Where's the dodgy sexual connotation with the name Lola?

Report
lottiejenkins · 17/03/2010 09:38

Lola was a Transexual/Transvestite in The Kinks song!!

My cat is called Lola. As far as I'm concerned any other Lola would play second fiddle

Lola Kate is a lovely combination. If you and dh are happy with it that's all that matters. I cannot understand why this name is so divisive, you could probably put some kind of dodgy connotation to most names.

A work of fiction and a couple of old dodgy songs can cause this much dislike in a name?!

As for the high court judge test, the first and only woman in the Supreme Court is called Brenda. Now that's not exactly the most serious of names is it?

sorry, got a bit carried away there. I considered Lola in the height of my pregnancy hormone induced madness when I had DC1. I am so glad I did not choose it.
I always test the name by asking myself, is this a name you would like to have? Would you feel happy and proud or silly and embarrassed? Does it convey who you are.. etc etc

I think Lola is cute and spunky sassy and cool

but I do not think the connotations are positive at all. Not only the kinks transvestite/ the showgirl but the Vladimir Nabokov Lolita associations which will flash across everyone's mind when they hear the name of your child. Not a positive thing!

Stripper who does extras

Sorry that is the image I have.

Although I cannot be sure of the ages of the posters on here, I do wonder if it is a generational thing (I am still in my 20s) as Lola just does not say anything sexual and stripperish to me.

Or maybe I am just an uneducated twunt because I haven't read "Lolita".

Feel quite sad now that people might be judging my dd's name in such a vile way, don't know how you would feel about that OP.

Patsy I'm in my 20s and I like the name. I very nearly named my DD it as I do think it's pretty and fun.
Please don't be offended by my post, eI tend to speak more critically and much more frankly here than in RL and it's easy to get upset

What I would say is that I'm sure a. I am in a minority anyway, look at madonna's daughter, look at charlie&lola kids tv show b. in 10 years time the connotations will not be the same as they are now. Those that made me doubt the name myself were all in their 40s/50s when I was choosing DDs name. Nobody will be actively thinking that when they think of your daughter, unless they sat down and studied the name.

Nobody does that! I could put myself off any name if I tried. I rather liked my own name until someone said 'that sounds like..' or 'I dont like that it reminds me of'

I liked the name aurelia until I thought of areola... aurelie- orally

I liked the name Aurelius until I remembered methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus, ie MRSA

I liked Theodore/Teddy til I remembered serial killer Ted Bundy

But we only do these things when considering names for our own children. I don't think Areola when I meet someone called Aurelia, I think oh that's a beautiful name!

I have known many 'Lolas' of all ages. The oldest is now in her 70s and the youngest is a toddler.

I quite like the Kinks song but I hope that most people would get the gist that it is a song about a bloke that dresses as a woman - and purely fictional at that - and not have the belief that it will affect a childs concept of their gender or give them a propensity to cross dress.

I read Lolita - but did not think that anyone named Lola would suddenly become a sexually presumptuous teen with their eyes on potential sugar daddy old lodgers.

I do not expect any one named Lola to have a part time job in a revue bar and to be prancing around half naked in sequins and feathers - but if they choose to, that is their choice. I bet if I was to go to the Folies Begere, not one of them would be called Lola.

A name should be chosen purely because the parents like it - not because it may or may not be fashionable in a few years time etc etc. There are going to be people who will love or hate the name you choose - so choose it because you love it.

I like Lola Jane, for what it's worth.

Crumpette - You didn't offend me, just a little bit at some people's reactions to the name! Just having a grumpy five minutes

I still love the name even if others don't!

I have a Lola Grace. She was born about 6 weeks before Charlie & Lola started on TV (phew) .

We love it because it's a bit showbiz and sassy, but it's also not too out there.

In terms of the 'high court judge' test, this lady is pretty serious. I also think that in the future the 'high court judge' test won't really apply, there is such a variety of different names around now that it won't apply. More interesting than my generation who are all Claires, Sarahs, Katies and Emmas.

I also think that it was a bit popular many years ago - e.g. Lola Montez, Jeffrey Archer's mother was also a Lola.

Madonna's daughter Lourdes is also shortened to Lola.

I'm not sure about the High Court judge test with girls names. I do think that given that there have been very few female High Court judges, it's more a case of we're just not used to them rather than it wouldn't work. Think Cherie. Probably not one you would have thought of as working for a judge a few years back, but it works for some.

well i really hope any daughter i have isn't a high court judge anyway....sounds hideously boring...BUT if i did want her to be a judge OBVIOUSLY i would call her JUDY....derr....

I am {and DH too more suprisingly} seriously not put off by any of the negative comments and think Lola is a very pretty, ageless name and i LOVE it....

Lola Grace is lovely angelene

lol at Judge Judy

I think it's a fair point that a lot of the names we consider a bit too silly/girly to be taken seriously won't matter for the next generation, after all they will have grown up with plenty of kids in their class called Daisy/Maisie/Tilly/Lola etc etc so will just think of them as normal names.

We also have a Lola Grace.
Had the name long before it was on tv.

Really like the name Grace but didn't want it as first name in case she wasn't Grace-ful iyswim as my Mum nearly named me Grace and I'm super clumsy and ungraceful..

I am currently 7 weeks pregnant
We fell pregnant immediately which is great.
We followed the 'shettles' method to hopefuly fall with a girl.............her name will be lola madeline joyce.
My dad has made all the kinks comments and showgirl remarks and i'm afraid it has fallen on deaf ears!
I love the name lola and am hoping DR shettles method has made us a girl !!

It is a bit faddish but then what isn't nowadays! I agree with angelene re our generation is all Sarahs, claires, lisas, emmas etc and when they are older they will all be the norm. As for the name being a bit sexy, ibknow what op's mean but I think it's only coz I have heard people say that before. If u like it, go for it! I have a Charlie so obviously I couldn't have gone for it with dd lol! X

Ignore everybody on here its a great name. Much prefer it to Dolores, Carlotta or Paloma just some of the ridiculous suggestions people have made. Chose the name you like and don't worry what everyone else thinks xxxx

aw thanks clps.....i must agree that naming my first two was made so much easier by the absence of MN babynames as i hadn't heard of it.....i don't really care what people think and when i have mentioned my name suggestions to my RL friends they have all loved Lola and said things like 'thank god she won't be another isabella/Amelia/Ruby all of which are in abundance in our area....

of course this will most likely be a boy now after all this....

Well boodle I have a baby Lola and in RL everyone has been very complimentary about her name! Have to say I'm not at all bothered by the stripper thing - it's complete rubbish.

It says Kinks to me too-
thing is, it's not just incidentally mentioned in the song, it's the title and most of the chorus too, don't do it!
and, I do think it fails the high court judge test also!
