Teacher upset with my child questioning about trans child

sarahandsage · 09/10/2026 06:39

Was Called into school today.
My daughter has just started reception in September, it’s a lovely village school, and she’s made lots of friends and settled in really well.

Yesterday I was called into have chat with her teacher.
Was informed my child has a trans girl in her class, and that my child is questioning the teacher every day about this.
That all the other children accept this child was born in the wrong body, yet my daughter is questioning ‘too much’.

I said we encourage curiosity amongst our children, so am
not surprised.

The teacher then said that my child was taken to one side and read a couple of books :
My name is Jazz
and one about a crayon that feels like a different colour.
Which was astonishing to me, because really singling out a child to (as the teacher said ) “Get her on board”, feels very pushy.

My daughter is very kind, and plays with all the children in the class including the trans girl.
The teacher is not concerned with unkindness, but that my daughter is not accepting enough, and she has asked us to reiterate pronouns and that this child is a girl.

This is the first school experience for us, as previously my daughter was at a childminder

It feels very wrong to single out a child, and read books that introduce a concept that we haven’t broached with our children yet.

Wise words from @Axelotylbottle

I hope your daughter had a good day and if so that that reassures you @sarahandsage

I'm so sorry you're feeling nervous. That shouldn't be the case, you should feel your child will be safe in every way in school but your feelings are entirely reasonable in this situation. If this feeling persists I'd go back to the HT and explain you are feeling this way. Trust your gut on this, listen to your child (as you have done), your child's wellbeing is far too important to ignore these things.

It's unclear if the teacher is naive / hasn't properly completed safeguarding training (which is worrying but probably possible to change) or has an entrenched ideological position that she deems more important than following safeguarding guidance and behaving in an appropriately professional way following safeguarding guidance as it is her job to do. She's paid to follow KCSIE, if she's not doing that, she's in breach of her contract.

Far too many people have been allowed to ignore the law and safeguarding for far too long.

I would also be concerned that she is favouring the wants of one child over all the others (because said child fits some cause she wants to champion), she needs to be seen to be even handed and fair by parents and children to do her job effectively.

sarahandsage · 13/10/2026 11:42

Thank you for your replies.
Daughter has gone into school, and am hoping she has a great day.

Probably silly of me, but this is the most nervous I have felt since her first day.
Is it stupid to worry the teacher will treat her differently because we took it to the head ?

I am still reading some of your posts and there seem to be very divided opinions and strong feelings.

Regardless of anything political, I am a Mum who wants my child to be safe and happy.
Being in a class with a child that is experiencing gender questions (is this what it is called ?) is not my issue.
It is the adults around the situation that I expect to be responsive and responsible, for all the class wellbeing.

Posting the links again to the safeguarding and SRE / Health Ed guidance - all parents should be aware of this as it finally ensures child safeguarding is prioritised over the demands of transactivism.

I agree. I would also not automatically assume that the assurances that the head is giving OP necessarily translate to the reality of what happens in class and in the school in general.

We don't know how the head sees this: they could share the same concerns as the parents; they could be neutral/not really interested and just trying to 'keep the peace'; or they could be denouncing the parents as stupid bigots and worse, but wanting to stay out of trouble and not to have this escalated.

The good thing is that the new safeguarding guidance (KCSIE) and teaching about Sex Relationships guidance now massively restricts a school's ability to socially transition children or promote gender identity - especially primary schools. I've linked the guidance upthread. A Head who ignores this could find themselves in serious difficulty when the guidance is statutory.

I agree; however the books are being read and to whom, it is potentially problematic.
Teacher sounds like a zealot to me rather than out of their depth. Head sounds like they're firefighting, but does also sound clued up and sensible.

The teacher said the trans child speaks most days about being born a boy and that they are now a girl.
My husband asked if this is when our daughter asks questions, and the teacher confirmed that it was.

Hmmmm........ so this child goes on about the perceived new 'gender identity', and then your DD asks questions in response to that... but only one of them is supposedly obsessed about it and is told off for this?!?!

I get that the child is young, so when they're introduced to most things that seem new and exciting to them, and make them feel 'special', they will naturally talk endlessly about them; but even so, it's a surefire confirmation that somebody clearly isn't actually the new sex (or 'gender', whatever that is) that they claim to be, when they feel the need to keep on banging on about it, and probably trying to convince/gaslight themselves as well as others.

