To say there's nothing remotely funny about being knocked to the ground by a dog

While walking on the beach with DH and our own dog, (which was on a lead at that time) I was aware of this crazy spaniel who was charging all over the place (as spaniels tend to do), he'd already been up and greeted our dog but they didn't have a proper play as ours was then on the lead because we were getting near to the beach's exit. A few minutes later I all of a sudden felt a huge blow to the back of my knees, I just fell to the ground in a heap. The crazy spaniel then stood over me trying to lick my face. DH was trying to pull me up but I literally just couldn't move straight away. Anyway the spaniels owner came along saying sorry but laughing at the same time.

I really didn't think it was funny, DH thought I was exaggerating with my inability to get straight up,

This is why I hate dogs.
Because there are so many dog owners who think this shit is ok.
It's hardly fair to hate dogs because some owners are idiots. Sensible dog owners acknowledge that their own dogs are not perfect, but the idiot owners - the ones who leave dog shit lying in the car park and on the football pitch, and whose dogs regularly get out without a collar on, and whose dogs have precisely zero recall, and who let their dogs barrel about until they do damage - really, really piss the rest of us off.

If my dog had knocked somebody over, I'd have been insanely apologetic.

Oh don't get me wrong SerChenjin.
I'd laugh but I'd also be concerned and help the person.

You haven't got a serious knee injury though, have you?

So it's OK for dogs to knock people over as long as they're not seriously injured? Hmm

And spaniel size..........you stepped back and tripped over it, didn't you?

The OP said there was a huge blow to the back of her knees, which suggests the dog ran at her.

Arc I'm 5ft 5 and I measure 19inches up to the knee. The average springer is 21 inches high......so your point?

I always laugh by default when something takes me by surprise, even if it's something that I know isn't funny.

My friend told me the other week that her 3yo has broken her collar bone. I laughed Blush

Ilive - best not to laugh but to just get on with apologising, making sure that the person is OK and not hurt. If they then choose to laugh then laugh along with them (as opposed to at them).

What on earth has the size of the OP's legs got to do with anything??

Your attitude is reason dog owners get a bad name
So as long as a dog does not kill someone, break a bone or leave someone screaming in pain they can do what they want and we are meant to find it funny Hmm

Oh my god I was kicked over by my friend's two bouncing Labradors the other week. I really hurt my wrist actually as I am quite well padded and landed on my hand/wrist . I was in quite a lot of pain and felt so embarrassed and also fuming as if got bloody mud and paw marks all over me, but of course I did that stupid British thing of laughing like it's oh so funny. I am still embarrassed if I start thinking of it now. Who the hell gets knocked over by a bloody Labrador I thoight. Turns out it's quite common. Who knew?! Bloody stupid dogs.

I think she was trying to trip me up SirChenchin, I'm of average height, with average legs

What is it with some posters??

Blimey, don't go on the beach if you don't like dogs? SHE'S GOT A SODDING DOG! IT JUST DOESN'T KNOCK PEOPLE OVER, BECAUSE SHE'S TRAINED IT PROPERLY!

I can tell you I am now tempted to tread muddily on the clothes of everyone whose filthy dog jumps up at me. Oh, and crap on the pavement where their children walk, too.

This is all so unfair on responsible dog owners.

limitedperiodonly · 12/02/2016 21:29

There's no need to shout SonjasSister. It was a beach on which dogs are allowed and on which they are allowed to be off lead. No one said people shouldn't go on it or that people allow their dogs to crap on it without clearing up.

But perhaps people who don't like dogs and refer to them as filthy should stay away. After all, there are plenty of other places.

I've had a dog barrel into me before, unfortunately I have arthritis and don't have the stability of a normal person. the dog hit the back of my right knee where the worst damage is and I'm currently looking at a knee replacement due to that fall and prior damage. I had to have an ambulance called as I couldn't get up. I landed on my bad wrist too and the inflammation in it has meant I have to wear a wrist splint most of the time now.

So no I probably wouldn't have found it funny. You have no idea what that person is going through and what disabilities they may have.

I'm 28 and facing a knee replacement.

Dolly, I'm a cat person. Still think it's funny that she's so uptight over something that's not a big deal.

I go running and there is nothing more annoying than dogs out of control. One chased me and repeatedly jumped up at me the other week. I stopped dead and yelled at the smirking owner to get it on a lead, I'm afraid I didn't see the funny side at all.

Bloody dangerous, and yes, you could face a big personal injury claim against you through insurance. It's absolutely right that you pay up if your neglect to control a dog in a public place causes injury or potentially loss of earnings or medical expense.

On finding things funny, I think there's a difference between things people accidently do to themselves (incl things like slipping on ice Blush. ) and things that happen to them- e.g. being knocked down by a dog when they've minding their own business. I'll admit that I often find the former very funny and may have to suppress a laugh, but I don't find the latter funny at all.

SirChenjin · 13/02/2016 11:39

It's interesting. I don't find people doing things to themselves funny at all - my very first reaction is 'oh crikey, I hope they are all right'. Once I knew they were OK, and if they were laughing too, then I would laugh. If my first reaction - before I knew they were OK - was to laugh I'd be working on overcoming that.

I don't want to say yabu or yanbu.... the last time I was knocked over (by a labrador running at me at full speed, and then both of us trying to avoid collision by veering - to the same side :D), I laughed the hardest... :)

I'm a cat person. I also have a soul.

Did you read alphabetty's post? Or were you too busy crapping yourself laughing at people failing over on YouTube?

Lots of similar stories from other people disabled and physically impaired by out of control running dogs. Anyone still laughing can google Tibial Plateau Fracture fixation operation and see what's involved in repairing the damage and the months of physical therapy that follows to regain the use of the damaged leg.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha Pigeon - that looks hilarious. I'm not surprised that some people's first reaction (before they know the extent of any injury) is to laugh, it's just so funny.

Oh wait. No it's not.

Of course that x-ray isn't funny.

But when accidents happen some people laugh out of shock or embarrassment.

I agree that continuing to laugh after the initial shock, perhaps while pointing and taking photos would be .

Requesting a copy of the x-ray in order to make a greetings card would definitely be bad, unless you knew the person really well, IMO.
