AIBU?

M&S returns - was I being unreasonable?

I bought some pyjamas from M&S for DS (aged 3) 5 weeks ago. Worn (indoors, as pyjamas tend to be) several times and washed according to instructions. Noticed a small hole had worn through one knee yesterday. Took them back with the receipt to the store, thinking pyjamas should surely last more than 5 weeks and asked for a credit note.

I was told that this could not possibly be a manufacturing fault as the hole was not along a seam, and so they could not send it back and there was nothing that could be done. Another assistant joined in and agreed with her.

I asked to speak to a manager. While waiting for a manager, the assistants had gone behind a door next to the desk and I heard one say to the other (loudly enough that I suspect she wanted me to hear) "that woman at the desk, she's definitely cut a hole in those trousers".

DH joined me at this point. Attitude of staff changes. Not sure if it is relevant but he is white (and male, obviously) and I am not; I only mention it as it's not the first time I am treated like crap alone and then suddenly better when he arrives.

The manager arrived and authorised a refund, saying send it back as a manufacturing fault. Assistant refunded me with cats bum face. I told quietly her as I was leaving that I had heard them talking; she denied everything.

I hate conflict and feel really shaken now. AIBU to have taken them back? Should I just have binned them and accepted that M&S clothes are crap quality and don't last longer than 5 weeks of occasional indoor use?

And AIBU to feel upset about being accused of deliberately damaging the clothes and lying? I know I shouldn't care what strangers think of me but it's really upset me.

YANBU to complain about the staff. I've had a similar experience in M&S - they seem to get off on it.

Maybe they should scrap that pointless SPARKS card and put that money into training their staff better.

That hanger story is crazy. Most of the time I decline the offer of a hanger, who wants to walk round town with a hanger!

Being old(er), over the last few years I had noticed that the quality of clothing at M&S had reduced drastically - the most common problem being small holes appearing in material. This was clearly down to the use of poor quality fabric. I also noticed that all the items that were annoying me this way were made in TURKEY!

I raised this issue with M&S and thought that they had reduced the items they get made there.

Lo and behold, a few weeks ago the poor practices in Turkey were revealed (Panorama program?) as they were using 8 year old Syrian refugees to make their stuff!

M& S - Never again!

Oh and an m&s return. Faulty bra, the plastic adjuster thingy on the strap snapped in two and actually put a foot long painful scratch down my arm when I took the bra off as I hadn't realised it was broken.

Took it back and they agreed I could have a replacement. Apart from they didn't have one in my size in stock and then expected me to pay the £4 delivery charge to get it sent to me. I had to politely point out that I had driven into town using my petrol due to their faulty item, spent £3 on parking due to their faulty item, had a massive scratch on my arm due to their faulty item and I was buggered if I was paying £4 delivery. There was eye rolling! From them, not me!

At the risk of sounding hanger-obsessed, Pikachu, be grateful they didn't ask you for the bra hanger! Last time I bought a bra from M&S, the sales assistant asked me if I wanted the hanger as I'd need it if I wanted to return it! WTF?!

Meryl yes there was definitely something about the whole attitude / culture, at least of that store - a sort of complete lack of pride in the quality of their product and almost contempt for their customers. I work in a public facing role (NHS) and a sure sign of a badly run department is when staff openly bitch about their "clients" i.e. patients. It was a similar vibe in M&S.

counterpoint that is interesting. I'm not sure where the clothes were made but the little holes appearing is very telling!

Thanks to everyone else Flowers

Pikachu how crap. That's the thing, the eye-rolling and the bitching - it's so unprofessional and such a complete lack of respect for people.

Yanbu
Also not unreasonable to think racism is at least as likely as sexism.

Hopefully you get a satisfactory reply to your complaint.

M&s and sainsburys have absolutely the worst customer service I've experienced when trying to make returns. So much so that I avoid buying clothes from them now.

That's terrible. Glad you have complained. I used to work for M&S and our supervisor was very hot on good customer service.

I can't imagine why they thought you had damaged it when you had the receipt? People do nick stuff and damage it and try and return it, but they don't have a receipt!

Best one I had was a guy who brought in a whole stack of t shirts in exactly the same shade of blue ( in all different sizes). He'd put a hole in them all, and told me that his family had all bought him the same ( differently sized) t shirt for his birthday, and they'd all got a hole in the same place. Hmm

Now he didn't get a refund, but I was perfectly polite and refrained from suggesting that he'd ( quite obviously) nicked them straight off the counter of another store.

Definitely going down the pan!
Even the food, I'm finding is not all that.
The rot set in back in early 90s, you could no longer get a pair of Childrens cotton pyjamas. Only nylon nighties with bloody Pocohontas plastered all over them.
In 1989 ish, I remember getting lovely pyjama sets for my children, two pairs of cotton pjs per pack, for a reasonable price, and very good quality.
I also remember some fabulous culottes and dungarees which lasted for YEARS, in fact one pair of culottes I bought for my girl aged seven, she was still able to wear ten years later!
Beat that.

And their shoes are beyond awful. I used to be able to tolerate their foot glove ones years ago, but not a single shoe currently in stock would I wear.
And it's a miracle if you can find a half decent cardigan.
Reminds me of Peacocks but with poorer quality. They're doomed I tell ya.