How many people do you meet - adults or children - whose main/sole topic of conversation is what sex they are, when they are not claiming to be anything other than their actual biological sex? They don't; it's just a boring, obvious fact - just like nobody goes on endlessly about the fact that they have the teeth, arms or knees that they've always had.

That's a great update. I would also request that the teacher NOT use any aspects of the "born in the wrong body' narrative at all, including not reading those books to anyone, and also reminding the class that "Child" didn't change bodies but just likes people to say he/they are a boy. The way that "Child" is phrasing it sounds like, if the teacher doesn't correct it, the children could think he's changed bodies.
As an aside, I read the crayon book and you can twist it either to say "a boy can feel like a girl on the outside" or "even if you change your clothes you're still the same child inside".

Quoting myself to correct "child likes people to say they are a girl".

Well done OP, that sounds like a good outcome and hope the head will now keep a close eye on this activist teacher.

HardyCrow · 12/10/2026 20:43

Nope it’s very simple. Geneticist here.

It's really not simple at all.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 13/10/2026 08:16

Excellent update, OP! At least you know that the school recognises your DD is doing nothing wrong and mustn’t be punished or reeducated. You’ve also highlighted a training need in the teacher.

Manyanamanyana · 13/10/2026 03:49

Lacksie · 12/10/2026 16:24

I'm not sure why you're struggling to understand the point I'm making. It's very simple.

Several posters were claiming that every individual has sex characteristics that can be unambiguously classified as exclusively male or female. That claim is false and oversimplistic.

Edited

Bit like trans ideology, false and oversimplistic. Good derail though.

JellySaurus · 11/10/2026 20:03

Adults, yes. But children? I remain extremely sceptical. Especially the idea that a child would have been affirmed in what was then recognised as a mental disorder or a paraphilia. Nope, not buying it.

Yeah, and Wikipedia is completely captured, so an extremely unreliable source on all things sex and gender. I agree with you.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/10/2026 22:51

Thanks OP. My guess is that's a teacher out of her depth, naively interfering in an issue that's way outside her expertise. Teachers are not experts in child sex change and that's why the national safeguarding guidance gives school very clear limits on how they should deal with this - especially in primary schools

You've done the school a favour by raising this as it seems the Head was unaware. Now the teacher gets support and advice and hopefully the parents of this confused child can be directed to appropriate child centred support that will help. And you've protected your child from unfair criticism.

Well done.

That’s a good update. It seems like the class teacher needs further training on this

sarahandsage · 12/10/2026 22:26

I have not read all of these messages, because some of them are going over my head.

Am giving an update ,even at the risk of being told my posts are 'fake', or that my daughter is a bully :(

We kept our daughter off school on Friday and today.

This morning husband and I had a meeting with the head, and the teacher.
The head was nice, but told us that she had not been informed of the situation until the end of last week.
We had a meeting with the head first, and she confirmed the schools policy is in line with government advice, and actually rather than using any pronouns, most faculty staff use the Childs name, but they don't use she/her.

We then had a meeting with the head and teacher, and the teacher was very vocal using the Childs desired pronouns.
When the head questioned this, the teacher said that the Childs parents have directly asked her to do so.

The teacher said the trans child speaks most days about being born a boy and that they are now a girl.
My husband asked if this is when our daughter asks questions, and the teacher confirmed that it was.
Head agreed with my husband that it is a natural reaction to be curious about a theme discussed in class.
Husband also asked is it appropriate/neccsesary for the child to be talking about this daily.

When we mentioned the books, the teacher claims I 'misunderstood' and said that the books were also read aloud to the class, the aim was to support the child, and the whole class.
Which really annoyed me, as I was made to understand that it was only my daughter that was being read to, and made an issue of.
English is my second language, but I don't see how I could have misunderstood this.

The head apologised and said that the teacher would be offered further training, and that our daughter will not be in trouble for asking questions.

The phrase ‘get her on board’ is chilling. I’d want a meeting with the head/governors asap.

No.

There is not one single human in the history of the species who has had two equally functioning reproductive systems and has been able to produce both gametes.

Agree

You are clearly confused by the use of the word 'Sex' - which relates to biology/is a biological category. This is what 'gender' ideology does to people. It makes them confused.

Or disingenuous

I actually don't think they are irrelevant at all. But either way it wasn't me who brought them up. I simply stepped in to correct the false claims/ assumptions about sex development and DSDs.

If you think DSDs are relevant, how are they relevant?
