AIBU?

Surely I'm not?

SWALK · 26/09/2009 15:03

DD (17) has recently got a new boyfriend, which is fine. However, his name is Chris, which is a name I hate, and would rather not have to say a lot, especially if he is going to come to the house all the time. I told DD last night that if she wanted to bring him round, then I would be calling him Luke, which I think is an acceptable name (and very nice - it was going to be DD's name, had she been a boy). Very unreasonably, I thought, she flew off the handle at this, even though I know that she likes the name Luke.
Now I have three options:

  1. Call the boy Luke when he is at the house
  2. Call him "Mr " when he is here
  3. Don't let him come to the house.

He is a lovely boy, but I just can't stand him name!
So, is it unreasonable?

OP I'm rather glad to hear there's nothing wrong with your mental health, would be a great insult to those of us who there is.

Also, please face facts - if your daughter is 17, she is probably getting laid, rather a lot.

scottish at name change suggestion.

Ph perleeeese SWALK It's gone on too far now...

Your post is ODD, your dislike of the name of the (poor) guy who's dating your 17yo daughter, is ODD, posting it in AIBU's always a potentially tricky move... Got my first ever one in today and thankfully didn't feel the need to retreat behind the sofa, but your post is BIZARRE, beyond weird, you are obviously opening yourself up for some stick.

Selecting another name for the poor guy cos his name sounds liek biting an apple? Calling him Luke? it rhymes with Puke.. So what't your point at all? At least Consider having the good grace to call him Christopher and just suck it up.

Otherwise, FGS please post his email and we'll all collectively email him and tell him to dump your daughter, then problem solved! God help your poor SIL who ever that may turn out to be....

"I would never have called my children that name, because it sounds like somebody biting an apple, as I said. I do eat apples, but only cut into slices. I don't eat crisps because I find the texture is too rough, and scratches my tongue. "

Brilliant, OP. (I can't call you Swalk -- sounds too much like the automatic doors opening on Star Trek.)

Groundhogs has it right. Your DD knows you hate the name so much you can't say it. His name is not really Chris at all - your DD is pretending it is because SHE DOESN'T WANT YOU TO SAY ANYTHING TO HIM AT ALL.

Can't think why...

Lol thredworm at star trek doors!

So, Swalk, if that is your real name, you may not call your children Chris, but, He Is Not Your Child! He is a young man who deserves some respect, as he is, as you imagine, leaving your daughter's chastity intact.

Call him by his surname with ey at the end, like on another thread active ATM.

Silly mare.

Is anyone thinking that SWALK's DD will probably end up marrying Chris and within a decade she (SWALK's DD) will have an AIBU thread about her mother refusing to use Chris jnr's name. Or is that just evil wishful thinking on my part.

I think if he agrees to being called Luke, OP should agree to being Obe Wan Kanobi. Or perhaps Darth Vader, only that would be too surreal, albeit more appropriate in terms of temperament!
