Grants for small businesses hit by Corona - advice?

Cash grants of £25,000 will be available for businesses with a rateable value of less than £51,000, and for 700,000 of the smallest businesses a £3,000 grant announced in the Budget will be increased to £10,000

The username tells you my job!

I now have absolutely no income. Not a penny. I have massive bills to pay. I don't qualify for UC or any other benefits because I have money invested in property (which has always provided me with just enough to get by in a frugal way).

I've now spent a week trying to find out how to claim these grants for businesses with a RV of less than £12,000 (and I know I am one of these). But I am still clueless. Can anyone please, please help?

@LizzieMacQueen no. Sole traders are different, different rules apply. There is a different definition.

On a tax return, income from property is separate to income from self employment. The key difference is that you pay NI on self employment income.

The self employed are screwed as it stands currently.

@stayathomegardener I am so sorry. That is awful for you across the board. I hope you can claim something - anything - that would help.

I now don't know if income from FHL counts as 'self employed', or if it's 'income from property'. If the latter, I think I'm probably stuffed, regardless of SBRR. I am going to consult my accountant on Monday.

@Movinghouseatlast Flowers for you too. There's nothing I can usefully add, but I'm sorry you are also in this mess.

Income from FHL is income from property. 100%.

Unless you have set up a Ltd company or partnership.

If you get small business rate relief you get the grant. It is nothing to do with tax. Why do you think you wont get it?

Movinghouseatlast · 21/03/2020 14:12

Oh, and thanks for your kind words. It is awful for all of us but lovely thoughts mean a lot.

HolidayLetter · 21/03/2020 15:03

Thanks, Movinghouseatlast. I suppose I think I won't get it because I have had such a run of atrocious things in the past two years that I find it impossible to believe that anything can happen that isn't completely hellish.

I haven't set up a limited company.

You don't have to set up a limited company, just get the relief.

I have had horrendous stuff too. This business was meant to be a fresh start.

Movinghouseatlast, Flowers.

It's crap. I really hope things look up for you. I wonder how much awful stuff anyone is reasonably expected to cope with.

We had to apply for it as had an email from the council. I think they will review before they pay anything from what I read it could come as early as beginning of april. If you dont need it you dont apply they wont just transfer any money without the applicant making an application for it.

No email from my local council Sad Sad Sad
