congratulations BBB
agree with others that doing all the grades (or any!) is not necessary for everyone, and distinctions also not the be all and end all. I only got one in my clarinet exams as I perform much better in a concert situation than for some dusty old git in an exam room. I retired from piano exams after grade 2 age 6. and I am a se,i-pro musician now with a degree and a postgrad performance diploma.
I also agree that some teachers are just not able to teach younger children or even adjust their methods to different pupils. I remember one clarinet pupil I had who categorically stated that she didn't want to do exams, and had changed teachers as her previous teacher said they wouldn't teach her any more because of this - poor thing. we had a lovely time just looking at music she wanted to play and improving her playing. There does seem to be a certain type of embittered old sod kicking about (and they are often piano teachers Fob for some reason) that really puts kids off and it's such a shame.
good luck Beetroot. DS sounds very musical and enthusiastic and I hope you end up with someone who encourages that.
