Hiya, I'd like to join in please. so my reasons,
In 2013 we had a lovely new kitchen installed went on our first foreign holiday with dc since 2006 and generally possibly spent a little over what we should have. It's not too bad because we had the money to do it, but now we've booked this year's holiday and are starting down the slippery slope of not being ok with money so I want to nip it in the bud asap.
So i'm actively trying to change things. so far dh has luckily got himself a job with a company car, which is just as well because car no.2 is not well, costing us a few hundred pounds every other month if not more. So it'll be good to get rid of it. Also it will save us paying 2 x insurance, the car tax is due end of Jan so we won't need to pay that. Plus our 2nd car is very cheap on fuel/road tax/insurance so it'll be good just to pay for that, although I do realise the company car will have the benefit attached but hey ho, i'm sure it'll be better for us to only have to keep one car. Just hope dh likes the new job
I did my first Aldi shop the other day and was surprised how much less it was than Tesco, it's going to be a bit of a trial for now seeing which products we like and which we don't but we'll give it a go. I was easily spending £100 a week in Tesco so anything less is a bonus. I have also saved the delivery saver cost, but will now be driving to Aldi (approx ten min drive) but i'm sure it'll save us money, or I hope it will! I've also had a look at approved foods tonight, does anyone have experience using it? Is it worth it? I have plenty of space in my kitchen to store things. Another thought was I wondered if it would be better to buy for a longer period ie 2 weeks or a month than go weekly shopping? Time is limited as I work school hours every day which is why I LOVED online Tesco shopping, so if I could do a fortnightly shop or monthly it might be better, obviously I need to top up fresh produce more often. Not sure, does anyone do a monthly shop and find it better? I think i'll stick to a weekly Aldi shop for now and see how I go!
Another thing I have done so far is to unsubscribe from all the emails for things like Tesco, Amazon, groupon, wowcher etc which I think will take tempation away? And save my sanity looking at them everytime they appear in my inbox!
I am investigating fixing the mortgage too, interest rates are going to change at some point (probably) and at the moment the fixed 5 year rates appear to be quite good so I'm going to get that in motion tomorrow. I tried to do it online earlier but I couldn't work out the joint things dh and I have and I didn't want to carry on and get a mark on our credit score for mucking it up so i'm going to call them tomorrow instead, possibly being a dumbarse but better safe than sorry!
I'm quite pleased that we have no birthdays now until April, other than if dc get invited to a friends party of course! Other than that our family are all later in the year plus i've already sorted and paid for dd's bday treat in June, 1d concert so this year it'll just be her pressie to pay for.
My other major thing I need to do is lose weight, so i'm going to get out the running shoes again and see if I can stick to it, I did really well last year for 3 months and then the kitchen happened (took WEEKS!) and I fell off the exercise wagon, back to it. I thought that I might reward myself, everytime I go out I will put £1 or £2 in a jar and see if I can save enough to buy myself a new laptop/ipad or whatever, then I may stick to it and also get a nice treat! plus hoping trying to diet will save money on food I will also not buy any alcohol for me, but I do have a good few bottles of vodka/wine/prosecco to get through before I would need to buy any anyway
That became a bit of an epic (and boring) post, I will go and read some more of the thread now for extra ideas.
Happy budgeting everyone, hope to get to know you all whilst sharing our tips and experiences
