Do you remember this Mumsnet story…? Update

Eight years ago I was on Mumsnet and there was a thread from a lady who was barricaded in her bedroom with her kids while her drunk husband was outside it. She had found a place in a refuge but was panicking about what to do with her pets. People all over the country were offering help. I was one of them. As it happened we were only about 30 miles away, and we had room to foster both the dog and the bunny, so the lady asked me to take them. Two days later I went to collect them. She had three young children, who were incredibly brave saying goodbye to their pets. Another Mumsnetter was coming to pick up the lady.

When the dog got to our house he was terrified of men, barking at every man he saw. He also dribbled pee all the time. Wishing a week he stopped both and glued himself to the side of our other, confident dog. The only time I have seen him do the wee thing since was when my father was slowly dying in hospital and I was crying a lot. He’s always been very worried if anyone is angry or crying.

He was 3 when he arrived. Last month he turned 11. He’s still happy and loving life. The bunny lived for another five years. His companion (that we got him) is still here and on her 5th companion - she’s like the Duracell bunny, keeping going as those around her go!

I lost touch with the family. They had so much going on. But if you’re out there I hope you see this and know he’s had a great life, still is!

This is so refreshing and lovely. This space can be so toxic- but this reminds me why it’s important

I do remember that thread. What a lovely update and what a kind person you are. Did you ever suspect he might not be going back to them?

We originally said that we’d foster for as long as she needed, and not to stress about that. We kept in touch for a while, but she had to keep moving refuges and she changed her number so we lost touch.
I hope she knew that they were safe and she could concentrate on the children. But I have often thought about them all and hoped that they ended up with a safe and happy future.

What a lovely update OP. I'm so delighted the dog found you (and you him) and that he's been able to live his best life with you since. You really are an angel!

This is just so heart warming. I have tears in my eyes. I love labradors and have a chocolate one. She's my best friend and always picked up on my fear when my ex would get mad at me. She stayed beside me through everything. I love her so much.
Thats amazing you gave those pets a great life and they are so lucky to have you. I do hope the family are ok and would love them to see this. ❤️

What an amazing and beautiful post @Petsaresafe ! Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this.

In case it ever helps anyone, please know that a Dogs Trust separate charity called Freedom does similar, placing dogs and other pets with adopters into a new safe area until Mum and or kids are settled into a new home and life and can have their pet family reunited with them. That might only take a few weeks, it could be the pets are fostered for over a year. As long as is needed. https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/get-help/freedom

For anyone who would like to volunteer, please do. Food, vets are paid for, behaviourists can support you too. The team are amazingly supportive and it’s very rewarding to know you helped enable someone to escape violence and that you are entrusted with their hugely loved family pet. If you can donate, please support them.

We adopted my boy but he had an abusive home at the start of his life and as PPs have said, he is years on now still so sensitive to loud men and comes and comforts me if I ever cry. Breaks my heart to think on what he went through, but he is now so very, very loved.

The loveliest post! Thank you!!

That dog looks like the bestest, goodest boy who is loving life!!

He is.
I’m a bit embarrassed at everyone singing my praises on this thread. Most people would have done similar if they could. And we have ended up with a wonderful dog, a much loved part of the family, for eight years, out of someone’s tough time..

Lowena76 · 24/04/2026 19:52

What a beautiful life you’ve given their pets. This is such an uplifting thread. Are you in County Durham OP? Some views look very familiar.

I’ve had a tough day and honestly this has made me cry like a baby! What a kind thing to do and I hope the family are all doing well

Iheartmysmart · 24/04/2026 19:54

What a lovely thread. You are a most wonderful person @Petsaresafe

My parents used to foster and one day this poor little dog arrived, completely shut down as she’d been regularly beaten by the man who also abused his wife and children. She had a broken leg which hadn’t been treated and numerous scars over her body. It was a very slow process but she blossomed into the most gentle and loving dog. Needless to say, once the court case was over my parents kept her and she had a wonderful eight years being spoiled rotten.

Jshkag · 24/04/2026 19:55

Amazing. And wishing that lady and her children well, I hope they are settled and happy now.

PinkNailPolish2026 · 24/04/2026 19:55

I remember the thread. It’s bloody heartbreaking to think of what that poor boy went through - thank you for loving him. He’s the BEST boy 🥰
