Feather Down Farm - last minute group split... Advice

Nicky1234 · 02/08/2011 17:37

A group of 5 families has booked early in the year to stay with feather down farm and were advised that we would all be together. Now 2 weeks before our stay we have been advised that in actual fact we are being split up because a group of 2 wants specific tents and so it makes that field too small for us.
Anyone been to one of these farms and do you think it will be a problem, we have 10 kids between us, 6 and under, so I am worried that they'll disturb other guests (rather than all being together they'll have to find each other). Also though there is a brook between the 2 fields so we're going to have to shepherd them about and it seems such a shame they cant just roam a little free (poor loves get no freedom). Selfishly the adults won't be able to hang out in the evenings either...
Im also really upset that we have to split up as seems unnecessary and unfair...
Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions to put my mind at ease.
Thanks

Oh bloody hell FvF :(

I really feel for you all. This has got totally out of control, but it seems by their own making. Extraordinary response.

MollieO · 09/08/2011 22:47

If it wasn't affecting real people then FDF's behaviour would be quite funny. I wonder what they will be saying to MNHQ bearing in mind they contacted MNHQ to offer the pathetic solution of a babysitter.

If I were the OP or one of the party I would be on the phone to Holiday Which and checking my legal position. I wouldn't expect just a refund of my holiday outlay, I would be expecting significant compensation for loss of enjoyment etc. Have a look here:

Getting compensation for holiday problems Your rights

Many of us look forward to our holiday all year. But, if you book a package holiday, who is responsible when things go wrong? And when can you get compensation?
Who?s responsible for providing the holiday you paid for?

You might book your holiday directly with a tour operator or through a travel agent. Usually travel agents act as middle-men between you and the tour operator (the company that actually organises your accommodation, flights and any other parts of your holiday, such as day-trips).

No matter how you book your holiday, your contract is with the holiday company that provides and organises your holiday. It is this company?s responsibility to provide the holiday that you ask for, and to sort out any problems you have. Before booking, make sure that you know who this is. Usually it will be obvious at the time of booking but if you?re unsure, ask.
Your right to get the holiday you were promised

Under the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992 (PTR) the holiday company is responsible for providing all parts of the holiday as agreed. This means you have a right to:

get the holiday that you booked or was described to you (for example, if you book a named five-star hotel in Goa for two weeks for specific dates, that?s what you should get),
get the holiday at the price you agreed,
expect that any details you are given about the holiday are factually correct and not misleading (for example in a holiday brochure or on a company website),
expect that your holiday accommodation and resort is clean and safe.

If your holiday is changed or cancelled before you leave

If any part of your holiday, such as your hotel, is changed significantly before you leave, or if your holiday is cancelled, then you have the right to:

a refund, without having to pay a cancellation fee,
accept an inferior quality holiday and get a refund for the difference in price, or
accept an equivalent or superior holiday, without having to pay extra.

You may also be entitled to compensation if you are left out-of-pocket, for example, if you?d already booked car rental that you now can't use, or for loss of enjoyment.

If changes are due to circumstances beyond your holiday company?s control (such as a natural disaster), then you won't usually be entitled to compensation. But if the holiday company knew of a problem but let you go anyway, you may be able to claim for stress or disappointment.

You have the same rights if the cost of your holiday increases significantly (say, more than 10%). However, once confirmed, the price of the holiday can only be increased if this is stated in the booking conditions and if it is due to:

an increase in transport costs, such as fuel,
an increase in fees and taxes for services, such as landing fees, or
variations in the exchange rate.

Also, the first 2% of any increase must be covered by the holiday company, and it must not pass on any price increase in the 30 days before you leave.
If your holiday is not as you expect when you get there

If your accommodation or resort is not as described to you, the law says that the holiday company must offer you a suitable alternative. If it really can't provide anything that is remotely close to what you had paid for, it should offer to fly you home.

You can claim compensation for:

?loss of bargain? (the difference in value between what you booked and what you got),
out-of-pocket expenses, and
loss of enjoyment, or inconvenience or disappointment.

If your holiday company goes bust

Your travel plans shouldn't be affected if your travel agent goes bust, as the money you paid would have gone to the tour operator organising your accommodation and flights. It?s a good idea to contact the tour operator to make sure that they have your contact details and that everything is in place.

If your tour operator goes bust you should be protected as, under the PTR all package holidays have to be bonded, so your money is protected.
If you can?t take your holiday

If you are unable to go on the holiday, for example due to illness or bereavement, you are not legally entitled to a refund. You may be able to claim back the cost of the holiday from your travel insurance.

You also have a right, under the PTR, to transfer your holiday to someone else such as a friend or family member. The holiday company is allowed to charge you a reasonable administration fee for this.

