To ask you how much your deposit was for your house?

Dreaming of one day being able to buy a house, browsing Rightmove looking at all the lovely places. So I was just wondering - how much of a deposit did you pay on your house and how much was the house in total? How long did it take you to save up? Any tips on saving?

100% mortgage (£36,900) on a 60/40 shared ownership purchase in 1995. Didn't realise at the time the huge surcharge of a LTV over 90%.

Second property (100k) 3 years later and with equity from sale had 5% deposit so borrowed the additional 5% deposit from family to avoid the surcharge and repaid over a couple of years.

2 years later had 50k in equity so had a decent deposit and able to buy a house needing work which we could pay for rather than need to borrow to get the work done.

Dh sold his previous property which he had paid the mortgage off on so we were fortunate to have a 50% deposit with savings. Deposit was 300, house was 610.

Namey32 · 27/05/2020 06:09

£10,750, which was 10% of the purchase price in 2014. Saved hard for a few years. Worked two jobs.

Second house, 20% using the equity from my first house.

£6850 deposit (5%) of which £2500 was gifted and the rest we scraped together Whilst renting by eating solely Lentil Dahl and home made bread for months on end.

It’s not just deposit though, solicitors fees were brutal. Just over £80 for a letter to confirm we weren’t expected to pay the £2500 back from FIL.

AdultierAdult · 27/05/2020 07:11

Where are you? For our first we saved about £60k, £54k deposit and the rest in other costs. That was on a £272k house, we couldn’t borrow more at the time.

It depends on where you live (house prices), your income and circumstances. You can play around with online mortgage eligibility calculators to see what you’ll need.

FTEngineerM · 27/05/2020 07:12

2018* forgot to say.

Heidihoo · 27/05/2020 07:17

45% deposit down, on an 'expat' mortgage, only way to secure one. This was 2016.

Combination of years of saving, a lucky break with the Brexit exchange rate and the continuing falling value of the pound meant we could do it and continue to pay chunks off each year. Could pay it off now but low interest rates mean it's not worth it. We'll see what unfolds in the coming months.

£3k on flat £30k in 1986 . Salary was £10k . Couldn’t afford to go out for the next year . Deposit from divorce settlement on previous property bought for £12k !

We were lucky and were able to get a 95% mortgage so had an 8k deposit for a 150k house in 2018, took us 2 years to save.
We live in a cheap northern city so we went without a car and didn't go out often and had the cheapest bills we could for a while.

Flower34 · 27/05/2020 07:23

30k on our first flat in 2005. Later 75k on our house in London suburbs in 2011.

DrDreReturns · 27/05/2020 07:25

20k on 105k house in 2003
Then 160k on 260k house in 2009.
Mainly financed from family help (bank of Mum and Dad, inheritances etc)

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 27/05/2020 07:25

100k deposit, 110k mortgage. I didn't pay /save a penny, the deposit was all from husband's family.

FinallySleeping · 27/05/2020 07:27

£80k on a £470k house as a first time buyer. And £15k stamp duty (ouch)

Very similarly, we had £90k deposit on a £485k house plus around £15k stamp duty.

The house I was born in recently came on the market. It's a 2 bed flat in a scruffy Scottish town (although a nice flat). My parents bought for £12k and sold for £20k a few years later (late 80s). It's now on at offers over £200k.

Nottherealslimshady · 27/05/2020 07:29

30k which was 30% in 2016/17

rossKemp · 27/05/2020 07:30

45k which was a 15% deposit in 2019

Joffrey · 27/05/2020 07:30

About 18k on a £155,000 house in 2008, saving and family gift.
About 55k on a £310,000 house in 2015 thanks to equity in the first house.

crispysausagerolls · 27/05/2020 07:33

Paid 155k to take off market, 400k total for mortgage deposit. House 1.25m in 2019

Badoukas · 27/05/2020 07:37

10% deposit for a 2 bed terrace at £53k. This was in 1993 in a nice town in the south of England.

roff · 27/05/2020 07:41

£400k on a £500k house. Plus £20k of stamp duty and fees. This was 2016
