I thought this was interesting:

BBC Factual and BBC Scotland announce J.K. Rowling (w/t), a two-part documentary series from Rogan Scotland …which traces Rowling’s dramatic rise, cultural influence and contested legacy, using her life as a lens through which to explore three decades of profound social, political and technological change.

I haven’t seen of those other Rogan Scotland documentaries mentioned in the article so no idea what the typical ‘tone’ is. Thoughts? The article makes it sound balanced.

Hmm - looks interesting. But the reliance on archive footage suggests they weren't able to secure an interview with her.

And I notice that though they mention her literary success, and her political interventions, they don't mention her very substantial philanthropic work.

nicepotoftea · 13/10/2026 13:46

Will be good if it has the same journalistic integrity as 'The Witch Trials of JK Rowling'.

It doesn't sound as though it has been made with her co-operation, so that will largely depend on who they interview.

CompleteGinasaur · 13/10/2026 13:49

"(H)er unflinching personal beliefs have sparked a fraught and divisive dialogue" doesn't exactly scream editorial impartiality..

Wishesandhorses · 13/10/2026 13:53

Two parts of activist whingeing?

She's a fascinating woman, her philanthropy and creativity are amazing, I hope she sues the pants off them if this is just going to indulge a lot of tantrumming, particularly since still no one has ever actually identified what it was she said. Supporting women's rights in law is only an act of evil to the utterly batshit.

Wishesandhorses · 13/10/2026 13:54

On reflection, I wonder if she'd care to fund a two part documentary on activist batshit?

Would prob be a lot more interesting.

It is a true statement though.

alcovecupboards · 13/10/2026 14:02

I doubt she'll speak. She only tends to speak to journalists who won't challenge her these days.

They can hardly sell it with the line "we found that she's not guilty of any of the stuff shes been accused of and is a lovely perspn who does loads for charity" , who'd watch that?

I did think that might be the findings, but in a ‘oh, but those poor men are still sad’ balance.

I thought this was interesting:

Drawing on rare archive, Rowling’s own words, and interviews from people who worked with her along the way, this documentary series captures the rise and impact of the prolific author. -

So are we going to see her essay and have thousands of people scratching their heads confused by all the fuss?

She has never spoken to many journalists, but she has been very open about her motivations and her views on different political issues.

'The Witch Trials of JK Rowling' included a variety of different voices, and I think it was fair.

nicepotoftea · 13/10/2026 14:57

The impasse tends to be that e.g. Alastair Campbell asks her on his podcast, but has no interest in speaking to more qualified women like FWS, so she feels like they are using her celebrity rather than engaging with the issue.

She's very rarely given any interviews. When the Harry Potter books were coming out she'd give about one interview every three years and reveal virtually nothing.

BBC Factual 😂, the bbc gave up on facts years ago. 😂

MarieDeGournay · 13/10/2026 16:08

'contested legacy'? It's a bit soon to talk about her 'legacy', she's still gigging isn't she? [I'm not sure because I don't read her books, but I think there was a new one published recently]
And by 'contested' they presumably mean - a whole bunch of people believe a load of groundless accusations about her.

I think a documentary on those people would be very interesting, like how they keep up such a level of ..I think hatred might be le mot juste - when the alleged justifications for their hatred is so easily refuted.

I hope the BBC documentary is fair and balanced Hmm

I think it will just piss people off regardless. TRAs will lose their minds at anything that doesn't portray her as an evil, far-right adjacent trans genocide enabler. They will be upset at the article because it acknowledges that some (I would say many) view her as a defender of women's rights. Over on Reddit, they are trying to comfort each other by saying she is a shit writer 😂. I mean, she has only sold about 600 million copies of her books.

Being optimistic, JKR is going to get thrust into the spotlight again when the new HP series comes out. I think there are a lot of people who have just blindly accepted the narrative that she is an evil bigot. The overton window has shifted in terms of gender identity v sex, so this documentary will hopefully show that there are different viewpoints in this debate, at the very least. And this will be the first time that some people will be exposed to alternative viewpoints to the TRA ones, which have been so dominant for the last ten years or so.

BBC Scotland risks wrath of JK Rowling with new documentary on 'polarising public figure'

It will draw on "rare archive, Rowling's own words, and interviews from people who worked with her along the way", although the programme makers don't appear to have spoken the 61-year-old herself.

Wishesandhorses · 13/10/2026 16:37

Isn't there a whole thread to moan about what JKR isn't sharing random opinions on?

I doubt she cares. The new Harry Potter series looks enchanting, the new Strike should come out at Christmas (fingers crossed) and she's chosen to quietly do purposeful things with her immense wealth for good rather than act as some kind of influencer. I doubt she cares much what a TRA says about her writing while she cracks on with enjoying her immense wealth. And good for her.

I also thought The Witch Trials of J K Rowling was handled very fairly. I learnt a lot about the rise/history of woke culture from that podcast - really interesting.

IwantToRetire · 13/10/2026 16:52

I cant believe that at a time when even the BBC itself, acknowledges that many women that the media constantly focuses on, are more likely than not to then be the subject of violent threats.

It is totally irresponsible to make it an issue based documentary but centre it on one women.

Its not as if TRAs aren't known for their violence.

I dont know if the idea originated at the BBC (the hate her enough) or this slick production company.

Unbelievable to depth to which the media will stoop, and those who feed off the cess pit.

Maybe all those Labour waste of spaces who are now droning on about stopping violence against women could step, particularly as this is the BBC.

zanahoria · 13/10/2026 16:53

The contested legacy stuff is obviously bullshit. The vast majority of people in this country and abroad actually agree with her and boycotts of her work have been pathetic failures.

I do actually think she will come out of this very well. Most of the anti-JKR stuff is rabid nonsense where she is framed as transphobe but the BBC will not be able to get away with that as they do have some responsibility for impartiality and they will be very worried about her lawyers.

If she is given even a half decent shout then most people will see that what she is saying is just common sense.

onlytherain · 13/10/2026 16:57

frenchnoodle · 13/10/2026 13:56

It is a true statement though.

Sparked makes it sound as if she caused it. That is not true.

TheGentleHelper · 13/10/2026 16:59

She has set trans rights back decades. I can't stand her.

AstonCanKissMyArse · 13/10/2026 17:00

polarising public figure

Its hardly her fault if a load of batshit muppets decide to completely misrepresent something moderate and reasonable that she's said, then continually stoke envious hatred against her.

Many men - off the top of my head, Richard Dawkins, Ricky Gervais and the Proclaimers lads say similar, but because they're men they don't get hounded with death and rape threats, nor held up as some kind of failed paragon of virtue.
