About to see the show they tried to cancel. Joanna Cherry. Body and bag searched. Slightly stroppy woman sporting a rainbow scarf getting people seated. Police. Extra security (100% men with beards). Show doesn't start for 30 minutes. Bar closed and troublesome women assembled.

Well he would deny it. Funny how their feelings are all important and denying those feelz makes them suicidal but JCs feelings are just dismissed. If she felt hostility then the decent thing to have been said was "I'm sorry she felt that way" not a "Oh no she didn't!" 🙄

What, stupidity?

That'd be the one.

It is clear that Ms. Black has a protected characteristic that Ms. Cherry doesn't.

What, stupidity?

ArabeIIaScott · 11/08/2023 14:51

Sorry, meant to c&P the tweet:

'"Nicola Sturgeon and I don't speak. Nicola branded me a transphobe with her broom cupboard broadcast. I feel she put a target on my back and I'm very unhappy about that" Well done@joannaccherry
for calling Sturgeon out'

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/08/2023 11:50

I'm sure counsellors were already standing by, @BezMills

BezMills · 11/08/2023 10:51

yeah maybe they can go and get trauma counselling for being exposed to such an unsafe space and having to deal with such a dangerous person. Definite Health and Safety issue.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/08/2023 10:46

The look on the face of the staff member handing over the mike for questions could “have put tatties aff the bile “
That’s Scottish for “If looks could kill “

Oh dear Grin

AnneKipankitoo · 11/08/2023 09:37

I went to the event. I got a ticket at the last minute from someone who couldn’t go.
I deliberately chose not to wear any suffrage colours.
Joanna is calm, reasoned, and factual.
The audience was receptive of course.

Thank God for the lesbians!

Ramblingnamechanger · 11/08/2023 00:49

I noticed on the C4 report many women wearing feminist clothes and carrying women won’t weesht placards, and cheers were great to hear for Joanna. I was not impressed by NS s proclamation that feminist and violence to women is the most important thing to her, when teamed with blather about the most marginalised and vulnerable..

IwantToRetire · 11/08/2023 00:20

There was a C4 news report about this, very much playing down any suggestion of MB having been insulting the previous day, and trying to make it was just normal Edinburgh fringe to have opposing opinions being aired.

Short section showing people arriving at the event with some very clear pictures of women wearing t-shirts saying Women Wont Wheesht and one short interviews!

Nothing about staff behaving badly.

Then much more lengthy coveraged of Nicola Sturgeon being interviewed with emphasise of huge rounds of applause any time she said anything.

Then a report about a women doing a show about being bought up by her mother and a trans woman (father) showing that the trans issue isn't so awful and people can makes jokes and be positive.

And a busker saying being trans was no big thing.

So the context was that Joanne Cherry and crowd were being over dramatic and everyone else was just getting on with having a good time, ie nothing to see here, move along.

Made possible by not mention the insults by MB.

Well it was C4 news.

Goodviibrations · 10/08/2023 19:32

No wonder they insist on no debate when you compare Cherry's clear commentary to the recent remarks made by intellectual heavyweight Mhairi B.

Backstreets · 10/08/2023 19:00

Grande Joanna! 👏 Glad to hear the event was a success.

Cismyfatarse · 10/08/2023 17:05

I didn't see the projected sign and gather it was onto the back wall behind the back row of seats. We were very near the smoke machine which smelled of smoke machine but it could easily have been mistaken for a fire by audience members. Security went looking behind the stage but it must have been being operated from elsewhere.

She was magnificent. So clear and principled. I do not support independents but with her in charge I would be much more tempted. Great moment after when she hugged Joanne Lamont. Loads of rock stars there too. MBM, Shereen Benjamin, Kate from LGB Alliance. Media scrum outside after but she had huge support on the steps as she came out.

Very supportive audience.

I loved her opening line where she thanked all the venue staff wearing rainbow scarves and lanyards for honouring a lesbian. JC was wearing a rainbow necklace too.

She was crystal clear about why she supports sex in terms of being single sex attracted, not gender. She spoke about the importance of lesbian spaces. Also, being discriminated against as a feminist, a lesbian and a Catholic when she was first looking for a legal career.

She wanted open debate about issues (trans / independence etc) and was scathing about no debate. She abhorred, but didn't name, the previous FM and Blackford and clearly had no support. Stephen Flynn is happy for her to disagree and vote her conscience on these matters.

She didn't mention how Flynn can have Mhairi Black in his team but it was clearly implied in her desire for debate.

Loads of questions. All of them supportive. When the others were offered the chance to ask a question they said they were "not comfortable." I suppose it would be hard to represent the trans activists in a room so supportive of JC.

The event is already causing headlines:

Joanna Cherry says Bute House Agreement with ‘totalitarian’ Scottish Greens should be brought to an end
https://www.holyrood.com/news/view,joanna-cherry-says-bute-house-agreement-with-totalitarian-scottish-greens-should-be-brought-to-an-end

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/joanna-cherry-claims-snp-criticism-30675008

Cherry also responded to Black who said the lives of transgender people should not be up for “intellectual” debate:
“I saw my colleague Mhairi Black saying she doesn't want an intellectual debate on this. I'm very happy to have an intellectual debate because that's what I am paid to do.”
She added: “If politicians can't cope with nuance, if politicians don't want intellectual debate, they're in the wrong job.”

No mention of the stunt so far in press reports actually interested in what Cherry said and her discussion of what is going on in Scottish Politics regarding the Greens and women's rights.

In exactly the same venue a few days ago Mhairi Black called women expressing opinions Karens and suggested they were allied to the far right. Yet Black's show didn't need enhanced security. No one disrupted her event people just rightfully complained about it afterwards.

No-one has been found guilty of sending Black dangerous threats which Joanna Cherry has had to put up with.

However, the TRAs are doing a great job of sabotaging their own cause because they are afraid to talk because what they say makes no sense. Cherry's event has attracted huge extra publicity because of the extra security needed.

Fukuraptor · 10/08/2023 16:18

Though it seems like the bigots in the staff rigged a stunt they projected the words Protect Trans Kids on the stage afterwards.

Phew! I'm glad they agree with Cherry and other campaigners who don't want trans identifying children being used as medical guinea pigs and put on a road to sterility, sexual dysfunction and having healthy body parts surgically removed.

Glad we're getting some common ground at last.

Wait, you don't think that's what they meant? 🤔

TheGreatATuin · 10/08/2023 15:45

Not surprised about the staff at all. If they had any argument against Joanna Cherry's position, they'd make it. The TRA position, the stuff that they are defending, is simply indefensible. They have absolutely no valid argument against anything Cherry says.
Their only choice is to go on the attack and try keep her quiet.
It's occurred to me that the GC side is constantly sharing TRA screenshots, articles, videos. We know that we need to do to persuade people to our side is share what trans activists are actually saying, but trans activists are the complete opposite. They're desperate for us not to be heard.
If what Cherry says is so terrible, they'd be broadcasting her direct words from the rooftops so people would know how awful it was. Just like we do with them.

Backstreets · 10/08/2023 15:42

Hope they trip on their goofy scarves.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/08/2023 15:39

They're sore, I imagine, because they lost in their bid to prevent the event going ahead.
