To say there's nothing remotely funny about being knocked to the ground by a dog

While walking on the beach with DH and our own dog, (which was on a lead at that time) I was aware of this crazy spaniel who was charging all over the place (as spaniels tend to do), he'd already been up and greeted our dog but they didn't have a proper play as ours was then on the lead because we were getting near to the beach's exit. A few minutes later I all of a sudden felt a huge blow to the back of my knees, I just fell to the ground in a heap. The crazy spaniel then stood over me trying to lick my face. DH was trying to pull me up but I literally just couldn't move straight away. Anyway the spaniels owner came along saying sorry but laughing at the same time.

I really didn't think it was funny, DH thought I was exaggerating with my inability to get straight up,

I'm genuinely quite shocked that so many people would have found this funny. Not in a judgemental 'you're all sociopaths' kind of way, just very, very surprised. I don't know of anyone like this in RL.

Also, one poster commented that This was a beach where dog walking is allowed. If you don't like dogs, don't go there, and others have said things along the same vein. The majority of beaches near us are 'dog friendly'. This means they welcome well controlled dogs alongside all the other beach users, and provide things like dog-poo bins. It does not mean that the entire beach is given over to dogs and that those dogs or dog owners enjoy any more rights than anyone else using the beach.

should have been a bit more contrite

I would find it hilarious..!!! Grin x 1,000

Were I watching Tom and Jerry Sad

Perhaps the owner should have been flattened by DH into a pancake at ground floor level with a hat on and then some arms could extend out of the pancake and 'pop' the hat back on then it all would have been a great cartoon laugh....

But as this is real life that particular irresponsible dog owner should not have been a bit more contrite.

No - that's just not true. Not true at all. You may get a couple of people condemning all dogs and all owners, but you'll also get the same number saying that all kids should be kept indoors, or they are just being overly dramatic not wanting dogs jumping up on them or barking and scaring their children etc. The overwhelming majority of people on dog threads are just simply fed up with poorly trained animals - direct your disheartenment to those owners, not the people on the receiving end of a dog that's never been exposed to any type of behaviour control.

LumelaMme · 14/02/2016 19:06

What I meant was, whenever someone starts a thread to complains about a dog or a dog owner, ALL dogs and ALL owners end up being condemned.

It's disheartening, if you're a decent dog owner who spends time and effort on training, doesn't leave dog shit lying in your animal's wake and appreciates and understands just how much dogs have done for humanity over several thousand years.

Do you mean all dog threads - or just the ones where people are venting about poorly trained ones and their inconsiderate owners? Because imo, after being on MN for many years, it's the latter that end like this.

wave stumps - no-one has done that, what a very odd (and quite unpleasant) thing to say. Or was that just a poor attempt at humour?

I hate dog threads. They always end like this.

If only ! Grin

id have given the dog a hard kick to knock it over then joined the owner in laughing at the dog falling over and being hurt .

That's a very unpleasant thing to say iminshock. It's a dumb animal. Do try to keep a sense of perspective in case you're mistaken for one too.

Do try to recognise a joke when you see one

Aspergallus I could have written the first half of your post .

There are two small dog free areas (all the other green space and the parks are one lovely big dog toilet) where I live with big clear signs and selfish idiot dog owners still take their animals in there.

There are many young families living in flats without gardens around here and these areas are the only places they can play (supposedly ) that are free from toxicara etc. Obviously dogs knocking anyone over is out of order.

DeoGratias it would be interesting to know what proportion of the population would like dogs banned from public places - probably quite high. At least make the owners put them on leads.

I'd have been really annoyed too, if this happened to me. I don't think it is at all funny.........

Of course YANBU OP. I hate dog owners that allow their dogs to jump up on people. It's not acceptable, and also not acceptable to laugh at your dog knocking over a stranger.

I walked across the street the other day. I personally know someone who was killed doing the same thing.

Are you sure they didnt chuck themselves in the traffic to get away from you?

ohmywhatatwat Same behaviour, same outcome - OP was injured and unable to immediately get up due to said injury. It might not be as extensive an injury as other posters, but still an injury.

Dogs run riot, sometimes it can be policed and sometimes it can't - although better training to stop on command would prevent this. But an irresponsible owner laughing at causing injury to another person is despicable. Love.

Im not seeing how my post was irrelevant, my injury was caused by the exact same scenario described by the OP

Except the result wasn't the same. I walked across the street the other day. I personally know someone who was killed doing the same thing. Just because the result of your scenario lead to graver circumstances doesn't suddenly increase the seriousness of another.

Put the Xrays away, love.

Because I'm sure from a distance it looked funny. Some people don't get offended over things like this and laugh along. did you die? No. Did you break a bone? No

So as long as a dog doesn't kill you or cause you to break a bone, it can hurt you any other way and you are supposed to laugh along because dogs will be dogs? Er No. Humans are not allowed to hurt someone else and dogs aren't either.

If only we could send all the dogs somewhere. I don't know where. Maybe somewhere like a private island. That would be a good idea.

I don't think we should stop at dogs, we could put anyone who we disapproved of there.

If only someone owned such a place, it would be a very noble thing for them to do...

I hate dogs. Sorry. Not individual dogs, just the whole concept of them as pets. And how someone's else's choice of pet has to impact on everyone else in the community. We live by a beach and large park and I'm constantly on guard for dog faeces and bounding dogs off leads when out with the kids.

But I think she was probably laughing as she expected, dog-owner to dog-owner, some common understanding of how these things happen. Not saying that's right, since you had your dog on a lead after all, but guessing that's why she felt it was ok to laugh. She probably wouldn't have if it was someone without a dog, or a child who was knocked over?

By the way, OP if you're experiencing any ongoing pain or problems putting weight through your leg, go and have it X-rayed. I walked on tip-toe for four days before the hospital decided that there was a fracture and admitted me for surgery.
