Stomach bloated three years

Uglyduckling1585 · 30/03/2026 02:35

I've had a bloated looking stomach for about three years now, it makes me look about six months pregnant, I've been very slim my whole life and this looks awful. I've been house and bed bound for almost four years and can't eat much so I don't know why I have this awful gut. I'm 58. Before this I was just under ten stone now I'm over eleven, it seems the weight has gone straight to my stomach. Would post a picture but can't get the hang of doing a selfie pic.

Are you registered with a gp?

No I'm house bound.

I posted on the other thread you started, but came here to say that you need to be seen by a doctor. If you are bed/housebound you need to call your GP surgery and get someone out to see you.

Nosejobnelly · 30/03/2026 13:39

You need to see. GP asap, if you’re housebound they can come out.

They don't come out, I've asked before.

OP, it’s clear you need to be seen by a doctor. You won’t be the only person on your GP’s books who is bedbound and needs medical care - what does your surgery usually do for patients in this situation? And what care support do you have for your daily needs - eating, washing etc?
Persistent abdominal bloating in women can have all kinds of causes, and it’s important you’re checked over to rule out anything serious (I am sure you’ve googled already possible underlying issues).

What action have you taken so far?

Ofcourse they come out to housebound patients. You need to ring again. If they tell you the same, ring 111 for advice. But Doctors 100% come out

onlygeese · 30/03/2026 17:55

I have to agree you really need to see a Dr one way or another. This is important.

I've no idea if anyone else is in a similar position to me. I don't have any help with washing so have to use wet wipes, I barely eat as have no appetite, maybe a sandwich a day. I've tried getting help both NHS and private and got nowhere. Even phoned the Samaritans twice and they didn't answer!!!

Yes they do.
I have had GP's out for mil, fil, Mum and Nan before

TulipsDaffsAndSunshine · 30/03/2026 19:42

Call 911 op and aak them what you should do.

Not 911. Call 111, they will help you.
It may be that 3 years ago they were in a post covid being difficult phase. They will definitely cone & see you. You need to insist & not be fobbed off. 111 if not.

Could your share with us the reason why you are housebound? Do you have a physical disability? It's worrying that you are in a position where you feel no one will come to your aid. Could that be somehow because of how you are asking or that they are unaware of why you are unable to come to the surgery? I am more than able to get myself to my GP's surgery, so if I were to ask for a doctor to come to my house, they would want to know why. My next-door-neighbour is bed-bound with severe osteoporosis and the doctors absolutely do come to see her and care for her. Not only do you urgently need to see a doctor about your bloating, but it sounds like you need to let them know about any other needs you have. They may not be the ones to deliver those services, but they can put you in touch with social services or whoever might help you. Please don't say that there is no one who could possibly help you. You may have run into brick walls before, but you definitely do need help.

Pepperedpickles · 30/03/2026 20:27

Why are you housebound?

Doctors do come out if you cannot leave the house. You just need to be really firm about why you cannot get to the surgery and ask for a home visit.

Yes sorry typo!

Justwingingit2005 · 30/03/2026 22:47

Bloating that doesn't come and go is a red flag for ovarian cancer.
Please get it checked out.
My mums GP kept saying it was ibs / menopause etc. It was cancer. She died.

My partner was going up the doctors every week for weeks in 2023 trying to get help, they didn't want to know. He has had major heart surgery today, second time in three years and it really upsets me I can't visit him in hospital. He was looking after me and now I'm on my own. My friend contacted social services in 2023, they said they would write to me - I never received the letter. I've had no help from doctors, even tried privately but they wouldn't help. I will try doing the online contact form.

I'm tempted to say 'then what do you expect us to do?' You are at an impasse; you either find a way to get out of your house or you find a way to impress on 111 or your GP that you need to see someone regarding your health.

Your age may mean you have acquired the post-menopausal belly that people who were once pregnant, especially if delivered by C-section, seem to acquire, or it may be something serious like ovarian cancer.

I hope you get some kind of resolution anyway.
