To think pitta bread is just shite?

I mean...I'm always reading "Make pitta pockets!" and "Fill pitta bread with (insert gorgeous ingredients)

But when you do, it's like eating a brown envelope stuffed with ham etc. Dry, horrid. Again I have bought pittas from Sainsbos only to find they're dry and horrible! They don't even open up properly but crumble...it's the same whenever I buy them..is it the brand or are they just a shitty sandwich?

I love pittas but they are so very heavy on the carbs so have to be avoided I'm afraid. If I do have a blowout I toast, split, cool and stuff with salad and hummous. Delicious.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 17/06/2013 20:24

I had some falafel recently at a "do" in unwarmed pitta pockets Shock
My friend and I said we'd rather have had without the pitta.

But when toasted pitta is great !
One of my best meals ever was lunch in a Lebanese ? restaurant with massive fab flatbreads and freshly made houmous.
(Was a great discovery just over the road from a nursery school I was teaching in too)

I very often just take them out of the packet, spread some concentrated tomato puree on them, a bit of salami, a bit of grated cheese and under the grill it goes. The kids love their baby pizzas:)

Make your own and you will be a convert. Look at Delia's recipe (she and I use a bread machine to make the dough). They are bloody lovely, soft and not at all dry and SO easy to make Smile

Furball · 17/06/2013 20:58

Make your own your say? Delia you say? right - I'm giving them a go

as technically I agree with op, but am willing to be converted

Xmasbaby11 · 17/06/2013 21:00

They need to be toasted but still very dry and bland to my taste. In a few places you can buy better quality pitta breads and i think they are worth the money.

GoofyIsACow · 17/06/2013 21:03

The things you learn on MN! Warm your pittas you say... Well bugger me!

Eilidhbelle · 17/06/2013 21:08

Flick water at them before you toast them an they'll puff up. Then stuff them with hummus, falafal and creme fraiche, amazeballs. I'm really hungry.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 17/06/2013 21:27

DD lives them so I love them too. At least it's food she's eating.Hmm

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 17/06/2013 21:28

Thry do taste much nicer though in Greece or Cyprus Wink.

K8Middleton · 17/06/2013 21:47

I fancy the flat bread receipe. Jamie was it? I approve of his pizza recipe so I have high hopes.

chocolatespiders · 17/06/2013 21:49

Lidl wholemeal pittas are tasty and a bargain (39p) toasted with soup I have them everyday.

K8Middleton · 17/06/2013 21:50

Found 'em, pinned 'em. Now just need to order yoghurt.

Steben · 17/06/2013 21:54

Fry pittas in a tad of olive oil and butter and slice to serve dipped in hummus - IMMENSE

Mumsyblouse · 17/06/2013 21:59

I always loved pitta, but I've just discovered the water trick (quick dunk under the tap for one millisecond as you might do with a naan bread). It makes them even softer and more delicious.

I also like them if you toast the outsides under a flat grill, then put cheese on one uncooked side, melt the cheese, then put the cooked top back on and grill for a few secs. Better than cheesy toast.

carrots and humus

lush

pickledsiblings · 17/06/2013 22:06

I don't think anyone has mentioned that you can pop them in the toaster straight from the freezer - that's what I love best about them, so convenient.

SoupDragon · 17/06/2013 22:06

I make my own. From ingredients to bread in under an hour and eat them straight from the oven. Fabulous.

Blondie1984 · 17/06/2013 22:19

I buy the m&s ones, zap in microwave for 20 secs, split open and fill

quesadilla · 17/06/2013 22:46

YABU. Pitta bread with loads of butter and marmite is heaven. Trick is a) wet them a bit first and b) use the grill not the toaster. Oh, and never buy them from Tesco if you can help it.

plinkyplonks · 17/06/2013 23:28

They taste yummy toasted :) I put splash water on each side then put in the oven.. sometimes with some butter inside. Fill with roasted veg and houmous!! Or sometimes I use them as breakfast wraps, prepared in the oven before being filled with mushrooms, eggs, sausage and beans :) Yum!!!
