'The risk to women from rape is completely different from the risk to other men.
For a start, men do not get pregnant and then have a life destroyed by having to either have an abortion or bring up a child of rape.'
I was very struck by this part of a comment on a thread I read today regarding the changed NHS policy re single sex instead of gender. It appeared to be in the context of a need to protect women from rape more than men from rape as the risk is greater to women than men.
For full clarity, I don't believe in gender beyond grammatical and linguistic use. In all honesty, I think it's absolute bullshit and consider myself GC. I am very in favour of sex segregated wards. This is not a thread secretly designed as pro-trans.
I've quoted the above because I saw it today, but I've been previously upset on reading this view in MN before, too. I'm not going to go looking for it again though, so perhaps it's just the one person repeatedly posting it.
Is this generally people's view?
I have quite a closed off life - in large parts due to the rapes actually. I'm not good at trusting people and I don't like going out beyond work, won't sleep anywhere other than my home and so I don't actually have any friends I could discuss it with, to try and find out how typical this view point is.
It honestly makes me feel quite ill. I've been raped quite a lot of times when you include partners you aren't allowed to say no to; 3 with violence or grooming separately to this.
I have always had rock solid contraception, so I have never been at risk of pregnancy when I was groomed and raped in my teens. My mum was raped a few times in her teens too, and advised it as a precautionary measure. The contraception was first in case I was raped, not for contraception in consensual sex. The most recent was actually anal rape. This was the most painful by a long way and actually took several years to physically heal fully from. There is obviously no danger of pregnancy or abortion from this at all...
I have a lot of anger about the rapes, mostly those 3, the others were just miserable and frankly dull. Wet. Not a lot. Today though, I find myself spinning out a bit. I don't feel angry - I feel scared again, like when they'd just happened and I felt sick with shock and disbelief. Convinced noone would believe me anyway and that it somehow didn't count anyway.
Is this a general view? Do you agree with the view I quoted at the top? Is it worse if a woman is raped than a man? If you do agree, do your views change with women who were raped but couldn't get pregnant? What if that's due to anal rape - does that not count somehow?
I am left feeling like the worst rape, the one I have flash backs and nightmares about a decade on; that left me somewhat incontinent for years and left me unable to sit comfortably for months, somehow doesn't count. It wasn't that bad, could've been worse. Could have been a proper rape... I've not been at risk of pregnancy for any of it, really - was any of it rape that actually mattered as that has never been a concern for me?
This really isn't hyperbole. These are genuine questions, if slightly angry ones. I've had a lot of therapy, but it's never really helped. I am not good at seeing reality around it and always told myself I just needed to stop being a fucking baby and it wasn't that bad. My life after all wasn't destroyed by an abortion. It was just destroyed by me leaking shit.
(I've chosen this board, because I've only ever seen this view on here in GC conversation in all honesty. I will be back, but this took me a stupidly long time to word, so now I need to cook for the kids. Please don't presume my absence for a bit makes me an insincere poster.)
