AIBU?

To want a refund

I had a cake made for an important birthday. Whilst it wasn't quite cake wrecks bad it was certainly a Pinterest fail.

I've followed up with cake maker but she is implying it's my own fault.

AIBU to request a full refund?

It's leaning yes, possibly transport, but it looks lovely even if the gold leaf is only dotted in place. I would say no refund.

I agree that it's not as good as the inspiration but it's not that bad. It's still pretty so I would say no refund. It's not so far from the original that it's laughable or unusable.

I'm torn on this, it's definitely not bad enough to warrant being embarrassed to present it and it tasted good so yabu to want a full refund but it doesn't look £160 so maybe £60 refund would be fair?

Was it a child's or adults cake?

That doesn't look like a professionally made cake at all, especially the layer with the gold leaf - what a mess! But you can't ask for a full refund because you still served and ate it. I'd ask for at least a 50% refund though because you didn't get what you ordered - what you got looks nothing like the first photo.

I think the gold leaf is awful! It looks really bad.

It was transported flat for a few minutes after which the first photo was taken. It got worse.

It doesn't look like a professional cake.

Partial Refund?

Partial refund.

What did they say it would look like? As in, they couldn't directly copy the first photo, as obviously that would be unprofessional, so what did they say they could produce instead?

I'd be fuming. And I don't even like cake! The cake you got looks like the cake you wanted, but as if .

Sorry, couldn't help it. Grin

I think it's really ugly. But I also think it's hard to ask cake makers to copy someone else's design. It takes them out of their comfort zone and is unlikely to be as good as the original. I'd ask for a partial refund.

I actually would have been embarrassed to present that and - did you say it was £160?

However I would have returned it not eaten it. The gold leaf looks horrendous.

Yes I think you need a refund! It doesn't look professional at all. Utter waste of £160

I quite like the leaning angle. Looks slightly like the picture but more a child's GCSE version, then professional. You ate it though. So maybe a small return cash wise? £50?

RubbishMantra Grin brilliant! I'm laughing so much while trying hard not to wake poorly DD asleep next to me

Cake, now that I'm over the Shock of the price, looking at the picture I think you deserve a partial refund. The cake shouldn't have collapsed after such a short distance. I don't think you're going to get much luck with any money back though as they will stick to their guns and say it's down to care during transportation.

LeftRightUpDown · 12/10/2016 05:23

Well...I personally think it looks bloody awful. The gold leaf is patchy and I can't understand why the cake would collapse like that if it was transported correctly.

It was an adults cake.

In fairness I wasn't expecting an exact replica. I sent a number of pictures which set out the design I was

I think it looks awful and amateurish (sorry), and what a pity the maker copied someone else's design. I can't see how transporting it made it collapse like that. Maybe the top tier was too heavy for the bottom tier and it's a design fault. My DN is a cake maker and she made a two-tiered sponge like that for a party. She brought it in two separate boxes and assembled the cake when she got to my house. I would ask for a partial refund.

NightWanderer · 12/10/2016 06:13

By the way, I didn't mean the original was ugly. I just didn't think the painting on the replica was very good, the flowers look like they were from the pound shop and the gold leaf was flaked off. I also don't really understand how the cake collapsed. It's all very weird.

The cake you got is hideous. As others have said - GCSE standard.... I'd be less concerned about the leaning and more concerned about the hideous scribbling on it.

It's a long way from your inspiration!

It looks like my children made it, I think she should give you £100 of it back, if you'd collected it would you have accepted it?

Report
DesolateWaist · 12/10/2016 06:21

If the cake maker was unable to replicate the design, for example painting the flowers, then she shouldn't have agreed to do it.
I think that you can ask for a partial refund, however the problem is that you ate it and that might lessen your argument.
Personally I think it looks dreadful and not worth the money.

I accept that I am in the minority, but I just don't get the whole thing about cakes- paying £160 or more for a cake? These elaborate designs just leave me cold.
Big lumps of sugar, too sweet to be edible,
All my kids birthdays I have I have bought a novelty cake from ASDA £10, job done.

I think if you ate it then you pay , you should have taken it back as soon as the shop was open and left a message as soon as you received it to say that was what you would be doing , that way you could have taken them to small claims , if it bothered you so much . From their POV ,you found it acceptable to serve it so why should they refund you .

If I was paying £160 I would expect an exact replica. Isn't that the point of going with a professional? The bottom tier seems okay but obv leaning. The top is just a mess. I would be demanding at least £100 back and cutting my losses as tasted fine
