Promoting peace

There’s a lot of very heated debate on this board, as understandably there is a lot of emotion and deeply held beliefs and feelings. When threads descend into us v them arguments, the divide just grows further and peace seems further away.

It got me thinking that it would be amazing to have a thread where people can post links highlighting instances of mutual respect/harmony/caring, small or big, where people on whatever ‘side’ come together peacefully.

When it comes down to it, we are passionate because we care, whatever side we are on. There’s place to hold people accountable, on all sides, and that’s definitely happening on the board, but I thought maybe we could also promote peace too.

I hope this makes sense ♥️

I’ll start it off : this is from 2018, but it’s pretty amazing

just to add - Shabbat is starting here in 30 mins so I won’t be back til tomorrow evening - I’m not starting and abandoning the thread, but won’t be back online until then.

Not sure if you meant this conflict or any conflict so I have taken the liberty of assuming you meant any. Good, decent, hard working, ethical, compassionate leaders committed to peace can achieve great things. RIP John Hume and David Trimble and thank you

@EllaDisenchanted what a lovely thought and idea. Thank you for starting this thread.
There was a few lovely small clips I saw but I didn't save them. If I come across them again I will post on here.

There was one in particular that made me really emotional. In America during Hanukkah a Jewish lady was kindly handing out gifts to people in a shop. I think it was Walmart. She gifted one to a muslim lady and they both hugged. And the hug went on for much longer as they both just cried and cried. I don't know if the lady was Palestinian but from her dress I could tell she was Muslim.

It was a bitter sweet moment where you could tell both were hurting yet both seemed to acknowledge each others pain.

Parkingt111 · 22/12/2023 14:27

Also have a lovely Shabbat 💗

Dulra · 22/12/2023 14:43

Not sure how the clip I posted changed but here it is again

ChalkWitch · 22/12/2023 14:50

@EllaDisenchanted This is definitely what we need more of. Shabbat Shalom.

@Parkingt111 How lovely, it sounds like a beautiful moment and really a lesson to us all at the moment.

LolaSmiles · 22/12/2023 16:58

This is an excellent thread idea.

I've been particularly heartened by some posts from friends of many faiths and none about the need for peace.

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 22/12/2023 23:26

Love this idea for a thread.

“Let us examine our attitude toward peace itself. Too many of us think it is impossible. Too many think it unreal. But that is a dangerous, defeatist belief. It leads to the conclusion that war is inevitable - that mankind is doomed - that we are gripped by forces we cannot control.

We need not accept that view. Our problems are manmade - therefore, they can be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings. Man's reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable - and we believe they can do it again.

I am not referring to the absolute, infinite concept of peace and good will of which some fantasies and fanatics dream. I do not deny the value of hopes and dreams but we merely invite discouragement and incredulity by making that our only and immediate goal.

Let us focus instead on a more practical, more attainable peace - based not on a sudden revolution in human nature but on a gradual evolution in human institutions - on a series of concrete actions and effective agreements which are in the interest of all concerned.

There is no single, simple key to this peace - no grand or magic formula to be adopted by one or two powers. Genuine peace must be the product of many nations, the sum of many acts. It must be dynamic, not static, changing to meet the challenge of each new generation. For peace is a process - a way of solving problems.

With such a peace, there will still be quarrels and conflicting interests, as there are within families and nations. World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor - it requires only that they live together in mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement.

And history teaches us that enmities between nations, as between individuals, do not last forever. However fixed our likes and dislikes may seem, the tide of time and events will often bring surprising changes in the relations between nations and neighbors.

So let us persevere. Peace need not be impracticable, and war need not be inevitable. By defining our goal more clearly, by making it seem more manageable and less remote, we can help all peoples to see it, to draw hope from it, and to move irresistibly toward it.”

What a lovely idea for a thread.

I'm looking forward to reading this one.

Has anyone read this book?

It says despite the people's being enemies for centuries. Stories of Arabs and Jewish people that are uplifting

Thanks everyone. @Parkingt111 I haven’t seen that clip, I’d love to see it if you come across it again.

@Dulra i had the current conflict in mind when I posted, but why not widen it - it’s kind of the point - to promote those moments of humanity and love between everyone, so thank you!

@Helar yes - its easy to see with social media how quickly hate spreads, and polarisation, but the same tool can be used to spread love and peace too- small grassroots change, small steps can happen but spread globally.

@XRAYTHIS no I’ve not seen this book

‘Beacon of hope’: Amid Gaza war, Indian Muslims take care of synagogues

In eastern India’s Kolkata, synagogues are managed by Muslim caretakers. The Israel war won’t change that, they say.

I have no examples to add to this thread, unfortunately, but am a little bit sad that it hasn't taken off like many others in this section. The sentiment behind it is wonderful, however.

I have seen reports of some Israeli's doing good things for people in Gaza which has given me a flicker of hope. I didn't share the reports as they have been getting abuse so would it lead to more trouble for them?.
But they do exist, they are out there.

Wow. Standing together. That's what I call a peace rally. Good luck to them

I’m realise we’ve not posted in this for a while but just seen this and thought it was heartwarming ❤️

Yahya Ben Youssef, z"l, at nearly 100 years old, was one of the last six Jews still living in Yemen until he passed away last Thursday.

His Muslim neighbors helped bury him, as there are no enough Jews remaining in Yemen to carry out the funeral tradition.

The Facebook page for the remaining community said that the funeral "was an act of unity and respect from the local Muslim community, who buried one of the six remaining Jews in the country.
