Hello, Mumsnetters. I'm on the lookout for a very chocolately, rich, and indulgent hot chocolate mix.

The Cadbury one in the purple tin just isn't satisfying my craving (pregnant, maybe that's why), and although I do enjoy making it from a bar of chocolate, that feels like lots more calories than a mix would be.

So, give me your recommendations for a really special treat, please :)

I don't like overly sweet chocolate. For everyday use I put one teaspoon of cocoa with Waitrose own chocolate mix. Make to a paste with hot water, then add milk. I froth the milk, then add a couple of squares of chocolate, with marshmallows and cream and top with grated chocolate.

I use tall latte glasses with long spoons and serve with a couple of chocolate Leibniz. Or homemade brownies. Real treat on a cold winter afternoon, that's when I miss my old open fire.

I use Waitrose or Sainsbury's Belgian chocolate. Tesco do a lovely fair trade one. No Cadbury's as I try to avoid palm oil.

The famous Parisian Angelina hot chocolate - you can now buy the chocolate powder to take home Smile Goes without saying make with whole milk!

I found a “lighter” solution too for the craving - sounds bizarre but a homemade turmeric latte with maple syrup (real so no palm oil - I hope!)

You do know about slow cooker hot chocolate don’t you (obviously only for large batches!):

4 pints milk
Tub of cocoa powder
Very large scoop of Nutella
Single cream

Look, you’re pregnant that makes it perfectly acceptable for you to buy Belgian chocolate custard, warm it up, and drink it as though it is hot chocolate. It will never be bettered.

Montezuma or Lindt for a treat.

1 mug

3 quarters full of milk - microwave for 1.5 mins

in another mug - boiling water, massive desert spoon of cadburys plus two chunks of milk chocolate

melt choc and mix powder with small amount of boiling water - add warm milk, top with squirty cream - works for us!

I know it’s not the same as ‘real’ hot chocolate but if you’re looking for an instant one that you make with hot water then the Aero one is miles and miles better than any others. I keep a tub at work for when I have a sugar craving in the afternoon.

I do love a proper milky hot chocolate too but there’s something about instant hot choc that takes me back to my childhood!

Would have to agree with PP that hot milk, 2tsp cocoa 1-2tsp of sugar is the way to go. adding a bit of double cream really adds to the taste.

Charbonnel er Walker is the MOST DISAPPOINTING product I think I have ever bought. Partly because I had assumed it would be fantastic. Watery. Thin. I ended up putting more and more in each time and then just gave up. It’s good on vanilla ice cream or just in a spoon (!). but as hotbchocolate i thiught it was awful.

I love Cafe Direct Sao Tome.

I don't drink it, but make from scratch with cocoa powder and milk - the other 3 members of the household add sugar to their individual tastes - whipped cream and marshmallows finish the job.

Another vote for twinnings Swiss. It’s about £4 but the tub is large and goes along way. Can’t comment on the Hotel Chocolat one but I will be trying it next time im InStore- the price of that put me off as the tubs are fairly small and £12+ each but if it’s better than the twinnings I may be converted!

A PP mentioned Montezuma's... I've just been browsing their website. The hot chocolate looks amazing. I may have to put in an order!
Loads of really good suggestions and recipes here so far.
Serious question. Should I product test each one of these and post my findings back here? 😂

There was another thread like this a few days ago, and someone said to just use chocolate milk... Since then, I've been making chocolate nesqik and warming it in a saucepan. Game changer Grin

Not really a hot chocolate fan, but the Whittard's dark choc mint one is lovely.

Whittards - particularly their special edition ones. They're doing a white chocolate sticky toffee pudding one atm that is gorgeous.

There is a Whittards near me and I can't walk past without going in for a taster - they're probably going to ban me soon Blush

The mexican chocolate hockey puck sized disks where you break off a couple of segments, melt into the milk and whisk.

This style as I can't find the brand I use:

They tend to come plain or with flavours like cinnamon, chilli etc.

Another vote for Clipper, sold in Sainsbury's. Chocolately rather than sweet.
