Very very cheap and lovely gifts you've received and loved

Asking out of curiosity really, because some of my favorite gifts throughout the years have been very cheap and i wonder if it also applies to other people as well.

My best friend knitted a lovely scarf for me using letfover yarn and it turned out to be one of my favorite gifts ever. When i was around 18 a good friend gave me a dessert his mom had made for me as an Easter gift and i remember how delicious it was. One of my patients gave me a pair of very cheap earings that i really love and use very frequently because they go with almost all my clothes ans are so 'me'.

This was one I gave, but my DM loved it.
I had a very old, very small, black and white photo of her mother, her granny, and her elder sister, in about 1916 or 1917.
She really loved her DM and her GM, but had never got on with her elder sister!

So in the days before you could do these things on a computer, I got a photographer to blow it up as far as possible.

I then cut the sister out, and put the Dm and Gm into a lovely dark blue velvet frame with twin oval spaces.

I wasn’t there when she opened it, but my DF said he’d never seen her so pleased with anything.

My aunt used to buy me a box of Turkish delight. The proper one with icing sugar in the box. I loved it.

Also a personalized xmas decoration from my mum was one of my faves too.

A pack of 3 Ferraro Roche which ds1 bought for my birthday by himself with his own money when he was 12. A notebook from my niece that had a lovely Aunty message on it.
A candle that actually smelled of forests because I once told my friend how much I loved the smell of a forest I went to on a holiday abroad.
Books
A small box of amazing chocolates.
Home baked delicious cake

I had my first baby in July and a friend brought me a bag of useful bits and bobs like nipple cream, a 4+ month beaker, dummy clip, babys first toothbrush and teething powder. She said she knew everyone would buy clothes and toys for the baby so she wanted to get us some useful things that we will need in the coming months instead. Very thoughtful and I loved it!

@Oreservoir

My best friend always makes cards and they're always so apt.
I have been given some perfect second hand books by several people.
A decorated cake tin. Use it all the time.

Oh! Second hand books! I'd forgot about those! One of my favorite books came to me as a birthday present from a friend. It was used and old and had been from more than 2 people before she got it (also as a gift).

My grandmother makes the most delicious chutney and fruit cakes and she gifts them to us every year and they're always super appreciated and loved

A Lindor Milk Gold Can. I absolute adore tins, but couldn't justify the differente in price. Mentioned briefly to DM, who promptly bought me one and gifted me it last Christmas.

I was so, so happy when I saw what it was, DM actually said "hold on, it isn't what you think!" but IT WAS. I was far more thrilled with it than it was reasonable to be.

Very very cheap and lovely gifts you've received and loved

Literally all I want for Christmas is books, chocolate and bubble bath. None of them are very expensive!

@starsinyourpies a stocking just stuffed with books I wanted to read would be my idea of heaven!

What a lovely thread.

Just today I took delivery of a giant jar of picked onions from FIL. He does them every year and gives me the first (and biggest) jar because he makes them exactly as I like them. Pretty sure it costs him almost nothing but I appreciate them every year.

A few years ago I was teaching myself crochet and struggling with the hooks Id bought. My lovely friend bought me a set of hooks for less than £5 off eBay and sent them to me with a sweet note.

As a child my parents used to save and save to get us amazing gifts but 2 of my favourites were really cheap. One was a notebook that my Nan had handwritten her baking recipes in and she'd made a lovely front cover that said 'Top Secret - this book belongs to CrazyBaubles' (she'd been teaching me to bake but I was rubbish at remembering quantities while she did it all by eye so she must had spent some time actually measuring and taking notes while baking).
The other was matching dresses for dsis, me and our dolls. My dm was gifted fabric - she worked out the pattern and did the cutting, my dad did the sewing and dm then added embellishments. We loved them - they were red with tiny yellow flowers on Xmas Smile

Last year my OH got me a pattern set and fabric nd I choose the dress and he made it. All quite simple and under 10 pounds from hobby craft.

I would love a book stocking

@AmIAWeed such a kind gesture from your son, so thoughtful.
But really chuckling for some reason at Monty Don being so in demand that he’s too busy to send you a birthday message Grin is he the gardening fella in a cardigan with elbow patches?!

My daughter went on school trip when she was about 9. I gave her some spending money for sweets/gift shop tat. She came back with the most beautiful Christmas tree decoration and gave it to me.

Also, I remember my grandma knitting me the most amazing patchwork cardigan for me when I was little. Some of the patches were sparkly 😍. I love all things that sparkle.

One year when my mum knew I was feeling really down (had just lost my baby girl) she left me her cozy pyjamas when she travelled home again after Christmas. She died later that year. It’s nearly ten years ago, and they are getting a bit threadbare, but they are still my go to when I need a hug from my mum. They’re not pretty, and they don’t fit that welI, but I think if my house was on fire they are one of the things I’d try to save.

@TheChosenTwo That's the guy - but without wanting to sound like a gushing fan, hes a rockstar with elbow patches!!
As well as gardening, he's a writer and this year became a very proud Grandad. For me, I find him incredibly relaxing and have re-watched many of his series like Italian gardening when I'm feeling stressed

My best friend is generally amazing in the kitchen and made me a cake for one of my birthdays (we lived together and were poor students at the time). She recreated a lovely rainbow cake from Pinterest and placed soo much effort into it, it was delicious and literally looked like it could have been a bake off entry!

MIL bought me a mug that is now 16 years old, bone China and shipped it to NZ from the UK in one piece. It has inspirational women on it and is a thing of beauty and thought. MIL sadly no longer dancing her way through retirement. Every hot drink I have I think about her lovely ways, feminist ideals and the fact she was a disaster in the kitchen!

@AmIAWeed oh gush away, no judgement here, I think my friends mum has a crush on him Grin
I was just really tickled by his busy schedule not allowing for birthday messages to fans! I mean, I’m sure he is really busy, I don’t know why I found it so funny to be honest!

The joke in our family is the best present we've had from MIL is a £3 butter knife! It's been used more than any other present as we've never had one!
