what do you eat on boxing day?

after reading another thread i need to ask this question.

as far as i am concerned boxing day is cold turkey, gammon, cheese, crackers, nice crusty rolls, christmas cake etc etc etc

i was shocked to hear someone say they cook hot meals on boxing day!


so what's the deal in your house?

Depends how many are here and what time people are arriving and leaving.

Sometimes a buffet of cold turkey, butcher's pork pie, chesses etc. But if I have new arrivals on Boxing Day I often cook again - usually a ham in Coke, potatoes and salad and warm bread.

Bubble and squeak with fried eggs for lunch.

Dinner something light - soup and a turkey sandwich type of thing. And cheese - we never seem to get round to the cheeseboard on Christmas day so eat a cheese mountain on Boxing Day.

Bubble & squeak! Never had it until I met DP and we spent our first Boxing Day at his grandparent's house. His grandmother was a fantastic cook and had a huge dish of bubble & squeak on the table. My god it was delicious. I'd cooked it every year since but in a pan following a JO recipe. I've no idea how to do it in the oven any tips?

We have cold turkey and a bit of gravy with it. DS, who loves veg, doesn't like bubble & squeak despite my best efforts so he has cold turkey with mash, peas & gravy.

Growing up, DM always did a buffet. She laid it out on the dining room table and we would go in throughout the afternoon and evening and help ourselves. Always with leftover turkey and she would cook beef in the morning so it was cold for the buffet. And the usual stuff like sausage rolls and cocktail sausages. And always bowls of peanuts and Twiglets!

Yeah, I always cook boxing day or go to MILs. Boxing day should still feel special and like to have a nice evening meal.

A nice piece of salmon with light veg. Usually Turkey and chips day after.

If I'm cooking then I cook a big ham and serve it with leftover turkey, baked potatoes, a huge bowl of homemade coleslaw, pickles and salad. Maybe a big pork pie.

Mince pies, leftover Christmas pud, Christmas cake and clementines for dessert.

We usually go to PIL for essentially another Christmas dinner at lunchtime and a buffet in the evening, not sure if we're going for lunch this year, if we don't it'll be leftovers, ham for meat eaters, bread cheese, chutneys, Christmas cake etc essentially clearing out the fridge so we can get back to normal eating on the 27th.

For years now a friend and I who both live alone alternate Christmas/ Boxing Day visits so I suppose we tend to have two days of Christmas type meals, and a high tea of quiche and salad stuff. And wine. At first because we had both been used to family sized catering we supplied far too much, but we are getting better at whittling the quantity down!

When I ran a family, Boxing Day tended to be cold meats and bubble and squeak.

A big buffet laid out on the kitchen sides, with paper plates because technically it's my day off after doing Christmas dinner. We always have a trifle though, because it's a tradition started by my gran. Add yule log, christmas cake, biscuits and any other dessert they fancy, best day of the festive period as far as my dc are concerned

Cold turkey & other cold meat, stuffing, beans and proper chip pan chips with loads of bread and butter and my Dad's homemade pickled onions. All cooked by my dad in return for my Mum doing Xmas Day dinner.

Well as this thread seems to be related to a thread that I started I may as well add my contribution.
We eat a hot 3 course meal. But it is not a roast dinner as we usually eat a meal which is traditional to our family's culture (not British). Normally we have lots of family over.
We usually have a creole style Meze starter followed by a couple of traditional creole dishes and sides that people can choose from and then desserts of some description. The desserts are not creole as we usually buy a couple of ready made desserts and my mum will bake us traditional fruit cakes as her contribution to the meal.

Well we're veggie so there's no left overs as such. There's A LOT of left over chocolate and cake but obviously no turkey or whatever.

We usually have crepes for breakfast. Cheese, chutney, bread rolls, christmas cake etc for lunch and a naice pizza for dinner with a crumble and custard for afters.

We have all of the family together on Boxing Day at my aunties house (about 20 of us) all the left over veg is made into bubble and squeak, cold turkey/gammon/pork/sausage meat stuffing, homemade chips, pickles/chutneys and fried eggs for the vegetarians hands down best meal of the year

we have all the family on xmas day so I feel like I really don't enjoy my dinner .. too buys running after everyone else
so boxing day we basically rerun xmas dinner for hubby and I and its always much more delicious

We do a re-run of the Christmas dinner. For some reason, although it is all the same food, it is always tastier and much less stressful than it is on Christmas day!

Boxing day will be quite formal in our house this year. I am having 10 for xmas day then 15 for boxing day, including MIL ( think Hyacinth Bouquet from Keeping up Appearances) so posh food and best behaviour!!

Definitely not another proper hot meal!

Everyone helps themselves to breakfast from the fridge, bits are picked at throughout the day, & there's a late lunch/early tea buffet type meal consisting of bubble'n'squeak with any leftover veg, a platter of all the leftover meats (as meat-eating in-laws off home usually after BD tea), lots of onion bhajis, samosas etc as we're all a bit fed up with Trad Brit by then, & a couple of massive bowls of salad.

If the gannet:food ratio is looking dicey I supplement with lots of potato wedges & a few garlic breads to carb the buggers into submission.

Usually it's leftovers or buffet food however this year we are going out for a meal. I cater for 15 on Christmas Eve and 9 on Christmas Day. I have 2 DC plus DSS and work until 3 pm Christmas Eve and back day after Boxing Day. I love doing it all but honestly can't wait to not have to do it all on Boxing Day this year!
