We hired a new woman less than 1 month ago at work. She is still in early training and doing well (but not really doing much work other than inputs having to be checked and supervised due to quite a bit of training being needed to be autonomous in the role). Today I get an email advising of her pregnancy. We don't have a HR dept and I know the higher management will not be happy with this. She just started, we don't even know if she will work out long term (as i said she is doing well in training but it's very early to tell) and now before she is here a full year she will be leaving on maternity leave. The thing is I really want to support her as im a mum myself and struggled with outdated maternity practices and even a bit of corporate sexism. But deep down I feel angry as I'm fairly sure she was already pregnant when she got the job and didn't disclose (which again I know she doesn't have to, and the way im feeling is exactly why she shouldn't!)... but this will mean i now have to look for someone else and train someone else to cover her, which will be really hard on the team and she is not even half-way into the training herself. I feel so conflicted and im a hypocrite because in theory I think something completely different to what im feeling right now. I also believe the higher management will want t terminate her employment, can they do that? I truly wouldn't like that to be the case
