FWIW ds2 has hardly mentioned today's test at all. (Is still grumbling about yesterday's though!) As he has passed for the grammar school his results don't really matter - ie whether level 4 or 5 - if not I suppose I would be more agitated.

charlize · 12/05/2004 21:36

I agree Jan Its ridic we are bothered at all about these tests, they are for the schools bebefit not the pupils. If it wasn't for the fact the resultd decide 1st 2nd and third in class at prize night i wouldn't care.
Ds really wants to come 1st this year as he is usually 2nd in class and this is his last chance at primary.

I've tried to tell him it doesn't matter but he won't listen. So Iam keeping my fingers crossed cos he would be so delighted.

Hi Charlize, yes it would be great for him if he got a level 5 but we'll wait and see. We'll be happy if he gets a 4, after all as you said it's for the schools benefit really, apparently they aren't even used for streaming at secondary as they do CATs at some point for that. (yet more testing).

Janh - great argument in favour of grammar schools, if it stops them getting stressed about SATs

Report
Hulababy · 13/05/2004 09:22

BTW don't worry about CATs. There is no revision or planning work for them at all. At my school we do them in the first half term in Y7. They are not very long. There are 3 types, all done in one week. They are done in the exam hall - easier to administer. But the children do not have to revise at all.

oh scary reading for me - my son had his yr 6 SATS next year. Do year 6 and year 5 SATS results count towards streaming in secondary school? Someone told me this.

Congrats on your son getting a grammar place janh

DD tells me todays test was pretty easy - looking forward to the last one tomorrow.

My ds is gutted about todays test. he really wanted to get 100% as he works at level 7 in maths but he knows he got the last question wrong
Obviously I've told him its ridiculous to expect yourself to get 100% we are only human after all.
He is pretty sure all the others are right as he checked them twice.

Report
charlize · 13/05/2004 17:28

Popsy or mummysurfer do you know how many marks the last question was worth? The one about the triangle thingy that was not to actual size.

Report
popsycal · 13/05/2004 17:37

1 mark i think

can double check for you tomorrow
def not more than 2

OP posts:

what did he put for the question?

OP posts:

mummysurfer · 13/05/2004 17:45

was it the triangle in the square??

i found today's VERY STRESSFUL

he tackled each question in the strangest manner! at one point adding the units column, then subtracting the tens. one of the first ?s was something like

? x 4 = 120

he did random multiplication, hoping to hit on the right answer...i couldn't believe what i was seeing. he's normally very good at maths, it being a universal language.

nevermind, only one to go.

Report
charlize · 13/05/2004 17:54

hi, he says he put 60 but the answer was 64. because it said the triangle was not the actual size he measured it with his ruler. oopps
he realised his mistake afterwards and is kicking himself cos its an easy question .
that would be great popsy if you could check what tge mark was.
or perhaps you know mummy surfer. BTW did you think it was hard or easy as sat tests go?
At least ds is v confident he got all the mental test correct.

Popsycal my SATS guru - a bit of advice please. Yesterday pm my dd's class completed a SATS maths practice paper. DD got just one wrong, 2 kids (definite teacher favourites) got none wrong. The 2 kids then went on to do other extra work so they wouldn't get bored (!) whilst the rest of the class sat around. Would this have been the extra task and why if dd had only got one wrong would she not have done it herself?

dogwalker · 13/05/2004 19:19

Hi all, when I asked my ds how he had got on today he said "oh it was pimps (easy)", and that the mental test was OK too, however . . . he hasn't said anything about any of the questions except one that said what is 5% of 3600, and I said oh well that's easy just find out 10% and half it - did you do that? He went fairly quiet and said no I did it a different way and so I don't think I got the right answer! Oh dear. He also said he couldn't answer the last mental question and had to leave it. He said there were four or five questions that he'd found really hard but he'd had a go at them and that's all we have asked him to do. He hates maths. Unfortunately his younger brother is a bit of a maths whizz and although only in year 3 is doing year 5 and 6 work in class already. This just seems to put ds1 under more pressure.

jampot - the guidlines do not allow for children doing other work during a SATs test. if they finish before others and hand in their papers they should sit and do something that is NOT related to the test (eg reading a book). If they do not hand in their test, they should not do anything else.

Can't imagine that they would be given the 'more able' tasks during the SATs test

But to be honest, nothing would surprise me anymore

So is level 6 tomorrow then jampot?!!??!

the triangle in the square WAS 64 - sorry little chalirze

WTF I have just re-read your post jampot - what the hell were they doing a practice test for the day before the real test?!!?!?!?!?
they had that damn reading test then a PRACTICE test!?!?!?
roll on september for your dd!

sorry it makes me cross - we sat and watched finding nemo this afternoon........how can they make them do practice test!?!?

Report

Yes Popsy - our kids have also been having fun in the afternoons as have done all the tests in the mornings. Practice papers this week indeed,

Report
charlize · 13/05/2004 21:59

I too Am shocked that the kids would be doing practice papers this week. Ds teacher thinks the exams they have got are stressful enough and they have been doing arty stuff in the afternoons which they all love.
jampot i doubt the teacher would hold it against your dd getting one wrong or tgat she would give the extra task to the other 2 pupils based on one practice test.

more likely she already had in mind who would need extra tasks.
did this teacher mark all 20-30 satsexams after they had done them?
She must be a glutton for punishment.
