Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Now that some *men* are commenting, it's all changing over on Twitter...

So Andrew Neil is tweeting about a detransitioner today, Richard Dawkins wrote that piece in the NS that has been shared and commented widely, and Wes Streeting has (kind of) apologised to Rosie Duffield.

It seems like now some men are getting in on the act, people are paying attention 🙄 I'm not criticising them, but honestly, WHERE HAVE THEY BEEN ALL THIS TIME???

Suzanne Moore is, understandably, furious now that Labour has (supposedly) changed its tune, having been terfed out (see what I did there) of the Guardian by Kath Viner. Helen Lewis equally fed up. As are many more women.

It's lovely that men are finally taking notice. But so incredibly frustrating that women's voices just don't count.

(One person on X posited that the tide turned when Elon Musk took it over and allowed wrongthink to be published... that could be the case, too.)

It's been mostly women, feminists, lesbians, who have been fighting this, for years.

A few men, yes, particularly in the past couple of years, but the vast majority of the fightback has been women. This is a rather uncontroversial observation.

Still, if we're getting to the point where people are clamouring to claim they were on board all along, it's a good thing overall, I suppose.

I will not forget the very brave women who stood up to it all in the face of extraordinary risk.

Raising a glass to them tonight.

Musomama1 · 29/07/2023 22:19

It's going to take both female and male voices to take down the gender beast. I know a couple of men who will literally only hear male voices and kind of filter out female ones. I know it's shit but hey ho, that's the work in progress.

Very glad more prominent men are getting involved if they can amplify what so many women have been saying for years to ears that are attuned to male opinions.

The pushback has largely been from women.

The costs to reputation, health, career, have largely been to women.

I know many men took longer to see this - with a few honourable exceptions.

I can even understand why - many saw it as a 'woman's issue' and were wary of getting involved.

But it's unavoidable to note if you've been following it that the most vituperative attacks, threats and insults have been aimed at women.

Genderism is misogynist by nature and to its core.

Possibly. But there hasn't been a ton of public figures really saying anything at all, frankly. And if you don't limit yourself to men on the left, I think it's pretty even.

I suspect many men on the left think, women are on both sides of this, and I am not going to put my oar in and be told to pull it out by woman and trans people, I have no standing as a cis man.

I don't see there suddenly being more men, there are suddenly more of both sexes.

In real life, I meet more women TRAs than men, by a solid margin.

Apologies, I’ve now googled, and the Cass Review was commissioned in September 2020. So Matt Hancock would have been Health Secretary.

But by the time its Interim Report was published, in March 2022, it was Said Javid who was Health Secretary and decided the action to be taken in response.

Cheers. At least it means Hancock wasn't all bad lol. He's done children a service.

It does like feel as if there's been a big step forward here, but I still worry about the US. My perception from this side of the pond is that it's far more binary [ironically] than here. If you're a Democrat, you're expected to accept every single Democrat policy, and vice versa if you're a Republican. Pro trans policies seem to be identified as a Democrat thing, so a lot of Republican voters describe them as left-wing, when in fact they have sod all to do with conventional left/right politics. It's all so individualistic that I'd have thought it was the opposite of socialist.

Ahh really?? Man, you won't believe if if you don't see it with your own eyes. Everything is turned into male vs female feminism these days.
Plenty men were veryy vocal about it in the beginning.
Were you under a rock? Or maybe it's the women that zone out when the men speak, probably thought they were mansplaining when they spoke about it, huh?

The tide is turning now because it took some time for people to start listening , not because it was only females that spoke up initially and now males?

I could have posted this on any one of about 6 threads. I feel that a small crack has appeared in the space-time continuum and reality is starting to leak in.

No worries. And same here actually - Dworkin had posted about it whilst I was still in the middle of googling!

I think that Elon Musk taking over Twitter, getting rid of all the fake accounts, bots, TRA algorithms and AI scraping it for info has been a game changer.

Previously there were many tactics used to present a false impression of the number of people who are TRAs or TRA sympathetic, a false impression of the number of GC people - to give the impression of being niche, along with tactics to enclose people in a bubble, so most people would be oblivious to these issues even if they would be sympathetic , or if someone spoke out, tactics to make sure only a handful of people heard and no new audience could be reached.

With all that gone, people are now getting a truer picture of what people actually think.

TRA-ism was a big concoction of social media manipulation, false information, intimidation tactics, abuse of law and process, strategic litigation and so on. I think we are finally seeing clear unmuddied water for the first time in ages. It’s not just because blokes are finally weighing in.

Thank you for looking it up too. Sorry, I posted from the previous page and had not seen this from you before I did so.

Even more credit should go to health secretaries such as Matt Hancock who in the midst of the pandemic commissioned the review by Dr Hilary Cass that led to the closing of the Tavistock and also his successor, Sajid Javid, who provided support when I raised numerous concerns that the Department of Health refused to prioritise.

ScrollingLeaves · 29/07/2023 21:37

It was Matt Hancock who ordered the Cass Review:

Who ordered the Cass Review was it really Sajid Javid?

Yes, that’s correct.

Not Matt Hancock? I thought I read that, and remembered it because of being surprised.

I know what you mean, it's the same in meetings when I say something and it gets brushed off then my male colleague says the same thing 5 mins later and the boss congratulates him as if it's a brand new amazing idea.

Infuriating! So many women have been speaking up about this issue for so long but only now that men have started speaking that the issues have been acknowledged. Still, I suppose it's good that slowly more awareness of the insidiousness of all of this gender ideology is creeping into public consciousness.

I also think the Beth Rigby / Stonewall interview was another small step, but journalists like a good story/and she did a textbook interview, which was widely shared. I bet there’s a lot of journalists who’d like a piece of that.

Tootsweets23 · 29/07/2023 20:38

Has anyone ever put together a letter or petition addressed to Jimmy Mulville at Hattrick productions to say 'we want to see the Ted Musical and it will be a sell out smash hit'? I'd sign it!

LoobiJee · 29/07/2023 20:32

Their target is the people who are just now starting to think "um, hang on, what?" about the TRA-led agenda that Labour (and many others) sleep walked into because it looked progressive-y from the outside. Those people haven't been following in detail but are starting to hear things that worry them.
^^
Starmer wants to catch them with his "reasonable man" schtick now, and if he succeeds with that why will they bother finding out what GC women or the DM might know to the contrary even if they do have receipts?

That’s a fair point. Luckily you’ve given Arabella and Nettle a heads up.

In fact I think that is what's happening with Starmer and Streeting. They are positioning themselves to be able to say this (accepting sex matters) was what they were always saying, and it was the crazy screeching TERFs that caused all the hate.

I suppose they could try that…..if they believe women (or indeed CCHQ and the DM) lack the basic digital archiving skills needed to take screenshots etc.

yeah, and those of us who were on Streetings 'expell the Terfs' spreadsheet and list in the secret group. My data was actually leaked by LP at that point, but tbh they cared more about that than how they were treating women who raised the concerns

They aren't doing this to convince informed GC women or DM readers though. If they cared about either of those groups (1) they wouldn't have gone where they did in the first place.

(1) two groups who are, I hope it goes without saying, not the same - GC women have a wide range of political alligences although the F in TERF does mean we tend to skew left
