I wfh and drink lots of water so use the bathroom a lot, i am conscious about how much water i'd use by flushing the toilet multiple times a day.

So would it be awful to not flush after every wee?

Flush a toilet creates gallons of water waste. Water waste is a world wide issue. There is only so much water on earth can be safely used to sustain life.

@Summerfreeze

How does not flushing help tackle water shortages in Africa? Unless you actually can’t afford your water bill, what’s the benefit in not flushing?

@Summerfreeze because 97% of water on earth is salt water, which is not suitable for drinking.

That means 3% of water on Earth is fresh water, and only 0.5% is available for drinking – the rest is locked in ice caps and glaciers or under the surface of the earth.

So since population rates are growing and we only have a tiny percentage of all the water on Earth fit for consumption, it's helpful if we try and conserve it.

Not for the benefit of your water bill, but for everyone - yes, including people suffering droughts in Africa.

Now - leaving a wee to mellow overnight isn't going to do this on its own, obviously. But at least being aware of it and trying to reduce water consumption is something.

@Floralnomad

We don’t flush during the night for wees and dh gets up multiple times some nights but I always drop a bleach tablet into the loo before I go to bed as a compromise .

That is so awful!

Well yes, I'm sure that's much better for the environment ..

Yellow and mellow here. The revolting comment was classic MN

" I would keep a bucket of water near the toilet to pour down it."

I've tried this with old bath water and the water just goes everywhere.

Perfectly reasonable, why waste water.

Agree @Shaniac

Imagine telling someone who had no access to clean drinking water that we have so water we shit in it.

I'm firmly in the mellow yellow camp. Also, I'm very tight and on a water meter.

It's revolting not to flush each time.

Nah, whats revolting is that 3rd world countries have no safe drinking water and here in the uk we flush gallons and gallons of water a day for no real reason.

If it's just me and DS then I don't flush every time.

I make my DH flush though, his piss fucking stinks. If he's been up in the night and not flushed then the whole upstairs stinks of stale urine and it's vile.

Just realised how awful Brownian motion sounds in this context Blush

I go (for a yellow) a couple of times in the night so don't flush then to avoid noise and to save a bit of water.
By the morning the water in the bowl is always clear. Don't really understand how plumbing works, but I assume that the yellow water must somehow be in touch with some clean water and Brownian motion does its thing.

I'm completely ready to be told this is rubbish, but the fact remains that the water in the bowl in the morning is clear 🤷‍♀️

Not sure if it is just DH but I find pee stains the loo so I have to use loads to chemicals to clean it.

Also do you leave the paper In there? We have either copper or lead pipes (whichever is worse) and have to do a lot of flushing. Wish we could change it but in a block of flats and would be impossible to attach to the communal fall pipe

I live on my own so only flush twice a day. After my morning ablutions and then at bedtime. This catches all, you can set the time by my bowels.

I think it’s fine. We (me & DP) flush after brown and before going to bed so it’s not sat there overnight. We are careful with water usage generally and our bill is now £18 a month despite both being at home.

I can understand flushing, I can understand not flushing

What I can't understand is anyone judging others choice.

Not just in this instance, but the 'revolting' post just leaves me bemused and glad my friends aren't like that

I don't flush everytime if I'm on my own (I mean with a pee) but if I'm with someone then always flush after each use. Not really fair otherwise, I'd expect them to do the same (with lid seat closed).

@ExclamationPerfume I’m not lugging a bucket of water upstairs every five minutes for the kids to pour everywhere 😂😂😂

It’s really not ‘revolting’- I’d run up and give it a flush if we have visitors. And like @viques flush more in asparagus season 😂 or if it smells....

@MrsHerculePoirot in that case I would keep a bucket of water near the toilet to pour down it. Even the old washing up water would do.

🤣🤣🤣

Not as revolting as being unable to flush when it’s ‘brown’ because it was flushed less than 20 mins ago for just a kids ‘yellow’. There is only so much damage limitation VIPoo can do...

It's what we may all have to get used to if there are water shortages in the future ?

Not 'revolting', no.
