The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Hi how do you all know how many calories you have eaten?

Today I have had (NFD)

--Small bowl of Morrison's mighty malties with semi skimmed milk

--Cheese and Broccoli pasta n sauce

--Can of Morrison's source (energy drink) that has lasted most of the day

--Hot chocolate at Morrison's

--Small box of Raisins

--A third of a jar of Pataks Korma sauce with chicken and veg plus a garlic and coriander naan

--Am thinking of having an orange as feeling hungry

How can I work out how many calories I have eaten?

Some of it shows the calorie count on the packet but the curry jar doesn't.

Also I am anaemic and have been prescribed iron tablets that the doctor suggested taking with the soluble vitamin C tablets, do I need to count these in the calorie count?

Thanks :)

First FD done with a total count of 485 cals. I am so chuffed!

The 'I can have it tomorrow' mantra works so well.

Amelia, many of us use the My Fitness Pal app or website to determine calories. Just google and you will find it.

I am guessing your iron and vit c woudn't have many calories, so perhaps don't worry about including them?

Another new thread. It is amazing the pace of these threads!

In the last thread there was discussion about "diet" or "WOL or WOE". I guess it does depend on your own personal desires and feelings about it. It can be used as a "diet" to get to desired weight, then just go back to your old way of eating. But I prefer to look at it as a WOL as I know if I were to stop once reaching goal, I'll just get weighty again, as I did on all the other diets I did.

I have been thinking a lot about this WOE and here are some thoughts:
• Eating only 500 calories a day, for two days a week has taught me all about hunger, how it will pass, how I often eat when I am not hungry, and how I won’t faint from it.
• I feel more in control than I ever have in the past. I have done almost all the diets available out there. Each time, I lost weight. But I had to deprive myself which ultimately lead to failure and weight gain. This feels like it is doable, and long term(for life I hope).
• I now feel very optimistic that I will lose weight and gain health. Instead of feeling ashamed of my body and envious of slim people, I now look at slim friends and think, “it won’t be long, and I too will be that slim and also healthy”.
• I really like that on NFD, I am able to manage my appetite and eat more mindfully. I really think about what I want to eat, why I want to eat it and whether I really should. I used to just shovel it in without really thinking, then feel lousy for not being mindful.
• For me, I feel a sense of freedom on this WOE. I can eat anything. Whether it is fatty or sugary or creamy, I can eat it if I want to. There is no food that is off limits. But what I love is that I don’t actually want to fill up on all the wrong stuff. It is almost like this WOE has re-educated my palate and my mind.

What’s not to love about that? Thanks

Hi all non fast day here I have completely over eaten again today Hmm

I have been fasting all over Christmas and following it and only really missed one fast day but have went over on cals some fast days and I'm not loosing weight. I havnt been on the thread much and I think that's why I'm not doing so well. I've also been eating the evil chocolate again Confused which before Christmas I had stopped

Goodness, this moves so fast.

I still can't believe that I've managed my first FD. After my high-on-tuna-and-pickled onions thing, I had 80 calories left. I toyed with having some tinned tomatoes then realised that I just didn't want any more food. .

So instead i had 200 mls of skimmed milk with 5 g of Green and Black's cocoa. On my, such a delicious and satisfying treat. I think i ended my day being 20 calories over, so I'm quite pleased.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one getting a bit high too.

It's great being able to tap into this thread. Well done everyone. I'm going to bed where i shall dream of breakfast.

Another new thread, already, barely managed to post on the last one!

Zzz congrats on the appetite! I was driving home yesterday, a 2.5 hr journey and had to stop for a week managed to resist the sweets then are an apple in the car instead and could barely manage to finish it, amazing!

Amelia I use MFP for calorie counting, I find it's pretty good.

FD today, looking forward to it! Weighing in tomorrow

Mscnile - yes I think this time of year doesn't help. Yesterday I noticed I wasn't that hungry but when I got home in the evening I proceeded to comfort eat so much chocolate! I'm going to have to ban it from my home again, if it's not there I can't eat it

hopeful Yes! I could've written that, in fact I think I probably did a few million posts and a couple of fasts ago!

That's how I feel too, perhaps for a certain type of over-eater the fasting re-sets the appetite and by finally, FINALLY after years of deprivation and fat-free Hell we are finally satisfied, so then we are freed from the out of control hungry feelings which have lead us to binges in the past?

Whatever it is, I'll take it! I'm fully aware this may be the honeymoon and there will be lots of struggles and setbacks, but like your username, I am now at least hopeful!

Morning all! Well done yesterday's fasters! I finished the day on around 600 cal in the end - I went 100 over by going for a heartier soup and deciding to put a spoonful of creme fraiche on top. I feel OK about that to be honest. Next time (tomorrow :( ) I'll try eating different things at different times and see if it helps me feel better.

Just had two slices of toast with lemon curd for breakfast. It was delicious but I am really feeling full now. On a normal day I'd have waited until after the nursery run, when I was ravenous, then eaten a normal breakfast and been snacking again within an hour. It'll be interesting to see how this morning goes.

zedzedzed · 15/01/2014 08:04

Amelia I use MFP, set it to maintain and it'll calculate what you can eat for a day to stay the same weight, but then because of your 2 fast days you will build up a deficit of calories over the week.

