When to worry about asthma

My dd2 has asthma, though very rarely does she actually suffer with it. She has been on ventilators twice, as a toddler (she is now 6) because when it comes on, it comes on bad. She only gets wheezy when she has a cold (no allergies).

Now, she hasnt really had an attack in about 2 years, so my memory is hazy. At what point do you worry and take them to a Dr or even to an A&E department?

Check her breaths per minute count every in breath.

what is the normal range?

And I should have said 20-30 is normal for breathing. I wouldn't worry too much if it is not significantly raised though (50+ I would say).

ledodgy · 27/11/2008 19:43

20-140 breaths per min. My ds was hospitalised when his was 60.

ledodgy · 27/11/2008 19:43

*20-40 I mean not 140!

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 27/11/2008 19:43

And yes - you either count each time she breathes in. Do not count ins and outs.

She is 41, so maybe she just has a cold then? Think she will be ok tonight.

Though, should i take her to the Dr tomorrow if it raises any? or only if it goes over 50?

I counted the "ins"

I think if you are worried about her (which you sound as if you are) then you should get her checked tomorrow.

As you have described her I don't think it is necessary to get emergency treatment tonight though.

Thank you all, and I know now what to look for in case she worsens xx

I think she needs to be seen (and I used to be an asthma nurse).

Have a look at Asthma UK for some good information.

Have just remembered the last 2 times she was similar to this, she needed steroids & antibiotics, so i think i will get her looked at tomorrow.

thanks for the link sidge, ill go look at it now (and bookmark it!)
