Pre Diabetic & worried

Hello, I'm just looking for some support really. I've just been told that I'm pre Diabetic, & I've been told that I will have a phonecall with the nurse but that's not for a few weeks now.

if you are pre-diabetic it maybe possibleto reverse it by diet just ask, it depends on type etc,and whether you are overweight etc but generally it is low carb diet and regular meals rather than snacks

Don't worry. It doesn't mean that you will go on to develop diabetes, and there is no urgency, which is why you will be waiting several weeks for them to contact you.

What it means is that they have detected increased insulin resistance in your bloodstream, and this can be controlled by changes to your lifestyle and what you eat. They will talk you through it when they call.

Michael Moseley and his wife have written some excellent books on how to reverse pre-diabetes with diet/lifestyle changes.

I feel urgency like I want to do something now! But I don't want to Google the wrong thing. Obviously I know that I stop eating so much junk food & increase my activity level to try & lose weight, but what else?

What should I be eating?

Low carb is a good way to reduce blood sugar, I’ve gone from pre- diabetic to normal range following low carb. But if you stop you’ll probably end up pre-diabetic again.

At the moment I use mounjaro for weight loss and my blood sugars are normal. If you are eligible and can afford it you could look into that.

A low carb diet will definitely help you.

Look up Michael Moseley's Fast800 diet. That's been specifically designed to help people with diabetes, but will also work well if you're pre-diabetic.

How overweight are you?

Thank you, I will look up Michael Moseley. I havn't been weighed for years. Last time was 2020 & I was overweight then (12 stone at 5 foot 4) all of my clothes still fit from then but I've definitely got more of a tummy/some sleeves are tight.

Despite what a lot of people think, you can be pre-diabetic without being overweight.

A low-GI diet is good, reduce carbs a bit and increase veg, swap white bread for wholemeal, get some fresh air every day and make sure you have enough sleep. All of those will help.

If you have the chance to prevent full blown diabetes then honestly do it;I'm a type two and despite a huge weight loss since being diagnosed (nearly 6st) I'm really struggling with bringing my sugar under control and I'm currently on a daily low dose of insulin as medication isn't helping anymore.

There's a recent show on ch4 called glucose goddess that gives good tips on reducing glucose spikes by making simple changes.

I reversed mine in 8 weeks on mounjaro and lost 3 stone as well. Had pre diabetes for 12 years.
I'm still on mounjaro.

I'm scared to eat anything at all today... I keep reading things with lists of 'good' food & then I look on another one & this food is a 'bad' one.

Go and check out the Fast800, as we've already recommended! That will make it very clear to you what you should be eating, and what you need to avoid.

There's no need to be scared about food or eating. That's silly and over-dramatic. You need to eat. You just need to eat food that will help you lose the weight and take you out of the 'pre-diabetic' range. And the Fast800 diet will ensure that you do that.

I'm not trying to be silly or overdramatic. This is my response when I don't understand something. Instead of getting it wrong & causing myself more damage, I won't risk eating anything.

I doubt that it makes sense to anybody else but I'm posting here for support.

I'm prediabetic but healthy.bmi. i was eating and drinking too much sugar, cut that out and upped exercise.

I actually feel much better for it.

You can do it op, small steps.

What do you eat regularly now that can be changed?

Docyou exercise?

BIWI That's what I'm posting for, so that I don't tip into 'I won't eat anything'. I know that I've already had advice & didn't realise that I wasn't allowed to post again, since I'd already been told some things.

I was only told this late yesterday so this is a whole new world to me, I've followed all of the advice on the thread & was still unsure, hence posting again.

But clearly I'm just being silly.

I was looking for some support on here but that was a mistake.

In addition to the advice given above, my advice would be to reduce your consumption of processed/ ultra processed food as much as possible. It's crazy how much added sugar there is, not just in ready meals but also in canned sweetcorn, pickles, mayonnaise, seasonings, bread, etc ... Try to cook as much as possible yourself or if you don't have time, eat simple meals like frozen vegetables with lentils or plain meat/fish (unexciting I know but easy and healthy).

The Diabetes uk website is very good @DewyDrops it has recipes and advice. I was diagnosed as prediabetic and was sent on an nhs course which was very helpful. I cut out food with added sugar and found nuts helpful for a quick snack. Try eating a high protein breakfast such as eggs. You're right that sometimes advice seems to be contradictory. The main thing is cut right down on sugar, swap simple carbohydrates like white bread, pasta and rice for the brown versions and increase the proportion of vegetables and legumes on your plate. It's fun exploring substitutes for the usual carbs. Cauliflower rice is surprisingly nice but wild rice or brown rice are ok in moderation. Prediabetes isn't in itself a health risk so it's a useful warning sign and you don't need to panic. You need to stabilise your blood sugar so eating lower GI foods and having regular meal times will be most helpful. I lost half a stone and am no longer pre-diabetic. It sounds like you'll be very motivated to make changes. Good luck!
