I am on a very low income at the moment due to poor health but i manage all my bills and have a good credit rating. If i am honest with them then they will definately use this information to penalise me if i ever want a small overdraft etc. For this reason i will tell them what they want to hear but it will be a load of nonsense

They're not just recording this information in a vacuum. It will be recorded, reviewed, cross checked. If you tell them you're earning £x but they can see that this is substantially higher than your actual income crediting the account - they're either going to come back to you wanting even more info to clarify OR they'll just outright exit you. Once someone in their review team pushes that button, you'll get 60 days to find yourself a new bank and that decision won't be reversed.

Lying is even more foolish and risky than just not replying at all.

Nationwide made me go through a process to update my details early 2024, even though the details were the same. Were very authorotive about it goving me deadlines to take proof into the branch. Now again hot message on app saying i have to give them lots of other details by early march or they"ll restrict my account. Im fuming, don't use any credit line withem, never gone over drawn and only use it to pay bills because all other local banks have closed down. Demanding employers details, salary, dated started, employment title aswell as a host of other information. Says its a government legal requirement and they can use the information against my authority. No other bank has been so intrusive, but if they are trying to keep inline with the law then I am concerned about just how far our country is going to monitor our every movement. No they won’t use it to penalise you for a small over draft, that is secured lending and if you’re applying for one , it will be done on a credit scored basis

well, you’re welcome to store your money under the bed ;)

OctaveoOctober · 14/01/2025 20:16

@Terrifiedofthedentist well unfortunately I need a bank account to receive and pay money through.

I'd never hold money in any bank the rates are too low. In that sense you may as well store it under the bed

So, if you're a business analyst with a tech company with a salary of £80k, the profile of expected transactions on your account will be different from a lower level civil servant with a salary of £40k (making all of these numbers up, obviously).

If you're the second case and suddenly large transactions start moving across your account, that might trigger an investigation into the source of funds so the bank can be sure it's legit (you've won the lottery/received an inheritance/sold a property).

Nothing to do with marketing of your data at all.

I do not and never have laundered money so why should I have to sacrifice my privacy. If there is money laundering and fraud going on with some members then they will have to find other ways of detecting it.
I've been a member for 45 years and have never had this problem.

RampantIvy · 21/01/2025 18:47

As far as I can remember Nationwide have never asked me for this information. Am I in the minority?

That’s what all money launders say. Have you ever paid for a service in cash?

JoyousLurker · 15/03/2025 20:23

its not they have been aksed to do this by the dwp so they can seen incomes and personel detals of someone that may be claiming.

Yes although I can still login to my Nationwide App my CC account info is hidden until I provide very personal info that frankly I'm not going to provide. This means I can't verify transactions using the App or keep a real time eye on transactions to look out for bogus ones. Therefore I'm not sure how this bit of UK banking magic is currently helping protect me or Nationwide! Having spent the last hour on the phone to Nationwide I conclude that, based on the calibre of their staff, they already have more information than they can be trusted with. I understand they may close my account unless I provide this information. I may find out more as my complaint progresses but if that's their wish then so be it - their loss! It's going to save me a fortune. Strange how my other banks aren't threatening the same.
