What do you think of Sunny?

What do you think of Sunny as a boy's name? I love it and we're thinking of using it, but not sure whether to spell it "Sunny" or "Sonny", I like it with a 'U' but hubby thinks it's too feminine and should be spelt with a 'O'; opinions please??? :D

Sonny makes me think of the brand "Sony". I would choose a name like Alexander or Jason and use Sonny as a nickname

I really don't like it, because to me it's a name that only a father uses to his son - "Come here son/sonny." A bit like naming someone "Dad" or "Gramps". plus I generally don't like the kind of men that call their child 'son' instead of their proper name

Sonny and Teddy sound very American, like Sandy...in my mind, someone preppy and scrubbed and squeaky clean with a radiant toothy smile and a dark secret

NotGoodNotBad, calling your child 'son' is a cultural thing. All the people (male and female) in my dh's family call their sons 'son' and they are mostly lovely, lovely people.

Lots of people will think its stupid because its a term of endearment in many places. So it's like calling your child Love, Pet , Ducks, Darling etc

So it might be cool if your dad is a rock star and you will spend your life with cool meeja types and set up your own fashion label.

I think it's utterly ridiculous. You are naming a person, not a pet.

Careful SoupDragon I was set upon when I said it was a stupid name

'Set upon'? Hmm

One person, singular, took you to task. That's hardly being 'set upon' is it?

Good grief.

I don't care, sonlypuppyfat. It's what I think and I am of the opinion that if you don't want opinions, don't ask for them.

I find it rather proprietorial.

I rather like it - if I met a child called Sonny I wouldn't think it was anything out of the ordinary. I would spell it Sonny also.

I know two very nice boys named Sonny and like the name because of that.Sunny isn't a name for a person imho.

How on earth can Sunny be awful and Sonny lovely? Thy both sound exactly the same. There is slightly more justification for Sunny in a hippyish sort of way I suppose.

I just don't think either spelling sounds like a proper name, or even a nickname.

It looks more like a term of endearment than an actual name.

But if you're set on it, I think that Sunny looks very girly. And it's hard to imagine someone calling a girl Sonny in any context, so Sonny would be better for a boy. But still silly.

Lovely, Sonny for a boy and Sunny for a girl, it was the name we were going to use but sadly wasnt meant to be, still love it though.

curlew · 05/09/2013 11:19

But why?

Why is Sonny a name? Where did it come from? Why does anyone think for a moment that an adult man wants to be called Sonny? That he wants cheeky work experience kids in the office calling him Sonny? Or his middle aged secretary when he's a nervous young solicitor in his first job?

I agree with Curlew about Sunny having a hippyish aspect. I think it could be a reasonable girl's name along the lines of Poppy or Summer or Journey, etc. But Sonny is in the same category as Buddy for me - more of a label than a name.

With an O for a boy, U for a girl. I like them both.

PLEASE will somebody tell me why Sonny is a name?

And please will someone, maybe the same person, explain why it wouldn't be an embarrassing name for an adult man? Why they think there would be no issues at all for a man trying to be authoritative? Imagine being a young manager with a team of middle aged women workers..........

curlew, I'm pretty sure if you read through this you'll find enough reasons for Sonny to be a name. My grandfather in law was called Sonny, he was a very well known and respect man, oh and he was a doctor.
Names don't define what you're able to achieve and imo you're have to be very small minded to believe it does.
My boss is called Rainbow, she's a very smart and hard working lady. She also loves having a name which is 'out there' and different.
I would hope that in whatever stage of life my son is in that even if he was called something stupid like Gremlin he wouldn't be bullied or looked down upon because of it. What someone is called is not their choice it was that of their parents, if someone uses anothers name again then all is shows is that the person doing it wasn't raised to treat others with respect.
Thankyou everyone else we've decided to go with Sonny rather then Sunny, much to my hubbys delight :)

Cassie couldn't of put it better myself. I had my DS yesterday and we have named him Sonny, the name generally isn't well received on here. I have posted twice asking for opinions.
We like it because it sounds happy and cheerful, evokes feeling of my boy being a cheeky charming chap, a quality that I love in any man.
Just hope it's not getting too popular... X

I hope for your son's sake that is true. It wasn't for me, it was hell. It didn't matter that it wasn't my choice.

Cassie- I would put money on your grandfather in law being nicknamed Sonny.

And yes you're right. It shouldn't matter whether you're called John, Dwayne or Cumulus- but it does.
