I suspect it is leveraging an exaggeration to portray the book as being so completely acceptable that mothers wearing hijabs and dressing daughters in hijabs support the book indirectly by supporting pride. It is saying ‘look just who is so fully supportive! Who are YOU to not be fully supportive?’ It is very dishonest rather than wonderfully optimistic because of all the other messaging in the illustrations.

Christ, I wouldn’t be looking forward to World Book Day if I worked there.

Sadly there is a copy at my local library...I will be sending in a complaint.. I am going to go in and see if I can find it

I live in South east Asia, have wide circle of muslim friends and have attended Singapore's Pride equivalent, Pink Dot and can tell you that it is highly unlikely. It has happened with a few isolated individuals but it is controversial within the community and called out when it does.

And the muslims here are much more liberal than the the variety you get in the UK. Traditional Malay norms are more relaxed towards homosexuality and trans women than Islamic norms.

I've just had a look at the Birmingham libraries online catalogue for this book and there IS a copy in Kingstanding library in the childrens section. I don't want books banned or put in a 'special storage' area as per Helen Joyce & Kathleen Stock books etc but surely this shouldn't be on display or available for small children to borrow?!

I don't know whether it's worth emailing the library...not sure as to the extent of capture in Birmingham.

thing is, if i was a gay guy i would actually be really annoyed at being percieved as someone who goes around in bondage or " funky" sexual outfits. Yes some people do but its very rare to see someone wearing bondage gear outside of the bedroom!!

Gay men are the same as any straight person!!! They just love Men instead of woman!! Why are they being shown as differentely dressed or Overly sexual ?? Apparently a family where the female people wearing hijabs from a very young age will be very supportive of everyone at the pride march and take part in the parade. I have basic knowledge about the cultural mores for Muslim women, is this likely?

Or is this not likely and is a male storyteller attempting to exaggerate the degree of acceptance of LGBT people within a community ? I am not doubting that many Muslim people are accepting, I am questioning if someone who dresses a very small child in a hijab would be in the parade.

It was a huge red flag and I would never trust a pre school who had the book.

If it is a realistic depiction of Pride events, then it is clear that Pride is highly unsuitable for children. Btw, was that a hijabi lurking in one of the illustrations? Does the local mosque send a contingent to Pride?

The publisher's quote is horrendous. Isn't it homophobic to push the idea that this is a feature of gay relationships or relationships that gay people want kids to see as a matter of course (it might be a feature of Pride, but that's why there are separate family events)?

The author uses they/them pronouns apparently.And I really don't understand why more people aren't up in arms about this. NONE of this is age appropriate.

Yes, I was on the original thread which had a lot of detail from the book pointed out as inappropriate. The whole books is packed full of imagery and coded messages. Dodgy as fuck on every level. Good on the parents.

There's just been a heated discussion about this on GB News. Was reading something so not really listening but the presenter was outraged and the guest was defending it as a beautiful story.
