Reform tells its councillors to consider equalities – despite pledging to rip up the Equality Act

Reform UK councillors have been advised by the party to use equality impact assessments despite the party’s pledge to scrap the Equality Act 2010.

An official booklet, distributed at Reform’s annual conference in Birmingham last month and produced for councillors in charge of adult social care, advocates for equalities to be embedded in “understanding how decisions affect local communities”.

It also says “whenever significant decisions are made, the council should consider how different groups within the community may be affected”.

“Regardless of the future legislative framework the principle of understanding how decisions affect local communities remains fundamental to good governance”.

It later adds that considering equalities issues can help “form the evidence base upon which good decisions are made”.

Maybe - or reality has hit them in the face, and they have had to realise that as councillors they have to abide by the law.

Unlike the Greens.

But does seem a bit like saying the "right" thing in public, as opposed to what they say in private as illustrated by recent recordings.

They certainly have some very dodgy councillors.

They've gone over the top now though, I think, and are sliding down into irrelevance pretty fast.,

Trying to pretend they are reasonable people again?

  1. They act within the current legal framework so advice to Councils has to reflect that.
  1. They say that they would replace the Equalities Act, not just remove it. My understanding is that they want to remove the destructive elements of DEI programs, not remove equal rights.

This report is simply designed to weaken support for Reform. I don't think it will work.

I am not a Reform voter.
