And he seems to be enjoying it!

Glad he took all recognisable features out of the photo. So another restaurant doesn’t get vandalised by TRAs.

DT’s 100m would have placed him 4th in the decathlon 100m in Tokyo.

Igneococcus · 05/08/2023 08:08

I wonder how the javelin results of today's top 100m runners would compare to DT's best javelin results, or their 1500 m times, or their discus results. You can't compare individual disciplines to the decathlon.
I'm not British and I watched a lot of athletics and the athletes from this time that people, even the non-Brits or non-US, remember are Carl Lewis and Daley Thompson and possibly Ed Moses (but that might just be me, I had a bit of a crush) and Mike Powell, mostly because of the epic showdown in the long jump final when both Powell and Lewis broke Bob Beamon's record.
I don't think there is any doubt over DT's greatness as an athlete.

That 100m time of 10.45 would put him as 35th on the 2023 season's best so far for UK 100m sprinters. Don't know if that says more about DTs greatness or the current dearth of UK talent bar the top one or two.

But how does it compare to today's Decathletes?
You can't compare a decathlete who competes in 10 disciplines, to an out and out sprinter. They are carrying more upper body muscle, needed for pole vault and the throwing events, that a sprinter just doesn't need.

I've just learned his mother was from was from Dundee!

She's only human. I'd've been professing my undying lust love to him.

SequentialAnalyst · 04/08/2023 22:37

BTW Princess Anne was 33 at the time. I'm pretty sure they were flirting...

And still faster than any woman has run in human history.

Daley was such a magnificent athlete and competitor, definitely one of my sporting heroes. At his peak, his rivals knew they couldn’t touch him before the competition even started. I remember as a kid sitting up late into the night watching him win gold at the LA Olympics in 84. The result was never in doubt.

Daley rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way, because British athletes were supposed to be fallible, self-effacing, humble & modest, but he was perceived as being cocky & arrogant. Largely because he was cocky & arrogant. He knew he was the best and behaved accordingly. It’s great that he is now prepared to publicly support women’s sport, and it’s great that women are now winning the argument.

So in your view is a Transwoman a man or a woman?

What's "transphobic" about not wanting males competing in women's sport?

royalwatch · 04/08/2023 20:51

Oh dear. He's not the sort of advocate women need though

DoIWantToGetIntoThisHere · 04/08/2023 19:59

God I don’t remember that T-shirt 😱shockingly homophobic and I hope he’s thoroughly ashamed of himself now. I just had to look up the background to it - seems Carl Lewis was accused of being gay because he was softly spoken and had a stylish haircut?! Thank fuck things have moved on but undoubtedly homophobia still exists in lots of sport. I’d hope that Daley Thompson would apologise for this if he was questioned about it now.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 04/08/2023 19:45

I'll leave this here.

I didn't know he ever participated in the relay race?

Great reply, got nowt better? No, thought not!

popebishop · 04/08/2023 17:31

^ homophobic, that should say. But it's also transphobic when people think sexed bodies have something to do with genders. Or when they say they don't - it's very unclear.

popebishop · 04/08/2023 17:30

Trans ideology is hugely transphobic - I thought everyone knew that?

Bit embarrassing for those that haven't cottoned on yet that saying 'same-sex attraction is akin to racism' isn't a great look...

I love him even more now. Him and Tom Selleck

SnakeBasket · 04/08/2023 17:13

My nan and Daley Thompson's mum were best friends! They met in Holloway 😳 His mum was a legend around Ladbroke Grove and a real character. I remember seeing framed pictures of him all over the house but never met him unfortunately.

About 20 years ago I 'met' Daley Thompson. He came into a restaurant I was dining at. He had his entourage with him. My husband and I had to move tables and share with a couple we did not know, because Daley Thompson did not want ordinary folk sitting anywhere near him. I thought he was a bloody jerk then, seems I was right.

Thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

yeah, though par for the early-mid 80s
course it pretty much was.

fwiw Lewis was arguably, maybe even probably, the greatest Olympian ever, and still in his career earned less from endorsements than Dylan Mulvaney looks set to do, the clearest possible example of how far Madison has lurched leftwards, presumably in part to atone for past sins. Lewis was one of the best athletes ever and should have been endorsing everything. Mulvaney is a talentless fool who shouldn't be endorsing anything, ever.
