Do you remember this Mumsnet story…? Update

Eight years ago I was on Mumsnet and there was a thread from a lady who was barricaded in her bedroom with her kids while her drunk husband was outside it. She had found a place in a refuge but was panicking about what to do with her pets. People all over the country were offering help. I was one of them. As it happened we were only about 30 miles away, and we had room to foster both the dog and the bunny, so the lady asked me to take them. Two days later I went to collect them. She had three young children, who were incredibly brave saying goodbye to their pets. Another Mumsnetter was coming to pick up the lady.

When the dog got to our house he was terrified of men, barking at every man he saw. He also dribbled pee all the time. Wishing a week he stopped both and glued himself to the side of our other, confident dog. The only time I have seen him do the wee thing since was when my father was slowly dying in hospital and I was crying a lot. He’s always been very worried if anyone is angry or crying.

He was 3 when he arrived. Last month he turned 11. He’s still happy and loving life. The bunny lived for another five years. His companion (that we got him) is still here and on her 5th companion - she’s like the Duracell bunny, keeping going as those around her go!

I lost touch with the family. They had so much going on. But if you’re out there I hope you see this and know he’s had a great life, still is!

I did not know the story but want to let you know that you are a truly wonderful human being. I hope that the OP and her children are safe and I hope she sees this thread.

I also remember the thread as we had just rescued another dog from an awful life, we have apparently now stopped taking in dogs in need as my health is not what it once was, we are now a 3 dog family but I'm sure if one came along that needed a home we would make room in our bed.

Beautiful post. Well done to you and all concerned in rescuing the pets and for helping out that lady and her kids. I hope they are all doing well too.

ForCosyLion · Yesterday 21:18

You're an angel, OP. How wonderful of you to have given these lovely animals a home. Poor kiddies, having to say goodbye to their pets. I do hope the family has been able to make a better life for themselves. Sending so many hearts and hugs to both you and them - and the animals. And I'm sure the bunny is in bunny heaven, with endless carrots and lots of other bunnies to play with.

There are some good people in the world and you are one of them 🥰

vipersnest1 · Yesterday 21:46

@Petsaresafe, I suspect you are the person in a particular type of dress made for dancing? If so, whilst I don’t remember this particular thread, I do remember you as a lovely, kind-hearted MNer. Either way, you are a marvellous person.
Your post is the absolute core of what this whole fabulous nest of vipers is all about. I doff my hat to you. Flowers

BlakeCarrington · Yesterday 21:54

Aah, that’s brought a tear to my eye OP. Bloody well done you and I hope the lady and her little family went from strength to strength after losing that dead weight.

LivingTheDreamish · Yesterday 21:54

You did a good thing OP. Glad he has lived out his best life with your family and recovered from his trauma. Sending love to the brave Mumsnetter you helped in case she is reading. She had to focus on her children in that situation but she did right by her fur babies in finding them such a loving home.
