Vasectomy at 23

Hi so yeah I'm not a mum obviously but my partner uses mumsnet alot and she's told me there are dad's out there too that use it for advice too anyway to the point.

I'm 23 and have two lovely girls and both me and my partner are 100% sure that we don't want more. She's been on hormonal contraceptive before i.e. the inplant and we'll... It wasn't for her. Don't think she'd be offended if I used the word phyco to describe what it did to her. We've spoke about other options and the go recommend the marina coil although from what reaserch we've done neither of us think that this will be much better.

I suggested getting the snip but she doesn't seem convinced that's the right decision as she thinks if (God forbid) we break up in 10 years time I may want another family (her words not mine). I think however even if that happened I have my kids and I wouldn't want more, especially not with someone else as I would hate to think my girls would feel I have another family that they're not a part of.

I've not discussed this with my GP but I'm pretty sure he will just laugh at me and tell me I'm too young. was just wondering what any of you guys think and if anyone's partners got the snip as early as I'm planning.

Whaaasat Mountain? Where are you living. In the UK a private vasectomy is £600-800 usually.

I've had the copper coil twice, once for 7 years, and after was shocked my periods were no longer 8 days ... then years later I had the coil again. After 4 months the blood was too much- however, I do think I'd prefer that then getting pregnant and I am glad I had the original one put in.

Now I use condoms.

A quick search on private vasectomys cost £1600-3500, which doesn't seem that bad. I think if you got 2 kids at 23 and you've decided that's enough then that should be enough. Probably you have these operations reversed.

23 is very young for such a lifetime change.
Mr SHK has just had it done, but he's over 35 now and we're absolutely certain that there are no more kids on the horizon.

There is also the (terrible and not very likely) possibility that one or both of your children might die rather than you finding a new partner.

What about condoms plus the temperature method? If your partner is happy to monitor her temperature regularly and consistently it can be reliable.

Considering it’s women who usually take on the lions share of childrearing, (and not limited to a split parenting situation), I think society should be biting the hand off any man who already has children and wishes to have a vasectomy.

No chance that they'll do one on someone so young, I'm afraid :(

Can I have the operation if I'm single?

Yes. But if you're under 30, you'll find many surgeons are reluctant to do it in case your circumstances change and you regret it later.

My ex husband asked about getting the snip age 25 after we had our second child. He knew he didn’t want any more children (turned out he didn’t want the first two a few years down the line!)
He was told he would not get the snip on the NHS so young. He was told he would need to be over 30 to be considered.
It’s ridiculous. Sorry I can’t be of more help. I have heard bad things about the Mirena coil, but what about the copper coil.

I just think 23 is very young to make such a momentous decision. In 10 years you may well meet somebody else who wishes to have a child.

I am not sure a doctor would agree to do it at such a young age.
Has your partner considered the copper coil rather than the marina. It is just as effective but non hormonal.

They might not let you have one on the NHS at such a young age. You might have to go private. According to my husband the consultation was awful in regards to questions they ask. He was 28 I think. We have 3 children and married.
