Drug use- what do you find acceptable?

There is a thread that has touched on this already. What is acceptable drug use in your eyes? Is it OK to smoke a little weed when the children are in bed, or take cocaine on weekends or holidays, or is it totally irresponsible to even entertain the idea of drug taking if you are a parent (or if you are planning to be)?

Darryl - cannabis may not kill on its own but it can certainly ruin relationships, careers, friendships.

It is also addictive. I give not a flying fuck what all those "experts" say about how it is not. It fucking is, my partner and many many others are proof of that.

(although thankfully dp is now getting help for this and other issues. )

If the question was if you had to leave you kids with someone happily intoxicated with a either alcohol, ecstacy, hash, heroin or cocaine which would you choose?

without a shadow of doubt it would be Hash.

(though I wouldn't with any in reality)

noonki....certain types of cannabis(illegal drugs), do trigger panic attacks, this is why you need to research it first...specially if youre going to take for medicinal purposes!and believe me its well worth the effort.....

riven..round here you can
and you would probably be surprised at some of the people looking for it

Really Noonki? Perhaps i should post a nice long list of my partners increasingly irrational behaviours that he was displaying whilst stoned.

It makes really fun reading.

Partner is also an (recovering) alchoholic. V early days but he is doing well. If we ever saw the sort of behaviour he used to display after smoking again i would leave immediately.

No drug use is acceptable in my opinion. Or alchohol for that matter if you are unable to moderate yourself.

IMO if it's illegal it's a no no .. I do however agree with the idea of prescibed cannabis.. I think they could actually help a lot more people than just using other medicines.. but it would need to be on script and regulated.

see I'm such a stick in the med.. but there you go.

idrank - that's why I included 'happily' (hence no morose drunks or paranoid stoners)

I've never been in this position since I had DD but I have taken recreational drugs in the past and I do drink.
I think I'd be OK with very occasional light recreational use but that's about it.

Idrankthechristmasspirits...i am not saying that, at all! you seem to forget that drugs illegal or not have the purpose of masking reality in its own right and you say its the cannabis that ruins relationships..ect, well i dont think so,... its the person within and their problems and such that do that.. i know from personal experience, these underlying issues need to be confronted and realised, before anyone can move forward in their lives..ect! i have suffered from severe depression for many years, been on numerous pharmacutrical drugs to which most have no effect for the condition to which they where prescribed..but gladly give you a list of a hundred or so side effects...lol..hmm! but they sure are a real money spinner! anyway thats besides the point!! really...and addictive personallities are another issue, i dont mean smoke it 24/7 thats just plain silly and will lead to problems especially if those underlying problems are still pecking away at you inside......sorry if its hit a nerve but thats how it is...you cant blame just the cannabis for that!! I KNOW!

I dont think any drug use is acceptable personally. Most of my friend think there's no harm in a few lines of coke on friday night

Somewhere between the source and your nose it is very likely that people were deliberately injured or died, or that the money goes back into child prostitution and crime. Even if you dont personally see any ill effects, that's a pretty high price to pay IMO

I would'nt touch any recreational drug, wine is hard enough for me. My reasons are (no.1 by far) I don't want to leave my children motherless and I don't want to be addicted.

yes i totally agree with you on that score and thats why i dont aquire it from the streets/dealers..which poses another great debate...SHOULD CANNABIS BE LEGALISED??? personally i am for it and have my views and opinions on why! would be good to here some opinions here.....

hate the term "recreational drug use" it sanitises and minimises a toxic and catastrophic activity.how the middle classes salve their conscience convinced that the blow they are sold is nearly organically sourced fair trade.give it a twee description

such a mixed metaphor.sweaty,lycra bods,bad ass beats and a bit o' blaw?think not

The number of people who suffer and die in the production and distribution of illegal drugs is at least partly down to the prohibition of these drugs. Prohibition of alcohol in America was one of the most disastrous laws ever passed: this is one of the reasons why their drug problems are much worse than in the UK. Because the majority of people wanted to drink alcohol despite it's being illegal, criminals were able to build a massive infrastructure supplying itm and when alcohol became legal again, they simply moved on to the still-illegal intoxicants.