Oh Frazzle. Sad I have no words, I'm gutted for you.

funnypeculiar · 09/08/2011 22:52

This is it. Looks fab, I think... but not sure where it is! www.facebook.com/pages/Glottenham-Farm/130848480332467

feelingvfrazzled · 09/08/2011 22:53

Sadly I don't think nettletea can fit us in...

suzikettles · 09/08/2011 22:54

This is very bad. Clearly they think they re-let the tents so they're hanging you out to dry. Nice.

ClaireDeLoon · 09/08/2011 22:58

Have you paid in full? How long before the refund comes through? I can't believe a company can just cancel a holiday for 5 families like this.

I guess they just routinely overbook and do this often?

RollingInTheAisles · 09/08/2011 22:59

Are they giving you the choice of canceling or forcefully doing it?

VivaLeBeaver · 09/08/2011 23:00

Aibu to wonder if I can get a cheap last minute deal at fdf? Only kidding, wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. I've added them to nationwide, elc and dixons - companies I refuse to buy stuff off no matter what. Never mind boycotting nestle, boycott fdf.

This is the sort of story that that daily mail would run an article on.

funnypeculiar · 09/08/2011 23:01
Sad
AitchTwoOh · 09/08/2011 23:02

i presume this is a bit of last-minute brinksmanship on their part, offering to refund when they know that's the last thing you want (please note that they didn't offer this a fortnight ago) so that you capitulate.

this is really shit behaviour, featherdown farm people, and no one who has read this thread will forget it.

HerdOfTinyElephants · 09/08/2011 23:02

Wow. I am on their mailing list and had just been waiting until DD2 was big enough for me to feel happy about her round the wood-burning stove before booking, but it's safe to say that I will not be booking with them now.

NettleTea, could you keep us posted / PM me when you do get your own glamping project off the ground?

VivaLeBeaver · 09/08/2011 23:05

Maybe you could just turn up anyway and refuse to leave, stage a sit in. It's not like the tents have locked doors, just go in.

oranges · 09/08/2011 23:09

this is all getting a bit bonkers. a mumsnetter must knoe of a farmer with a field who can ererct some comfy tents with camp beds to accomodate you all. and featherdown farms is going down...

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/08/2011 23:14

Can I suggedt that anyone who has marketing emails sent to them from Featherdown Farms unsubscribes PDQ?

lisad123 · 09/08/2011 23:14

Can they legally do that!!! Terrible behaviour, what reason did they give?

AitchTwoOh · 09/08/2011 23:15

i've emailed canopy and stars a copy of this thread, would be interesting to see if they can help out. late in the day, i know, but...

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/08/2011 23:17

suggest.

obv.

GlaikitFizzog · 09/08/2011 23:23

Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock
What a disgrace! Bullying behaviour from Featherdown Farm, comply or we'll cancel the lot! Absolutley shocking.

AitchTwoOh · 09/08/2011 23:40

that's what i think as well, glaikit.

NettleTea · 10/08/2011 00:14

Hi, I wish we could help, I really do, but I only have 3 furnished tents available for a 4 day period between 22-26 August, although you would have the site to yourselves. I could probably fix up to get sleeping mats for the kids, and I have 2 friends who have offered me tents, so there is a chance that I could pitch those nearby, but not sure what to do about furnishings, as you would be expecting furnished accommodation with FDF. I do have a spare Icey-Tek tho!! and one double airbed. I also have the 2 tents which we are trying to get sorted for the 'retro tent' (it sadly suffered a terrible calamity in the storms on the wed before we were due to open, and again these might work out and could be pitched..... It just depends what level of luxury you are looking for! If you were happy to move into the 'MN camp' on the Friday, you could tag onto the MN camp....... Just thinking aloud really....
I have also just emailed Rebecca at Canopy and Stars and asked her if she has anything which might be OK for you - I suggested you might be near Dorset, as that is where you were due to go, but if you are open to other areas I am sure they might be able to find you something - please email her. You can PM me for her direct email f you like, or if you think I might be able to help. I cant believe that they would do this to you - 20 people/5 tents as opposed to trying to get 2 tents to move - its just unbelievable. Im so sorry.

NettleTea · 10/08/2011 00:16

We are in East Sussex btw. About 4 miles outside of Battle, and about 7 miles from the coast.

sockpoppet · 10/08/2011 06:39

I will never book a holiday with feather down farms and will do my best to talk my friends out of it too. Fuckers.

AlmaMartyr · 10/08/2011 07:33

Wow, that is spectacularly bad Shock I've been doing a lot of searching of Devon campsites recently, some of which had yurts and stuff. Will see if I can find any of them again.
