I haven't seen the film footage as I can't face it. FYI I don't eat meat (for animal welfare reasons) but this isn't designed to convert others or to spark yet another veggie vs meat-eater debate.

Its to ask whether any decent human being would think these practices reasonable or acceptable and to pray to goodness that those who don't will forward the link to their MPs/press contacts/whoever in order to obtain tighter legislation and closer surveillance on what goes on in our slaughterhouses.

This is surely so wrong... or AIBU?

It's a bloody troll Rhubarb, best taken with a pinch of salt.

I know, riven, and I don't even eat meat. I just always wanted to say that.

Rhubarb I think you should make curry sausages.

This is what Mum used to cook when we had "animal" sausages, i.e. what was left of the critters (beef, lamb, pork and chicken), after all the good meat had been removed from the carcass, the bones given to the dogs and the skins used for whatever. Grind stuff up and add enough curry powder and it really doesn't matter what it is .

We are having satay lamb.

How do you know I'm having sausages for tea Morloth?? Honestly sometimes I think I must talk aloud or something.

I was going to do bangers and mash but have discovered a chronic onion shortage, so it'll have to be pasta.

Unless I go and tear an onion from its cosy burrow, peel its skin off and then chop it into pieces.

I am psychic.

Actually, you mentioned upthread you had gotten sausages out of the freezer. Onion shortages are a PITA. I have just noted a lack of curry powder, which could make the satay tricky. Mongolian lamb instead it would seem.

I wish I was married to you, Morloth, you sound so.....capable.

sigh

No you don't Arizona DH gained about 15kgs after we got married. I still cook like I am feeding 10 people who have been working on a farm all day. Instead of 2 banker types and a little kid.

We have curry sausages, so what is this curried sausage recipe of which you speak so highly?

Report
Rhubarb · 17/11/2009 17:20

I meant, we have curry spices

OK, I have never written it down before (and bear in mind this is the sort of recipe that may be an acquired childhood taste ):

Heat some oil in a in big pan (wok is better) add sausages, cook until brown (burny bits are OK), throw in chopped onion. Cook until onion is softish, add garlic. Add curry powder/spices and cook off a little.

Hopefully there is a bit of oil in the pan (depends on sausages really), if not add a tablespoon or so of oil, add a tablespoon of flour. Cook until it kind of looks like a gloopy roux type thing. Good splash of soy and some water to smooth it out and then a shedload of veg - preference is frozen peas, corn and carrots, but anything you have in the freezer/fridge will probably go alright, half a handful of raisins/currants will add a bit of sweetness.

The dodgier the sausages the more curry sauce required.

Is cheap and yum. Mum always served with rice but as I watch carbs I tend to use quinoa, good with either.

Sorry, stock will add more taste than water and I sometimes add a stock cube. Also cook it until the sausages are cooked through - speed this up by cutting them into bits after brown them - I learned the lesson the hard way that if you cut them while they are raw you get curried mince instead - still tasted OK.

Is it only me giggling at how a thread about animal cruelty and inhumane slaughter houses has ended up including a recipe for sausage curry?

Report
Morloth · 17/11/2009 17:44

Well you could use vegetarian sausages. Depends on how they hold up to being in a stewy type situation.

Report
Nancy66 · 17/11/2009 17:45

they taste of cardboard and sawdust - they don't hold up in any situation.

Seems I got here after the intelligent people left eh? Anyway....this footage is not an isolated example of what has occasionally happened at one or two slaughterhouses. There have numerous exposes of similar activity across the UK. I don't doubt that there are a small number of 'compassionate' farms but the vast majority of UK produced meat will have come from places like those in the footage. Sadly I agree that most people either delude themselves or just don't give a fuck. The most unpleasant ones ridicule veggies/vegans and joke about the slaughter of animals.

Hear, hear, missy8c. I was shocked to read this thread and find so many flippant comments having just viewed the horrific footage.

And your 'compassionate' statement is based on the following facts.....????? Do elaborate if you will.
