Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My formerly estranged brother has transitioned and wants back in mine and my mother’s lives.

I will preface this with the fact that I do not believe that humans can change sex in any meaningful way and I find men appropriating the female experience profoundly offensive.

I have two toddlers and I don’t know how to move forward with this. My mother feels she has to accommodate his name/pronoun changes because she worries about his mental health and doesn’t want to be cut off, despite not buying in to the whole trans ideology.

I don’t know how to approach a discussion with him re his new identity and my personal beliefs and boundaries. I am not going to lie to my children and say he’s their Auntie or use his frankly ridiculous new name. I will not describe him or his female partner as lesbians.

For background his behaviour towards other family members in the past has been callous and personally I’m not too bothered if I ever have a close relationship with him again but it must be at least functional for my mother’s sake. Whether I like it or not he’s back in our lives and I have to navigate it. Advice or just any experience of the situation welcome.

I was going for more open and honest statement of my position rather than a dramatic showdown. The intention was clarity not trying to change his mind or attack his beliefs. As i’ve said i’m thinking this through for the first time and saying absolutely nothing is an attractive option.

But what did you expect from him?

I don’t even know him but from what you describe - massive drama ensued.

You have had no relationship with him for years so just keep at a distance and be civil

LowlandLucky · 14/10/2026 16:27

Why should you have him back in your life if he has been an obnoxious twunt in the past? Tell you mother that you are not in the sliightest bit interested in having any relationship with him. Remind her your feelings matter too and that she shouldn't be expecting you to whitewash the past.

GreyskySexRealistsky · 14/10/2026 16:26

Yes, do remember not to "squawk" OP

Summerstuff · 14/10/2026 16:18

Exactly

and having some kind of showdown with him is ridiculous. He’s not going to listen and take on board is be. Just drama and squawking.

Yes that does sound hard

its all very well who you have in your own home , but there will be family occasions that your mother would like both of you there

sorry nothing helpful other than I understand.

nicepotoftea · 14/10/2026 16:22

Is this not also a potential problem?

Nihongo · 14/10/2026 16:21

Sounds like he only wants involvement now so that he can bask in the validation of having you use his new ladyname etc etc.

I honestly wouldn’t bother with him, keep away from the drama. He hasn’t suddenly morphed into a wonderful person..

Summerstuff · 14/10/2026 16:19

You have toddlers and you have been estranged for years. So your kids have not even met him. Keep it like that.

nicepotoftea · 14/10/2026 16:19

As with any relationship, you can set your own boundaries, but he can also choose not to have a relationship with you.

Summerstuff · 14/10/2026 16:18

Whatshitnow · 14/10/2026 16:16

I'd be avoiding him like the plague. Wouldn't even entertain the suggestion of any "discussions" Your mum can make her own mind up. Don't get drawn into anything you don't want to. Keep your life calm and drama free.

You don't have to have a relationship with anyone you don't want to. You have no right to dictate who your mother has a relationship with. It's really that simple.

I’m not dictating anything, I support my mum. I was asking if anyone had experience of navigating a similar situation because it is not something I ever thought I’d experience. I concède my post isn’t super clear on this, my bad.

This is the very opposite of drama, providing she keeps her cool.

She's allowed to have boundaries and state them clearly.

No. The very opposite of drama is to be civil, not expose her children to him and just be there for her mother.

I felt stating where I stand with everything was what I needed to do to be upfront and clear from the get go.

drama drama drama. And so very unnecessary

Ok because your OP gave very much the impression you were going to go at this all guns blazing!

Edited

Yeah upon reflection it is not a good illustration of the nuance. I am still processing.

He wants to be friendly after years of no contact yes. I was not anticipating a positive reception but I felt stating where I stand with everything was what I needed to do to be upfront and clear from the get go. I’m coming round to the idea that this might not be necessary 🤷🏼‍♀️

You can be civil, sure, anything else would be stressful for your mother.

But you don’t need to have a pointless chat with him fGS about this and you don’t need to have your children around him!

Rimding · 14/10/2026 16:05

Summerstuff · 14/10/2026 15:25

He “wants” involvement with your children?

A callous man you have been estranged with.

Surely you just don’t allow it?

And you honestly think this “chat” would be well received? Massive drama. Just support your mum and leave it at that

Do you want involvement with your brother?
If so, you could explain your own beliefs and stick to the language you prefer or if not, explain to your mum you dont want contact with him and still support her to do as she wishes.
Its irrevelant to your decision what he wants.
I think why you were estranged in the first place is an important factor in this.

Summerstuff · 14/10/2026 16:01

And if you d been estranged - I very much doubt your kids are remotely bothered about having a relationship with your callous odd brother

Rimding · 14/10/2026 16:00

Onceuponatime32 · 14/10/2026 15:32

It’s irrelevant what he wants. You can support your mum without getting involved yourself.

This is very reasonable.
