/06/2006 10:49

if he is doing it let him do it

when doing sleeves smooth out first with your hand. spray with water - stick full steam on and iron.

the rest is just ironing - no matter which way round you do it.

LizP · 14/06/2006 19:20

Brooks Brothers non-iron shirts Grin

if you collect Tesco's club cards you can swap them for Johnsons cleaning vouchers. I swaped £45 worth of vouchers and got £195 for cleaning. That will be DH's shirts done for ages!!

saltire · 16/06/2006 11:13

My DH is in the RAF, so i let him iron his own shirts, which i hide at the bottom of the basket, in the hope that he will iron everything else as well!
