Oxford City Council trans rights plan approved amid 'intimidation'

On October 5, the city council voted in favour of a motion which attempts to "ensure the rights, dignity and privacy of trans and non-binary residents of Oxford are supported to the maximum extent permitted by law" following an April 2025 Supreme Court judgement.

The ruling defined “sex” within the Equality Act as “biological sex” and “sex at birth” - since the ruling, the Equality and Human Rights Commission updated its guidance for enforcing the act.

The council has now passed a motion put forward by trans and non-binary councillors stating, “Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary,” and calling for new rights legislation, amid descriptions of fear and abuse faced by residents and representatives.

The proposal aims to ensure access to council toilets and leisure facilities in line with self-identification.

Most of you on this thread don’t live in Oxford. I appreciate your concern, but I’m glad that the councillors I voted for are trying to protect my trans friends and loved ones. That’s the bottom line for me really.

But not girls or women. Got it.

Poor Dom. 🙁

For the record, the toilets here are no more dangerous than they ever were.

Sadly, it seems Dom would disagree with you. They has been kind of verbally harassed.

Maybe they should stay out of womens’ spaces, given that they is clearly male, despite the scarlet nail polish.

@nicepotoftea perhaps completely enclosed toilets ARE dangerous. Though sexual assaults in Oxford have occurred in lots of other spaces as well, like churchyards 😢

But I don’t see people on this thread complaining about enclosed toilets. I see them complaining due to what I perceive as a weird, ungrounded fear of toilets being shared by people with different gender identities.

Edited

There are countless threads on MN discussing the dangers of completely enclosed toilets.

'trans' inclusive feminist - the things idle minds invent to amuse themselves. 🤣🤣🤣
Sad times.

I repeat, toilets should be safe for everyone. It’s not complicated.

Sorry, the women's toilets are not a cosy little club for males who can't hack it in the gents'. If they don't feel safe in the gents they can either campaign for their own spaces or educate the gents to be more accepting of members of their own sex who present differently.

But I suppose that's too much like hard work. Far easier to bully and guilt-trip women into ignoring their own discomfort and the potential risks of allowing men to colonise their spaces.

Look, I know what the MN 'feminist' threads are like. I don't expect most people here to agree with me.

I'm just articulating the perspective of a feminist, politically-engaged Oxford local who is not remotely bothered about toilets, and who is happy to have Max Morris as her representative.

For those of you who are really bothered about toilets, there was a horrible recent case of a rapist dragging a woman into a disabled toilet in the Oxford M&S, and sexually assaulting her. Should we just get rid of all disabled toilets I wonder?

Obviously the rapist was not disabled.

We need to focus on stopping crime, not on labelling toilets. The sign on the toilet door is not the issue here.

Saying 'I'm not remotely concerned about toilets' just suggests a lack of empathy and isn't an argument.

No, but this does demonstrate why toilets that are completely enclosed are dangerous. Do you not think that it would be a good idea to engage with this?

Farage isn't my cup of tea, but I really think you might have a lot in common with him.

As a local Oxford resident I'm concerned about issues like the following

  • my DC being able to cycle to school safely
  • local indie businesses being supported
  • green/eco policies
  • minorities like ethnic minorities and trans people feeling like they can lead their lives in peace, without being intimidated

Issues I'm not concerned about

  • Prince Harry's DC being caught in traffic like everyone else
  • transphobes unhappy at the prospect of seeing someone who doesn't look like them in a toilet
  • the Raise the Colours people who don't actually come from Oxford but want to hang their flags on public highways around here

Like I said, it's not complicated.

And you certainly have a right to be concerned about those issues.

A man?

If you want to argue for mixed sex toilets, go ahead and do that and find evidence to support your case. Arguing that women who don't want mixed sex toilets are just transphobic is not a winning argument. I suspect that people who make it just aren't that interested in anyone's rights.

And can you really not see the irony in asserting 'live and let live' - and then listing all the people that 'we' (the Royal we? ) don't want to be allowed to even speak?

I've been to book launches and lectures in Oxford which have been disrupted by TRAs. Yes, I felt scared - there were threatening men screaming outside the venue (the poor oppressed trans women that the council are falling over themselves to appease). Of course, the police did nothing.

Oxford- the city where debate is cancelled.

is petty much 'I'll do whatever the fuck I like, and damn the consequences' isn't it?

I'll say it again. Farage really is their man.

Sorry but in all my decades of living in Oxford I’ve never had an issue with toilets. I don’t understand the fixation.

In the words of the immortal Dolly Parton, ‘I just know it I have to pee I’m gonna pee.’

If criminal behaviour happens in any toilet, it needs to be reported.

To who? How? Using what evidence?

I wish everyone happy peeing experiences in Oxford. For the record, the toilets here are no more dangerous than they ever were.

Admittedly peeing might have been particularly dodgy in the 1640s when Charles I was holed up here and the city was under siege.

And it's been explained to you a zillion times what the best toilet arrangements are to make everyone as safe as possible. It wasn't complicated. Until councils and other orgs took it upon themselves to change loos around.

Actually, making toilets safe is quite complicated.

nicepotoftea · 09/10/2026 18:15

The loos should be a safe space for everyone including trans people

Toilets are locked rooms that can only have limited supervision.

There is always a trade off between privacy and safety and toilets in some places can be very unsafe.

Currently one of the ways that safety is achieved is by leaving a gap at the bottom of the door to check whether something concerning is happening. However, many women don't want men to have this kind of access when they are using a toilet.

This is the kind of detail that councils should be considering, but instead they waste time on platitudes.

People like Nigel Farage and Kellie-Jay Keen can come and spout their rhetoric of hatred here, but for most of us, that’s not going to go down well. It’s not the kind of city we are.

Max Morris and Rosie Rawle and Emily Kerr and Layla Moran are some of the people who have Oxford’s backs, and I’m grateful to them.

The many trans and enby people I’ve come across in Oxford have never ever made me feel threatened.

I love my city.

If you think that facilities like toilets should be mixed sex, you should certainly campaign for that. You should however consider that there is no way to judge somebody else's identity, so the question is not whether you consider trans or enby people to be a threat, but whether you want facilities to be mixed sex.

Of course the primary goal of the Equality Act is to protect against unlawful discrimination, and if you want to get rid of the legal concept of sex discrimination, then Farage is your man.

Are you daft? What my daughter found threatening wasn't "those ideals" but the physical presence of rowdy males in the women's loos, in combination with twee little signs telling her not to challenge anyone as their gender identity was their own business.

People like you helped to make her university experience more difficult.

No one should be being ‘rowdy’ or misbehaving in the loos. Did your daughter report this behaviour to the relevant college/university authorities? I’m sure they would want to take appropriate measures against it.

PuppySnores · 09/10/2026 17:55

oxfordfeminist · 09/10/2026 17:37

Well yes, I live in Oxford and I’m a trans-inclusive feminist and a mum.

Oxford is known for its multiculturalism, diversity and inclusivity, and I’m proud of that.

If people find those ideals threatening, that’s their problem. Live and let live.