It has a big database of brands and foods and you can save meals to make it quicker and add ingredients to make and save your own recipe.
It's amazing how much is in things and how little is in others and that's really important for FDs (and on non FDs you'll be amazed how much yumminess you can have. Plus you can add up your whole week and either take it easy at the weekend if you've gone over or have a few drinks/extra cake if you're under. Good luck!

mcsnile Yes! It's mental eh?! Woo-hoo! Good luck with weigh in tomorrow (I'm not weighing till Feb!)

Morning everyone :) have decided to axe this week's 2nd FD - I have a skills assessment for a job tomorrow, need to prep today and am crazy busy on Wednesday anyway, so I'm taking the pressure off myself for this week. No biggie, will get back on it next week. Great to avoid the failure boomerang, iyswim Grin

Mmm, haven't had lemon curd for ages!

Can't decide whether to fast today or not. I ate so much crap yesterday that I undid most of my good work from Monday's fast! I reined it in by the evening by having a healthy dinner and closing the kitchen, but had consumed significant amounts of chocolate both at home and work before then. I might just eat sensibly today, or do 16:8, or just go the whole hog and call it a FD. I'm certainly in no rush to start eating.

Well done new fasters - most of you seem to be coping really well so quickly!

This is definitely a WOL for me. I've ranged from 5:2, liquid fasts and 6:1 to no fasting for a month without gaining more than a pound or two, so I am very confident it works.

jemima get well soon.

Thanks for yet another new thread, bigchoc

Giving it another blast today. Ended up eating 1200 calories yesterday (mostly consumed after 4pm) which was still under my TDEE but I really wanted to fast properly.

I haven't had anything to eat yet- going to hang on for a while and have boiled egg.

Good luck for today

Eek! Things do really move fast around here.

1st FD yesterday was surprisingly ok. Learnt that I don't need a big sandwich for lunch - that a big bowl of spicy chicken noodle soup is brilliant. So much so that I had it again today (with the addition of a slice of toast).

As expected, afternoon was tricky - DD1 had a play date so I was hovering around the kitchen/ playroom keeping an eye on things and the pull of the cupboard was huge.

I think I may have gone slightly over the 500, but not too much.

I also probably went over my TDEE today as I was celebrating getting a first in my Masters by having coffee and cake with a friend - but the light lunch balanced it out a bit.

2nd FD tomorrow. Fingers crossed it's ok.

These threads are so energetic, I love it. Thanks to you guys who keep them going. I've been looking at the links above and there is so much useful stuff to read and watch.

Zedzed hat off to you for not weighing in until Feb, can I just ask what spurred you on to make that decision. I need to divorce myself from the scales and not get so hung up,on fluctuations.

vvviola wow 1st in your Masters that's a great achievement! No wonder you celebrated. I find nished my in 2012 and it was such a relief.

hopeful great post and I think you're summing it up for a lot of peeps on here.

Just wondered who else was being t-total in Jan? I am and at the minute feel cushioned because I'm not drinking but come Feb I think that's when the challenge will really start for me. Trying to ingrain good habits now so I'm prepared for Feb. don't tend to snack a lot until I've had a bottle glasses of Wine Wink

Hopeful - lovely post! Thanks

Positively9 - so you didn't gain during that whole Xmas/no loss period??..... Celebrate that - it is more than many of us managed half a stone me included! Well done!!!

I think for many of us - as with general life - the whole of Jan can be a funny month. Very strange come down month after the build towards Christmas. Not just food, but everything. Tbh - any achievements this month will be considered miracles bonuses. When I think back to previous years, I can already see a marked improvement on where I am - across the board.

As spring draws nearer and the days get longer, not to mention some much needed sunshine hopefully starting to appear; I think it will get easier for all of us.

So if you're doing well already - then give yourself extra pats on the back. Well done you!!! Grin [gold cup]

Successful fast day yesterday. Somewhere around 600, so I'll take that thank you very much!
Attempting back to back today, in order to fit two in, as have couple of meals out later in week and won't manage it then.

Good luck all today! Can't keep up either (yawn), but from what I am seeing, the mood has turned from doubtful/fearful to positive and happy, and you're all making brilliant progress!

Whoever was talking about euphoria yesterday - yes! I definitely get a genuine hyper happy buzz out of it sometimes, especially in the early days. The good news is, it is all legal and healthy!! Grin

I agree that January is a difficult month after the abundance of food during and post- Christmas. Last year I didn't start 5:2 until February as I'd spent all of January dithering about it (couldn't bring myself to leave Christmas behind!). But by the time February rolled round I was on it!

NSV for me this morning - for only the second time in 18 years of running I got straight out of bed and out the door. I usually have to have a coffee and some movement IYKWIM before I dare venture out, but didn't wake up tll 6:20 and knew I had no time. Would have put it off for tomorrow but didn't want to mess up my FD.

It was a miserably sloggy 4 miles, but at least it's done and can be ticked off on the schedule. Huzzah.

Started 5:2last week and am doing 4th FD today. After an initial loss was spurred on and have stuck to it, not overheating on NFDs, no alcohol etc. ave been genuinley pleased with myself.

This morning, have gained 2lbs!!! Can anyone explain why?

Am now just grimly determined rather than highly motivated. Does not feel positive.
