Cooking the Turkey Crown on Christmas Eve

Has anyone else successfully done this?
It’s a Turkey Crown.

How do I reheat some of it on the day?

It will be fine.

I actually prefer it NOT reheated, just sliced and served. Warm turkey puts me off.

Take this with a pinch, as I’m a vegetarian of 30 years, but my grandma always did this and would carve onto slices on the day and reheat quickly in the oven in the day in a foil covered dish with a bit of gravy to stop it drying out. I think heating up the whole thing would take too long.

This is the best way.

I wouldn't bother, it doesn't need much effort on the day. I cook mine to finish about 90 mins before I want to eat, take it out, wrap well in foil and tea towels and leave it, it stays warm. You could reheat it in gravy as pp said but I think that's more effort in terms of labour and space.

It's more about room in the oven!

If you're cooking a turkey anyway, and the crown is for leftovers, does it need to be reheated? Cook it on Christmas Eve and fridge it for leftovers on Boxing day. Turkey cooked Christmas day for Christmas Dinner.

If you need a whole turkey and turkey crown for a lunch for 3 on Christmas Day then pre roast the veg, then cook the turkey, then wrap the turkey in foil and blankets, then cook the crown, then finish off the veg while the crown is resting. If you are doing it for leftovers then cook it when you aren’t in the middle of cooking a Christmas dinner. If you have a whole turkey and 3 people you do not need to be warming slices of a spare turkey on Christmas Day. I sympathise with the need for leftovers. I’ve started cooking a chicken on Boxing Day for sandwiches after running out of turkey one year. There was about 15 at dinner though, not 3.

I could be wrong but I think OP is saying she has a lot of guests on Christmas Day so needs a whole large turkey and probably three portions from the crown for Christmas dinner.

Then three of the guests are staying for a few days so they will eat the leftover Turkey crown for sandwiches etc.

Yes I think she’s saying that, but I’m still not fully aligned on cooking the poor crown the day before, even the largest turkeys take about 4 hours, a crown a couple, you can easily do that on the day. So it’s yummy for everyone and some poor sods aren’t getting the day before turkey microwaved with gravy.

It’s the only way to do it in my house, we’re always out on Xmas morning.
Enough slices of Turkey and Gammon in gravy for Lunch in a covered dish ready to reheat, the rest wrapped in foil for cold cuts on Boxing day.

We love cold turkey in this house and will have it cold on Boxing Day with chips and then in a pie etc.Loads of sandwiches.This is at the request of family - it’s not being forced on them 😊 There’s not just 3 people/guests

I can’t cook it Boxing Day because I need it to feed 3 people for Christmas Dinner who can’t eat the other Turkey.

cook it Christmas day. This is why turkey gets a bad rap for being dry with all these people cooking the day ahead and reheating.

I didn’t really want to get into this, but it’s for religious/cultural reasons.

Have you had to source a halal turkey? I can't think what other religious reasons there would be so assume it's halal.

I think that makes you an outstanding host (I would probably have done them a nut roast!) so hope it all goes well with your early cooking.

I always do my roast potatoes on Xmas eve due to oven space issues. I'll probably do the stuffing tomorrow too.
Just leaves the chicken and veg for Xmas day.

Growing up my mum used to cook the turkey slowly over night. Smell in the morning was amazing. I don't do it now though, and definitely wouldn't for a crown they only take a couple of hours don't they?

I do reheat meat for myself through the year as its handy meal prep. Its ok but not as good as first roasted. And FGS dont microwave it, it makes everything rubbery.
oven or pan with gravy would be the best choice.
Is the crown boned and rolled? How big? Could you cut off half/third and roast that in a smaller tray, or in with the roast potatoes or something? Then cook the rest of it for cold later on.

For oven space I'd consider pre roasting veg, as it takes ages sometimes. Don't microwave it, but toss it back in a hot oven and they should be done in 10 minutes and I think the quality will last better than reheated meat. I sometimes batch cook a big mix of roast veg and reheat it as and when, sometimes freeze it too.

update: the ‘Crown’ was delivered and it was actually butterfly breast and massive!

I’ve separated the breasts so now have just one large breast to cook on the day. If we need more I will just cook the other on Boxing Day or freeze it for another visit.

So I’m sorted, it fits in the smaller oven and will come out to rest whilst I cook the veggie sausages and non duck fat roasties 😊