I ordered some Lego as a birthday present for my son from John Lewis. I had it delivered to my local Waitrose. When it arrived, it had a massive hole torn in the front of the box. The staff at Waitrose were lovely and rang up John Lewis for me, returned it for a replacement. A couple of days later, a replacement arrived. It had a very similar hole torn in the front of the box, repeated the process, a third box arrived from John Lewis with the same hole. Waitrose staff rang them up again; they said they could send another but couldn't guarantee it wouldn't be in the same state. They said if I didn't want to risk it I could return for a refund. By this point it was 2 days before my son's birthday. They didn't really offer any apology, but the Waitrose staff were so embarrassed they gave me a £5 voucher. It rather damaged my view of John Lewis, I must say!

That sounds really annoying Dahlietta . But I suppose they at least replaced it and Waitrose gave you a voucher. M&S would have accused you of cutting a hole in it yourself Grin

I bought my M&S jeans earlier in the year and they're already thining between the legs, previous M&S jeans have lasted a couple of years at least. Going to have to find somewhere else to buy them.

Wouldn't touch M&S clothes. Got some yoga type trousers, several pairs, fab cut/hang, but the seams and knees developed dozens of tiny holes and o, I'm not bursting out of them, they're loose fit.

Hmm more talk of tiny holes in knees - feel reassured it wasn't just me!

Only stick with M&S trousers as they fit me well and bras, otherwise barely buy any clothes there.

I had a recent issue with Debenhams and used a website called Resolver to log a complaint. It's free and all you need to do is detail what happened and it puts the info onto a standard letter, I've used it a few times and generally any issue has been resolved within a couple of days. I think the complaints go to a specific team so they tend to respond quickly. If they don't, the website tells you when you can escalate etc.

I did complain to John Lewis after googling their CEO and emailing him directly, I got a call the same night from a senior customer service contact and they resolved my issue.

I refuse to accept poor service and what you experienced is disgusting. You should defo complain, they can't reprimand the staff involved nor improve the service if people don't complain.

Good Luck

123mother I once acquired (can't remember if I bought them new, or from a charity shop) a pair of girls pyjamas. Dd1 was about 4. She wore them until she grew out of them. Ds wore them occasionally. Dd2 wore them. Dd3 wore them. The last time I saw them, dd1's eldest was wearing them...

This is sounds a bit familiar to me. A few months ago I bought a jumper from M & S which, after two washes, started to bobble quite badly. I had washed it as recommended on the label so I knew it was nothing to do with me. I wasn't concerned though as I presumed M & S would exchange or refund me without a problem - how wrong I was!

When I showed it to the woman at the customer services desk she she hummed and hawed and said she'd have to get someone else to have a look. So back she comes with the supervisor or whoever she was (all piss and importance as my Nan would say) who took a brief glance at the jumper and told me they weren't going to refund it as it wasn't a manufacturing fault and that 'it was normal for jumpers to bobble like that.' I told them it certainly was a fault and was not normal at all for a jumper to bobble after two washes. The supervisor then smirked at me and said in quite a mocking way: 'You can always write to head office and complain,' implying that I wouldn't get very far. 'Oh no, I won't bother with that,' I said. 'I'll just go and post this whole conversation on the M & S Facebook page with photographs of the jumper to illustrate what I mean.'

I've never seen a woman go quite so white. From further up the tills someone else appeared who I presume was her boss and who promptly told the first woman - who was still hanging around the till looking confused - to refund me straight away. Persons three and two then disappeared through the door at the back and I could hear both of them talking about me. I got my refund though. Wink

It's not a recent thing. 15 year ago I bought some trousers for work. Lovely flattering fit and very comfortable. After one wear they had pilled so badly between the legs that they were unwearable.

Sour faced woman on customer services told me it happened because I needed a bigger size. I put her straight about the shit fabric not being fit for purpose after asking for her name.

someone asked up thread about holes in clothing. I had a new washing machine (think very (supposedly) top quality brand, german starts with M). The family clothing started to develop small holes in random places. I thought initially it was old clothes, new washing machine, so i left it. After a year I realised it couldnt be that and phoned the company. After a LOT of effort (so ignore their 10 year supposed warranty) they finally came out and changed the drum in case clothing was getting caught by a small metal tag.I was told that due to the low water usage required clothing now bounces on a metal drum, not on water. This causes fibres to break and holes develop. I still get holes in my clothes. It sucks. I would like my clothing to last more than a few months. I think the low water usage comment has a lot of validity. The M company solution was for me to top up the water on each wash Confused

Uptown I had the same problem with M&S jumpers twice. When I took the first one back, they said I hadn't washed it carefully (though I had) so, when I returned the second one, I didn't wash it first. I explained why at the outset to the evil old bat charming customer assistant. It was a cardigan that had had light wear twice, worn over shirts (so no contact with my skin) and had no visible dirt or marks on it.

The M&S woman went into this tirade about how disgusting it was that I was bringing back something unwashed and how they couldn't take it back because her colleagues would have to handle it. This, as a I say, was a cardigan that looked clean and certainly wasn't smelly or sweaty. I was shock. I think she thought she could get away with it as I was only 23 or so at the time. I stood my ground, insisted on seeing the manager and got my refund. I also got complained to head office and got a grovelling apology but I've never forgotten it.
