to ask what you keep in your freezer?

Watched a Gordon Ramsey programme where he said he kept sliced frozen bagels in his freezer, so he's always got a quick brunch.

This had never occurred to me so I wondered what other freezer tricks I am missing out on.

To kick things off these are normally to be found lurking in my freezer:

Frozen veg (fast food for the dc when I can't be bothered to cook)

Fishfingers (See above)

Pizza base - Made in batch. And frozen for a quick pizza when I can't be bothered to cook (I see a theme emerging ...)

Banana bread, flapjacks etc - made in batch for after school snack.

Ice - For alcohol.

Frozen onions - For when I can be bothered to cook but not cry.

What do you keep in yours?

Fishfingers/veggie fingers
Quorn sausages
Oven chips
Peas, sweetcorn & soya beans
Leftover bread crusts for use later
Leftover shop bought pastry
One Bombay potato pie as the recipe makes 2 but we only ate one
Cranberries
Ice cubes
A bottle of Vodka
Various half eaten tubs of ice cream

Plus various plastic containers with brown substances - gravy, curry sauces, pasta sauce, leftover portions of food that i was convinced i would recognise in the freezer but now can't Confused

CakePops · 11/10/2012 12:31

Does anyone freeze wholemeal bread crusts? What do you use them for?

OP posts:
Beanbagz · 11/10/2012 12:36

I use them as a topping (with pecorino cheese & pesto) for salmon fillets. Or as a breadcrumb topping for vegetable crumbles.

CakePops · 11/10/2012 12:40

I do salmon parcels with pesto, great idea to add breadcrumbs. Dd1 will love that.

Right now theres lamb mince, fishcakes, chips, ice blocks, a solitary bread roll, smiley faces, peas, ice cream. We have pretty much depleted our frozen meat stash so need to stock up again.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 11/10/2012 13:24

Actually Cakepops pigeon breasts are lovely sliced and fried in a bit of seasoned flour with strips of bacon. Gorgeous on a salad.

And yes the pie is homemade. Smile

I keep lots of offer packs of minge in mine. Minge is so very versatile.

Also have:
Cooked meat leftovers
Fresh meat and fish
Ice block coolers for the picnic basket because I haven't taken them out this year yet
Soup
Ice cream
Pasta sauce that I froze in ice cube trays and bagged, so that when DS is whining for pasta I only need one portion out rather than opening a whole jar slattern mummy
Milk but frozen in pints. Love OliviaMN's suggestion on ice cube trays though, will use that next time.
Chopped up onion in bags so I don't have to cry every time I make something with minge.

CakePops · 11/10/2012 13:53

I missed the minge thread - oh that did make me laugh!

raw meat, fish
lots of frozen leftovers in toddler-size portions
home made ice lollies
parmesan
ginger
frozen veg
breads (pitta, naan, bagels)
egg whites (on the off chance that one day i might think of a way to use up these leftovers)
frozen blueberries, raspberries, bought when on offer
haagen dazs dulce leche icecream Smile

I am thrilled (easily pleased) to here the ginger suggestion.

I try to have a bag of frozen lime leaves in the freezer - they are way cheaper that way - you can get them from Thai shops for about £1.50 for a few dozen million leaves.

I find lemongrass easier to deal with if it's been frozen, too.

CakePops · 11/10/2012 18:33

I think I should pop my parmasan in the freezer.

Bulk buying and freezing from Chinese/thai supermarkets is a great tip.

Coffee beans certainly need to be kept in the freezer. They're the only thing in the freezer at work.

FredFredGeorge · 12/10/2012 11:20

Coffee Beans shoud not be kept in the freezer, as soon as you take them out and then put them back in (to take a few out to grind say) then the warm wet air will condense in the freezer and your beans are now moist. Moisture is the worst thing for beans.

You can maybe freeze them once, particularly if they are vacuum packed in a small quantity but that's not very practical.

Room temperature air tight container, and buy often.

Scholes34 · 12/10/2012 11:51

Well our coffee tastes just fine.

what is the genius butter wrapper idea? scrolled back and can't find it.

OliviaLMumsnet · 13/10/2012 00:48

@Bluestocking

And, my piece de resistance of inherited weirdness, butter wrappers, neatly folded in a freezer bag, then I always have something to butter a cake tin/cover a chicken breast with. My mum does this!
justbogoffnow · 13/10/2012 01:00

Whole chicken, half leg of lamb, gammon joint, mince, chicken thighs, chicken fillets, salmon, haddock, pizzas, chips, sweetcorn, vanilla ice cream, choc ices, pitta bread, batches of bolognese sauce, batches of shepherds pie filling, puff pastry, braising steak, peas, top tier of wedding cake (over 10 yrs old so won't be edible, stays there for sentimental reasons), frozen blackcurrants, an apple crumble.

is there a knack to freezing fresh herbs?, i've tried and never succeeded.

Japple · 13/10/2012 17:22

Herbs that Freeze well are:Basil,Borage,Chives,Dill,Oregano,Lemon grass,Mint,Sage,Savory,Sorrel,Tarragon and Thyme.
You wash them, slice if needed,Pat them dry..lay them in a Large, flat tray in the freezer. Now, put them into plastic bags which are labeled and dated. Jill.

CakePops · 13/10/2012 17:24

I do what japple says and just freeze in portions.
