Oxford City Council trans rights plan approved amid 'intimidation'

On October 5, the city council voted in favour of a motion which attempts to "ensure the rights, dignity and privacy of trans and non-binary residents of Oxford are supported to the maximum extent permitted by law" following an April 2025 Supreme Court judgement.

The ruling defined “sex” within the Equality Act as “biological sex” and “sex at birth” - since the ruling, the Equality and Human Rights Commission updated its guidance for enforcing the act.

The council has now passed a motion put forward by trans and non-binary councillors stating, “Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary,” and calling for new rights legislation, amid descriptions of fear and abuse faced by residents and representatives.

The proposal aims to ensure access to council toilets and leisure facilities in line with self-identification.

I live in Oxfordshire and go into to Oxford every week. To boost my credentials, I am also a mum and a die hard radical feminist, who cares passionately about a whole range of typically “progressive” issues. My two young sons who fully understand that they are male even if they are wearing a dress can hopefully attest to my comfort with gender non conformity. And I am very much not happy about sharing communal spaces with men not matter how they dress. I wasn’t when I was at university when it was quietly being introduced without scrutiny, and am especially not now, after “educated myself”.

Most of you on this thread don’t live in Oxford. I appreciate your concern, but I’m glad that the councillors I voted for are trying to protect my trans friends and loved ones. That’s the bottom line for me really.

Oh is THAT what they're doing?
Not a load of utterly pointless virtue signalling then?

I repeat, toilets should be safe for everyone. It’s not complicated.

Nobody is ever safe.

Making sure that there are single SEX spaces, not safe spaces, is a key measure to improving female safety by keeping men, however they identify, out of female single sex spaces.

Luckily a council cannot just have their own laws, so they have worded this carefully enough to be able to be sued if they do not provide single sex spaces where legally required to do so.

If you are happy with the council spending money on illegal provision, and then again on having to pay out compensation to people who take them to court then that's your decision to make.

Wouldn't it be better for you to concentrate campaigning on making male single sex spaces for males who identify as, er, whatever?

You could have a Pee Next To Me t-shirt or take your buddies into the gents with you.

The motion states that “biological sex” and “sex at birth” are phrases which “don’t have agreed medical or scientific meanings and there is no agreed identification to substantiate them, other than self-identification”.

This is malarkey, if not an outright fabrication, lying is clearly the new norm and anyone in Oxford who is happy to have a Council full of uneducated lying buffoons, needs their head read.
What the hell are they putting in the water in Oxford?

That is why there are so many stray cats in Oxford and the dairy industry struggles throughout Oxfordshire. Nobody can tell the difference between males and females. It’s a real problem.

If you're ok with them making up their own laws, defying the Supreme Court and declaring independence from the UK then you'll be fine visiting our town which has made being a trans ally illegal with a minimum 5 years in prison during which they must wear a pointy yellow hat.

If they can make up laws so can we.

So your primary concern is whether a policy benefits your friends. Again you really should give Farage a chance.

However talk is cheap and the councillors don't actually seem to be doing anything.

I pointed this out about trans pandering women on another thread, I find that they’re only really bothered about them and their mates, despite their sanctimonious tone.

The loos should be a safe space for everyone including trans people

Exactly that’s why TIF should use the women’s and TIMs the men’s. If TIM claim they are “unsafe” in male spaces, they need to take it up with men. If TIM are not safe in male spaces, surely YIF would be even more unsafe, unless you’re going to claim that they all pass so well no one ever knows they’re not men 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's a well documented phenomenon where? seen the world over and also reflected in things like the brexit vote, that those places with the lowest levels of non white population are directly correlated with the highest levels of irrational fear (racism).

As you seem to be linking low levels of non-white population and 'high levels of irrational fear (racism)’ with support for Brexit and Reform this does not explain

Bradford: 32% Asian/ Asian British
Brexit vote: 54% leave
Bradford Council: no overall control with Reform the largest party

Oldham: 27% Asian/ Asian British
Brexit vote: 61% leave
Bradford Council: no overall control with Reform the second largest party

See also Walsall, Dudley, Burnley, Bolton…

You are simply wrong on that.

There are, or course also several places that are ethnically mixed, voted to Remain and where Reform support is low, like Oxford and Leicester. Maybe this is because this is quite complex and several other factors such as levels of prosperity might also be a factor?

No ethnicity is free from grooming gangs but it's strangely much less newsworthy when they're run by white people; not that our media is racist or anything...

Baroness Casey, in her review, stated that ”flawed data" had often been used to "dismiss claims about 'Asian grooming gangs' as sensationalised, biased or untrue”, claims most child sexual abuse offenders were white was "at best misleading" and that where the ethnicity of the offenders of this type of crime was recorded, British Pakistani men were disproportionately represented among the perpetrators.

