What is a "persistent" cough?

Sorry if this has been covered already; i can't find a thread with this title and haven't read every post on the others.

Anyway, what exactly is "persistent"? DH and I both have tickly throats and a tight feeling in our chests but haven't actually coughed at all (well, I have about twice but it was more a clear of the throat, really). No fever.

Youngest child has a cough but he's had it for about 4 weeks.

Should we isolate ourselves and our 3 children for the next 14 days?
