Hi

I ate a pink burger - roughly how long Do I have left?

it was pink in the middle and I stopped eating it when I realised but the burger was massive so didn’t realise until pretty late. At a family bbq so didn’t want to be rude and pretended I was full up.

what happens now lol

I think most of the french population wouldn't be here if eating a pink burger was a danger. I recently was served a burger there that was more raw than cooked. I struggled with that.

My partner was served a pink beef burger in Spain.
That evening all hell broke loose. He was so ill, both ends, for 2 days. It was awful for him.
Salmonella, e-coli? Who knows.

I don’t care what reassurances folks offer on here. We, as a couple, will never eat a pink beef burger again.

@ElleneAsanto says, the danger is that by mincing beef you expose all the surfaces to contaminants. So the inside is problematic in a burger as undercooking just heats bacteria to ideal rapid multiplication conditions without killing them.
Rare burgers, very popular in France, are really not a good idea. Steak tartare has quite a high strike rate.

Theres a worrying amount of ignorance on this thread. Food poisoning isn't pretty.

Anyway @Whyyougottobeanonymous chances are you'll be ok, especially with a few good swigs of red wine just in case! You were right to be cautious though, despite the general opinions on here.

I ordered steak tartare in France last year. It came topped with a raw egg yolk. It was yummy. Still alive.

It's raw pork and chicken you need to worry about. Beef is often served nearly raw!

I used to work with someone who would eat raw mince straight out the pack for her lunch. As far as I am aware she is still alive and kicking.

Absolutely,it's a risky business,my BIL was SO ill for weeks ,he was veggie for years afterwards!

As a young child my mum had to put a lock on our fridge as both my sister and I would sneak down at night to eat raw mince steak and raw sausages. We're both fine. You'll be fine.

Do you still do it? I've never grown out of it.

No, but the burgers that the French DO eat pink, and mostly don’t poison them, are often frozen. You seemed to be suggesting that they didn’t eat frozen burgers?

Mince is easier to contaminate than steak, and the fresher the mince, I would suppose the less likely it is to have nasties. But French people don’t really like cooking any beef beyond medium and I doubt any distinction for frozen steak hache is made by many.

My son had a 'posh' burger in a pub in the Lake District, he was half way through eating it before I realised how undercooked the middle was............we barely made it back to the accommodation, racing down country lanes for about an hour, before it was coming out both ends🙈 now if that had been me I'd have been off food for a fortnight, guess what he wanted for breakfast next day on the way home.............🍔🍟🥤

I did that too as a child. I still eat raw sausages, raw bacon, raw mince. Not raw chicken or pork but I am not in the least concerned if I cook a roast chicken and it’s still a little pink around the joints. I’m 70, hardly every get d and v, so presumably have built up a healthy immunity. I happily eat street food in third world countries if I have seen it come out of hot oil or an oven but I am wary of chilled food in second rate restaurants, especially in UK

I would disagree,
Beef steak is sterile on the inside but not on the outside, so it fine to have a rare steak, (still sterile inside but cooked on the outside.
But if you mince it up into a burger you mix up the 'unsterile' outside with the sterile inside so unless you cool it thoughly (at least 65+) you risk inside the being contaminated.

Chicken is different and you can not be assured that the inside is sterile. Don't eat pink chicken.

I don't know anything about lamb or prawns. Except one is white and fluffy and looks nice while the other is grey and looks like a something in a surgeons kidney bowl.
