We know twins called Dilly and Blue (as in Lavenders blue, dilly dilly) In case you were wondering, Dilly is a girl, Blue is a boy.

Rhiannon · 04/02/2002 13:55

I read a birth announcement in an NCT magazine a year or two back for a Huckleberry. Poor sod! R

Lobe · 04/02/2002 14:40

I saw one in a magazine - this woman had called her son: Jackdaniels. Aaargh! We liked Rupert for our son, but unfortunately our surname is Behrens and he would have sounded as Rupert BEARens!

Lill · 04/02/2002 14:53

helena christenson was on so G norton show this week - her little boy is called Mingus and I think his surname is Ringus! Dont quote me on this though as it was late at night and I had been with my friend Signor Bardolino all evening!

JoAnne427 · 04/02/2002 16:15

I just heard that my brother's former girlfriend (they stay in touch) is pregnant with her first child - and as we all were quite close for years, I sent her an e:mail congratulating her - she sent me back pictures of the ultrasound, and the baby shower, and said the baby's name (girl) is going to be Medea...

As in Euripedes "Medea" - who revenges her husband's betrayel by killing their children and poisoning his soon to be new bride! Yikes! What is wrong with some folks? I asked my brother if she knew this, and he rolled his eyes and said "of course. You know Inga!" Well, I guess I didn't, because I am totally appalled! Why, oh why?

dm2 · 04/02/2002 16:27

Lill - I saw g norton too - yup the baby's name is Mingus Lucien Regis, but it's okay because Helena says 'You look at him and he looks like a Mingus'.

MandyD · 04/02/2002 16:56

When I was at primary school there was a Juan prononced Joo-an there too!

I chose Charlie as a boy's name because some neighbours years ago had a little boy. I saw him when he was first born and Charlie sounded such a brilliant name for a baby. A friend who's familiar with the slang names for drugs said that anyone called Charlie should have a brother or sister called Billy/Billie too!!

jsmummy · 04/02/2002 17:09

Mingus! So close to Minger. Let's hope that word is out of current useage by the time he's older...

callie · 04/02/2002 21:10

EEKK! Mingus is the worst name I have ever heard.
Mingus the minging minger.

Marina · 05/02/2002 09:45

Mingus can always do what Zowie Bowie did before him and change his name to Alex or Pete when he gets older, I suppose...
Bloss, I love Tobias, but if you are relying on it being pronounced a specific way, you might be letting yourselves in for some frustrating times ahead. Let us know what you decide in the end.

Selja · 05/02/2002 10:21

Our son is called Ciaran and people can't pronounce it or spell it. It gets a bit tiresome but then we decided on that name so we'll just have to put up with it. As long as you're prepared for the mispronounciation and shortening go with it.

scooter · 05/02/2002 10:21

I genuinely know of an Agamemnon Elvis. I think the surname is Crump. I hesitated to write this as it sounds like a wind-up, but I swear it's true. Also Tiger Mae!! (Possibly celebrity influenced maybe?)

janh · 05/02/2002 15:17

There was a girl at my school called Flavia Crum. I thought perhaps I'd dreamed it but she has showed up on Friends Reunited! (She had a brother called Marmaduke.)
And my neighbour, who grew up in Australia, know a girl called Psyche - pronounced "Pish".

tusky · 05/02/2002 18:06

my husband's cousin has a girl named Cursty - eeuw ! guess what she'll get called ! They're up in Nottinghamshire,so maybe it's an East Midlands style of spelling Kirsty ?

honeybunny · 05/02/2002 18:48

My dh spent many a month working on an obstetric ward, and came across some very bizarre names,
Lanesra-because M+D were huge Arsenal football supporters(sorry if thats not quite the right sp, but basically Arsenal backwards)
Melaena-very smelly, black with blood, poo! in medical terms but someone thought it was nice for a girl! Obviously didn't know what it meant!
Likewise, I can never understand why anyone would want to call their daughter after a very itchy, unpleasant fungal infection-Candida!
and Zippee for a boy, maybe parents were Rainbow fans, poor kid!
There were plenty of others, too many to mention, but we are talking Camberwell here, so hardly surprising. Sorry to any Camberwellian Mums out there, but you know what I mean!! (nb I was a Camberwellian mum too before I left the old smoke for the country, BTW!)

dm2 · 05/02/2002 18:51

Tusky - LOL I misread Cursty as Crusty, images from The Simpsons came to mind.

Rhiannon · 05/02/2002 20:37

I'm sure I've mention Carey Hunt before, she's abotu 33 now and hopefully married. R

Lizzer · 05/02/2002 22:39

Yeah, I've also written these on here before but they still make me laugh now. My friend used to teach a Scarlett Balls! A Jenna Taylor! A Lacey Nicholls and her sister Christy!

mollipops · 06/02/2002 07:02

I had a customer by the name of Stanka Arsov once - I tell you no lie!

We had no problems with a boy's name - dh suggested Matthew out of the blue and that was it. Nice and simple, we knew no-one of that name and it was a Saint's name, so it would keep dh's mum happy (not that that was a real consideration!). We didn't mind Matt as a short version and it "went" with dh's surname. We could even imagine Bill McLaren shouting his name as he scored the winning try against England!

We couldn't come up with a girl's name that we both agreed on - we had a sort of short list but had decided if it was a girl then we'd decide what she "looked like".

Fortunately we had a boy!

We did think of giving him my surname (which I've kept and is wierd old German) as a middle name, but decided instead to keep it simple with Alexander.

mollipops · 18/06/2002 04:40

Have come across lots of unusual names lately (I love reading birth notices!) and have kept a list to share, hope you find it as interesting as I do!

Accacia, Blayn, Brodin, Bryn, Caden, Callan, Cerecia, Challis, Cleon, Dallas, Dallin, Deakin, Dior, Eleri, Elisha, Godwin, Ibraham, Isla-Louise, Jag, Jaice, Jalique, Jhai, Jye, Kaija, Kaelan, Kiri, Kye, Levi, Mali, Matrix (I kid you not!), Mecaela, Monte, Montanna, Odine, Roark, Savannah, Saxon, Seryce, Tammina, Sheye, Teela, Tira, Tiarna, Tyra, Tyrrell, Zahli, Zedd.

angharad · 18/06/2002 09:31

Bryn and Eleri are solid Welsh names! One of my sisters is Eleri (pronounced Eh-lair-ee to rhyme with scary). DS1 has a little girl called Tamika in his nursery group, her mum said it means "born on Monday" in Hausa (African language) but that the little girl was born on a Thursday and they just liked the name.
It makes me laugh how fashions for names change, a guy at work has a toddler called Keith and it seems really inappropriate for a liitle boy. Have worked with a 5 year old NOrman Braithwaite in the past which seemed even odder-the name sounds like it could only belong to an 80 y.o. (Apologies to the parents of any Normans or Keiths out there!)

ariel · 18/06/2002 10:37

I called my newest arrival Jaden, i wanted a slightly unusual name but not. to strange, i came across his name in a baby mag ,id never heard it before, and i get alot of comments on how unusual it is.Apparently its from America and quite popular there

Rhiannon · 18/06/2002 10:51

Hasn't Will Smith got a Jaden? R
