Biscuit, that quote is very very funny! And however can any shop sell homogenised bloody gold top milk? The nitwits, it has to have about three inches of thick cream on the top. At least. Four is better. Or a whole bottle of just thick cream. (I'm getting too excited here... "Nurse!")

Tzibeleh · 30/11/2014 20:10

No no no no no. SILVER topics non-homogenised, with the cream floating on the top (, sorry).

Gold top is all top-of-the-milk, ie fattier than regular 4% full fat milk, but less fatty than single cream.

Milkshake = Good.

All sorts, thick, thin, hot, cold, custardy, ice-creamy...

But not artificial banana flavour. Nope. Just not.

Pint of milk, scoop of vanilla ice cream, fresh banana, one raw egg, generous scoop of Nutella, and whizzzzz. My big bros' recipe when we were kids. Boy, we went through a lot of milk! Haven't had it in years...

When I was a child my dad used to take me out to the cooler where the milk was chilled before it was bottled and scoop off a massive cup of cream. It was inches thick. There's a fight in our house to get to the milk jug in the morning to get to the cream on the top first Grin

A place near me does the best ever vanilla milkshakes, I sometimes go there and have one instead of a coffee. Delicious.

I love milkshakes. Not often, but sometimes they're the only thing that will do.

I hate preachy lying vegans. Almost always. Not to be deliberately misunderstood as all vegans.

YY to dipping chips in MacDonalds thick shake

I love milkshakes - haven't had one in ages. In my younger days a chocolate milkshake (any brand) would just cure any period pains immediately. Banana milkshakes in pregnancy were a huge craving and I want to go to eds dinner NOW and have their coffee one.

I worked on the farm next door when I was a kid.
One of my jobs was herding the cows in ready for insemination.
Pauline DFOD with your emotive bollocks.
Oh and I got paid a fiver for my efforts :)
I love milkshake but havent had one in years.

Ah fuckin' 'ell. Was reading a lovely thread debating milkshakes. Making mental notes on recipes. Debating whether to go mix myself up an Oreo milkshake.

Then suddenly I'm reading about cows in rape cages Hmm. I thought this was supposed to be light hearted??

Pauline, I don't know how all dairy cows are treated, but in our village there are two dairy farms. I'm great friends with one of the farmers and his wife. They have a prize herd of Holstein Friesians, and do a Farm Open Day every year. I've seen all the procedures of their milk production, and despite being a real softie with all animals, have never witnessed anything too terribly ghastly there. I bet if I asked the wife about 'rape cages' she'd fall over with amazement.

I've been on the farm since I was born and it's been here for generations. I've never heard of rape cages. If we are inseminating they stand in their stalls munching, I've never seen anything barbaric. If they're in the field with the bull they all have a great time and I've never seen a cow run away from Harold (the bull) yet! Nor have I ever seen him holding a cow down against her will. Grin. I sometimes feel sorry for Harold, as we need to bring him in for a day or so due to tiredness bless him.

Tzibeleh, sorry, you put a raw egg in your milkshake?? Why?!
I'm happy Pauline posted, it's good to get a variety of viewpoints :)
I don't think anyone can argue with an Oreo milkshake though.

Tbf Pauline did make us think - admittedly I thought about how much of a loon she appears to be - but I did think.

Milkshakes are lush, cows don't get inseminated on monkey racks (for a start they'd need to be pretty big monkies Wink

I looked at the links Pauline provided. One stated dairy cows were pumped full of hormones. We supply one of the largest dairies in the UK and their milk is everywhere. She clearly knows little in relation to suppliers of these large dairies, the high standards to which animals have to be kept or the testing that is done on the milk. I'm happy to respect people's choices on any food they choose to eat but I do hate scaremongering tactics to try and 'encourage' others to follow their example.

Hatespiders · 30/11/2014 21:18

I know this is getting a bit off-topic, but I do feel I have to defend dairy farmers, as the ever decreasing price of milk is seriously affecting their livelihoods. Many have had to sell their stock and give up dairying after generations at the same farm, as they're paid so little for their milk it isn't worth carrying on. I'm doing my best by drinking gallons of lovely full cream milk, but there's only so much one elderly fat woman can do...

I think a lot of vegan food information comes from America and farming there is quite different to here. On the flip side tho, the USA seem to have food marketing boards which spread inaccurate propaganda about negative effects of competing foods, soya products for example.

As for the 'rape cages' I've never heard of them, but wonder if someone has got confused somewhere along the line by the use of those weighing cage things, as I'm sure I've got a vague memory of seeing medicine given and cows inseminated whilst in one of those.