Oh, and any biologist with half a brain would be able to tell you that a desire for intoxicants of some kind now and again is quite common in mammals, and any anthropologist would be able to tell you that just about every human society ever discovered has had some form of intoxicant frequently used. (I have heard that about the only ones who don't are Eskimos because they haven't got any plants with intoxicating properties, but this may be an urban myth). Do those of you who don't use alcohol, nicotine or illegal intoxicants back away crossing yourselves from caffeine, or chocolate as well?

Solidgold - that is really interesting. Other than cats (cat nip & valerian) I didn't know of any other mammmals who indulge in intoxicants. Can you give any other examples?

Riven - I've only seen the analgesic powers of weed during a particularly nasty bout of cystitis. Peeing blood, incredible pain, the works.

A friend took pity on me and brought a joint. The relief was instantaneous and complete. Even the urgency (need to pee every ten seconds) was gone. Really quite unbelievable.

Just a drag or two was enough. You don't need to be stoned to benefit from the analgesic effects. Maybe you should give it a try.

Have a look at the reviews of this .
Ok some of the reveiwers appear to be of the woo-and-bollocks-school-of-mentalism, but I have read one or two other things about animals deliberately selecting plants etc that have functions other than nutrition.

"I don't want to leave my children motherless and I don't want to be addicted."

Suit yourself. But the vast majority of recreational drugs are not deadly, nor are they physically addictive.

Heroin and crack cocaine are addictive, and they can also kill.

Some people seem to manage getting addicted to cocaine, but tens of thousands of others use it on occasion and aren't addicted at all.

As for the rest... I can't think of another mainstream recreational drug that is physically addictive or particularly deadly.

In answer to the OP,

My drug tolerence is now Zero on anything illegal and cigarettes, alcahol i will have 1 maybe 2 drinks and that is all.

IMP i don't think its right to have kids wether your with them or ot and indulge in drigs (including fags) this is just my opinion though i know its not a very popular one!

I say this becuase from the age of 14 through to 16 i was constantly high/stoned/snowed out my tree/pissed or worse. I have seen nice people turn into monsters and i have seen a good froend and grown man become incontinent, unable to talk and shakey due to an overuse of drugs.

My best friend tried to drown me in a pond under the influence of Coke when she was normaly a very timid, nice girl.

I have a bad jaw from years of gurning whilst on class a drugs.

I can't remeber somethings i have done and it scares me sometimes.

As for fags, i am an ex smoker but im not preachy if you had watched several relatives kill themselves through smoking, held your own morthers hand as she undergoes her 3rd open heart surgey due to smoking, and you now had a son with a severe respitory condition, you might feel the same.

As for drink driving or getting so pissed you act like a twat with no dignaty whatsoever, thats fine, i don't do it because i have some self respect and like to be in control of my body, as for complete cunts that drink drive, they should be locked away with the key destroyed in front of them, drinkdriving killed my best mate as a teenager.. so sorry its a touchy subject.

Take what you want, drink what you want, leave the kids with someone else though.

Personally I would never drink or smoke weed (I don't smoke weed btw) if dd was in the house alone with me. God forbid, but if something was to happen to her and my reactions were that little bit slower because of a joint or a glass of wine, I'd hate myself.

As a young student at college I'll admit I tried a few things, nothing that ever turned into a habbit though. Like most, I experimented and left it at that.

I like the occassional glass of wine, but only when I know there is someone else who hasn't been drinking around for dd. I have a night out this Saturday and have arranged a babysitter for dd, that way if there was a problem during the night, even after I'm home, there is a sober person to look after her.

From personal experience, drinking causes a hell of a lot more hassle and damage then the occassional pill/joint etc.