The 21 Oxford men convicted of child grooming offences were all of either Pakistani or North African heritage.

If you don’t know any trans people personally, that might explain your reluctance to show empathy… I’m just saying.

It was quite similar for our parents’ generation when it came to gay people.

There’s something called contact effect. If you know members of a minority group, you’re less likely to see them as a threat. Eg Oxford is has lots of immigrants, and is quite pro-immigrant. Whereas a lot of Farage’s support comes from regions where there aren’t a lot of minority ethnicities in the community.

This is incredibly patronising. You really think jone of us have met any trans people?

The issue with men in women's spaces isn't that we just haven't met the right man in women's clothes yet.

It's nothing like being gay. Two men want to go to bed together or get married it makes no difference to me at all. Doesn't affect me in the slightest. They want to come in my spaces and sports and alter the meaning of words and compel speech - very much affects me.

Umm, except for the small matter of the Oxford grooming gang; Asian men who raped, abused and trafficked what is estimated to be hundreds of girls? And what about the England flags being flown round Headington roundabout last year? Oxford has the same racial tensions as anywhere else.

Whereas a lot of Farage’s support comes from regions where there aren’t a lot of minority ethnicities in the community.

Much of Reform’s support comes from towns and regions where there are high numbers of immigrants and ethnic minotities. That’s exactly why he’s getting support.

Edited

Mr "I'm about to get a lot of convictions" from the West Midlands and his paid "mates" putting up flags says nothing about their popularity. No ethnicity is free from grooming gangs but it's strangely much less newsworthy when they're run by white people; not that our media is racist or anything...

Look, I'm posting in good faith. Nowhere did I make a sweeping statement about 'everyone hating trans people'. 🙄But hey, accuracy isn't as striking as hyperbole.

nicepotoftea's digs about Farage and me just seem like, well, pointless digs, because I explicitly said I'm not a fan of Farage.

My aims in posting on this thread are modest. As I said, I'm not expecting people on this forum to agree with me. I just wanted to say that some of us who live in Oxford are happy that our councillors are doing precisely what we elected them to do.

Trans people are welcome here.

I'm just going by what you are posting.

it's an anonymous forum so I have no idea whether you have even been to Oxford.

However, I can see from your posts that you aren't actually engaging with any of the issues that need to be considered if you want to be more inclusive to people who are excluded by single sex services.

As I said, I'm not expecting people on this forum to agree with me

Quite difficult given that you haven't presented any relevant arguments.

For women who want single sex services, the problem is not trans people, it is men. If you can't engage with that, you really aren't making a good faith argument.

The "appropriate" response, in this case, is the likely banning of the person that complained as they would have 'transphobic' views.

Of those that I have seen the least inclusive people have been the TRAs and trans lobby and the forcing of their agenda on to everyone else.

We really haven't moved that far forward from the initial trans lobby rallying cries of #NoDebate.

If you genuinely cared about trans people you would be more interested in practicalities and less interested in fantasies about everyone hating trans people.

The question is not whether trans people are a threat, but whether men are a threat and whether women should be able to have boundaries that exclude men.

But then I think you know that. You just don't seem quite interested enough in anyone's rights to engage with the issues.

Heggettypeg · 09/10/2026 19:57

Toilets ... it's so easy to make them sound trivial, isn't it?
Unfortunately, in this context, they're the inch, and we've now seen (all too clearly) the shape of the mile.
Nurses punished for refusing to change in front of a man.
"No debate" and academics hounded out of their jobs for daring to believe that sex is real and matters in some situations.
Lesbians unable to meet openly without being harassed to include straight men.
Male criminals, including sex offenders, housed in women's prisons..
Rape victims refused genuinely single sex support and counselling.
Women raped on hospital wards, both because a man has been allowed to identify as a woman, and because a woman identifying as a man has been placed on a secure ward with men.
Children and young people embarking on a life of medication, self- mutilation and vain attempts to.control how others see them.
Oh brave new world.

I’m glad Oxford City Council can afford to spend local tax payers’ money on special toilets for people like poor Dom so they doesn’t have to go through the trauma of being ‘kind of harassed’.

Poor Dom. 🙁

For the record, the toilets here are no more dangerous than they ever were.

Sadly, it seems Dom would disagree with you. They has been kind of verbally harassed.

Maybe they should stay out of womens’ spaces, given that they is clearly male, despite the scarlet nail polish.

Oh gosh good point! Clearly the public toilets are not as safe for trans people as they were. Which makes this motion by the city council all the more important ❤️
