So the ‘formal re-education’ begins

I don’t know if anyone has been following this with Jordan Peterson but he has been ordered to undergo a self funded Re-education program in Canada, having lost a recent court case.

I have a feeling he isn’t well liked on here but I actually really like him. I’ve listened to many hours of his lectures and I don’t believe he is a misogynist - I think that’s the accusation that makes him a MN hate figure.

Anyhow I thought I’d include a link to the story if anyone is interested

Canadian Court Orders Jordan Peterson to Take Re-education Program

In January of this year, best-selling author Jordan Peterson was told by Canada’s College of Psychologists of Ontario to undergo re-education therapy for his very public statements, not on professional psychology and science, but politics and culture.

Never heard of the man but having spent last 20 mins reading various articles online by him and about him

I do think there is an issue of free speech here that Canada court is bordering on but also

He sounds like an almighty prick and hope I never hear of him again

Clymene · 03/09/2023 18:38

Kd Lang!

I really liked the interview that Helen Joyce gave to BAR when she talked about her conversation with Peterson.

I don't like him very much but I'm horrified he's being silenced.

Cannot deny, lol. Guy first, Rush fan second.

He did a podcast ( I think, not sure what qualifies as podcast v video) with Russel brand. Jesus, it was brilliant, but I had to rewind often and keep a dictionary nearby.

I know - he and Douglas Murray both make you work hard to keep up with them. I find either of them joyful to listen to for this reason. It's always an education.

I’m a fan too - I really enjoy his interviews and they often make me think about things in a totally different way. I listened to him talking to Douglas Murray recently and I found it so entertaining

He talked about watching the collapse of the first democratic country in the interview I watched. Man it’s so depressing.

Ancient Greece collapsed in 146BC, I don't think he watched it!

FotF isn't any kind of news reporting organisation tho Alison, left, right, or upside-bloody-down. They're an obscenely powerful and influential American fundamentalist Protestant church which campaigns against abortion rights, funds "crisis pregnancy centres", lobbies politicians at the highest levels, and preaches that being gay is due to satanic influence, pretending to be a news site. It's not a right-wing news site, or a Christian news site, or any other kind of news site from a different perspective, which I have every confidence in all MNers being capable of reading and critically appraising in that context. It's a church. But I suspected that most people wouldn't be familiar with the fact that they're actually a church, and a particularly nasty and powerful one, because that's not clear on their site.

So?

No matter how nasty, or against your personal aims and objectives, are they not entitled to publish their thoughts on the matter without a 'warning' popping up just in case feminists catch something from reading their words?

Definitely unfair to group all Canadians together.

Good thing I didn’t then. I qualified by drawing back what I said, to MY friends, not all Canadians.

See it’s this constant need to tell everyone off (scold?) for not clarifying every thought they have in a way that the individual listener/reader/viewer approves of. It’s all so tiresome and draining. No wonder people just withdraw entirely from any discussion.

Boiledbeetle · 03/09/2023 18:06

I mean so far, he is one of the most famous Canadians on the planet.

Im trying to think of more famous Canadians without googling and all I've got is Celine Dion and Michael J Fox

Jordan Peterson waving his receipts: Big mistake. Big. Huge!

I think this might be a very good thing. Jordan Peterson exposing the content of the court ordered “re-education program” to all his followers might help some ordinary Canadians finally wake the fuck up. Fingers crossed for powerful sunlight.🤞

lets hope it shines some much needed sunlight onto the situation in Canada!

turbonerd · 03/09/2023 17:22

I haven’t clicked on the link, but I am very excited about the prospect of Jordan Peterson sharing publicly what he has to learn and - erh internalise - on this re-education course.
Let the crazy commence!!

I was told over and over by certain sections of msm that JP, or is it Peter Jordanson? My short term memory is shot due to lack of sleep, but I know his face 😄
Anyway, I was told he was a total douchebag and raving misogynist. And then I decided I had to listen and watch him to hear what all the fuss was about. Aaaand I found him reasonable, intelligent and articulate. I like this guy.

DivingForLove · 03/09/2023 17:17

@off I agree 😢

I like him too OP. I think he’s been treated horribly. One of the first high profile pundits that I can recall having to endure the “cancellation” process. Was surprising and new at the time so I accepted that he must be a real AH and to my shame didn’t look into why he was being dragged so hard. Canada is a lost country though, absolutely crazy what’s happening there and I am baffled by Canadians response to it. My Canadian friends are very quiet and refrain from pushing anything that could be perceived as critical on SM. Makes me wonder if they’re frightened?

I've got relatives in BC who regular post anti-woke memes on Facebook. Definitely unfair to group all Canadians together. I think doing that in Canada is braver than in doing it in the UK given how far gone it is, and yet they still do it.

I like the idea of a Woke Scold’s Bridle festooned with rainbow flags.

On that subject did anyone see the article yesterday about Yorkshire police trying to re-educate a retired 70+ Social Worker after she took a photo of a sticker highlighting the need for single sex spaces that had been placed on a poster promoting transpride?

Could be available in The Guardian too. I’ll go check.

It's all over the local website, huge amount of anger:

Interesting to read that about Focus on The Family and fair enough. But my own opinion of JP has come from listening to what he says usually on Spotify podcasts. He is an exceptional speaker, listener, and an interesting psychological explorer. He draws stuff back to scripture because that's his bag, but he is willing to disucss properly with those who hold an opposing view. He is an important voice at the moment. I would recommend people listen to him first hand rather than via a media outlet, that will inevitably attract criticism. The fact that he is forced to lose his license or be re-educated is chilling.

off · 03/09/2023 16:56

It was a heads-up, not an accusation. They're not well-known in the UK, and even though I know the name, I didn't notice it in the URL and clicked through to the site, which also doesn't exactly shout about who's behind it. Sneaky fuckers.

Thanks for the additional links.

I'm really usually not one for making this sort of post, as I realise how limited and often slightly distasteful the media outlets which are willing to publish this kind of thing can sometimes be.

But Focus on the Family are a viciously homophobic, transphobic, anti-abortion, anti-science, anti-evolution, misogynistic, fundamentalist evangelical church, whose malign influence has been actively making the world a sadder, nastier place for decades.

See this is the problem right here.

This scolding for using the wrong news reporting to highlight a story, when 'approved' sources won't touch them, in case they get sent to reeducation camps for wrong think is the whole fucking crux of the issue.

Of course someone will woke scold anyone posting any links to the story. They will all be wrong thinkers in some way or other.
