What's the highest quality chocolate you can get for your money?

I want something relatively accessible, but great quality. Not full of vegetable oil. I'm thinking maybe Tony's Chocoloney? No cadbury's, galaxy etc.

Paul A Young is lovely, they used to do a marmite truffle which was incredible.

My dad used to take me to the Burlington Arcade at Christmas to buy my mum chocolates from Charbonnel and I always got a sugar mouse. But now you can buy it everywhere! Still lovely.

Flowerblue · 12/11/2020 21:32

Ritter Sport and Moser Roth are both very good for the money. I found special Christmas editions of Ritter Sport in Lidl the other day.

Flowerblue · 12/11/2020 21:33

Moser Roth 70% dark is particularly good.

Booja booja do the most heavenly chocolate and have a good range for special diet requirements if needed.

@EssentialHummus

Tony’s is wonderful but why oh why is it Chocolonely and not Chocoloney?! Bothers me every time I see it.
You and me both. Lonely? LONELY??

Makes no sense.

Love the chocolate though.

GrrrrrrArghhhhh · 12/11/2020 21:35

Amedei Chuao 😋

GiantKitten · 12/11/2020 21:38

Lidl & Aldi both do fantastic quality fair trade chocolate at great prices.
Divine is really nice too but more expensive.

bubblesforlife · 12/11/2020 21:40

M&S Belgian chocolate is outrageously good, they do it in biscuits too.

DeepestDarkestRiver · 12/11/2020 21:41

For those of you who were asking. Smile
Tony is the English equivalent of the Dutch name Teun, and Teun van de Keuken is our founder. Teun is a Dutch TV journalist who kicked off the crusade against (child) slavery within the chocolate industry on the consumer report TV show Keuringsdienst van Waarde. Teun was shocked when he read that slavery still existed in the cocoa sector. He tried to discuss the problem with the large chocolate makers, but they completely ignored him. He stepped up and took action. Teun decided to lead by example and make 5,000 Fairtrade chocolate bars himself. Tony’s Chocolonely was born.

And because he felt like he was the only guy in the chocolate industry that cared about eradicating slavery from the industry, he named his chocolate “Chocolonely”. Get it? The chocolate industry was a lonely place for 100% slave free crusaders!

PuppyMonkey · 12/11/2020 21:42

Another vote for Moser Roth at Aldi.

Mumthedogsbeensick · 12/11/2020 21:43

I think the chocolonely name comes from 'Tony' trying to make 100% slave free chocolate and none of the large corporate makers being interested so he did it alone. Something like that anyway. It's bloody delicious though!

magicstar1 · 12/11/2020 21:43

Moser Roth chocolate from Aldi is gorgeous. They do lovely large boxes around Christmas, and have truffles out now which are sooo nice.

Runningoutofnamestochange · 12/11/2020 21:47

I would say willie’s cacao but they haven’t replied to my email so I’m going to try some of the suggestions on here in future.

katy1213 · 12/11/2020 21:47

Paul Young is amazing. Don't know why so many people go for Tony's Chocolonely - it's nothing special and there's better supermarket choices.

SlopesOff · 12/11/2020 22:03

@EssentialHummus & @GuillermoVanHelsing

From the website:
So who is this Tony anyway? And what’s up with the Chocolonely?
Our company was founded by Teun van de Keuken, a Dutch journalist who launched the crusade against (child) slavery in the chocolate industry on the consumer watchdog show Keuringsdienst van Waarde. Tony is the English equivalent of Teun. Teun was shocked to discover that slavery still existed in the cocoa sector. He tried to discuss the problem with the large chocolate makers, but they ignored him. So he took action. He decided to lead by example and make 5,000 Fairtrade chocolate bars himself. Tony’s Chocolonely was born.

And because he felt as if he was the only person in the chocolate industry who cared about eradicating slavery, he named his chocolate ‘Chocolonely’. Make sense? The chocolate industry was a lonely place for those crusading for 100% slave free!

tigerbear · 12/11/2020 22:05

Just ordered a box of Leonidas! Mmmm!

SlopesOff · 12/11/2020 22:08

Moser Roth made me feel really ill last time I bought it, far too sweet.
Doisy & Dam is not very chocolatey, more cardboard flavoured, if that was the only palm oil free chocolate I would give up chocolate.

I only buy Tony's, the uneven shapes are annoying but there is a reason for this:

Why are your bars unevenly divided?
To us it doesn't make sense for chocolate bars to be divided into chunks of equal sizes when there is so much inequality in the chocolate industry! The unevenly sized chunks of our 180g bars are a nice way of reminding our choco friends that the profits in the chocolate industry are unfairly divided. Check out our handy video explanation here.

'And in case you haven't noticed, the bottom of our bars represents the Equator. The chunks above are the Gulf of Guinea. Then from left to right you have Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin (terribly politically incorrect, we know, but we had to combine them to create enough space for a hazelnut), Nigeria and part of Cameroon.'

doodlejump1980 · 12/11/2020 22:15

@MrDarcysMa
I like the milk one and they’ve just brought out a milk one with bits of pretzel in which is just SO moreish.

Puddlepop · 12/11/2020 22:28

I don’t think Pump street bakery has been mentioned yet - I like the bars with crumbs of toasted bread in them, they taste like a grown-up version of Nestlé Crunch. And for modern, sharp chocolate design with innovative flavours, I would recommend Pierre Marcolini.

NullcovoidNovember · 12/11/2020 23:17

I think hotel choc still uses palm oil?..

Fortnum doesn't use palm oil..
. Tony's is nice but I find the blocks huge and thick to bite into too

hilariousnamehere · 12/11/2020 23:18

TEMPRD :)

hilariousnamehere · 12/11/2020 23:21

Balls I posted too soon!! Need an edit button! I'm slightly biased because it's partly mine, but we spent a lot of time making sure we had the best tasting and feeling chocolate we could, sustainable and also made in the UK 💙

Hope this is ok to post but happy to get rid of it if not!

BikeRunSki · 12/11/2020 23:24

Tony’s Chocolonely

I hadn’t come across it until last week, then 2 people have me a bar each fir my birthday. They were bad, bad people. 😂

NullcovoidNovember · 12/11/2020 23:25

Billy how lovely, what a nice Christmas memory! I may ask dh to do that.. Go all the way to London to buy me nice chockates but I think they use palm oil? I have been eyeing up their rose and violet creams apparently they are the best?

Graffitiqueen · 12/11/2020 23:28

Hotel chocolat is horrible and waxy.

Moser Roth cherry and chilli is my favourite atm.
